    3. Tan -bark was the bark striped off of hardwood trees in large sheets, they would take a ax and split the bark long ways up the trees and then around the trees , and pry it off in one piece,it then was gathered up and loaded onto a wagon and hauled to the tannery in Chattanooga. There it was soaked in large vats of water to produce a acidic liquid called tannin that was used to processes hides in to "tanned leather". Our ancestors let nothing go to waste, they used every thing until it wore out or was used up. I still have a set of cast iron cook ware that was give to me by my grandmother when I set up house keeping the first time, part of the set was given to her when she set up house keeping in 1916,by her grandmother.I also have a quilt that she made in 1917 out of scraps ,from a old sofa .Quilt making was one of the things you had to learn ,just like how to plant by the "signs",and when to kill hogs and cure the meat,or how to make whiskey. Just things you had to learn. 3. I don't think that our ancestors really cared where the state lines were, they were just lines on a map. They used the River like we do a interstate hi-way,and most of them had kin where ever they went on the river or adjacent to it. They were no different than we are ,they went to where the work was,or to where the supply's could be bought,or crops could be sold. One of my kin in the 1870 census list his occupation as "rafting logs on the river",his father would be called a "timber baron " now days. They would buy large tracts of land, for 1/2 to 2 cents a acre, then after the crops were in the ground in the spring ,they would cut tan-bark ,and sell it to the tannery in Chattanooga. The trees died with the bark striped and would dry all summer, then in the fall the crops would be laid-by,and they would then go and cut down the timber, and haul it to the river bank to make up log rafts. If the rafts were made up above Chattanooga they would float them to the lumber mills in Chattanooga,if made up below Chattanooga they were floated to Bridgeport to the mill there. The funny part is the land apparently had no value, after the timber was cut ,the land was generally sold again for back taxes in a year or two. iley ----- Original Message ----- From: "macbetty" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, September 20, 2005 10:55 PM Subject: Re: [TNMARION] WWI Soldiers > It does make you wonder if our ancestors really didn't know where > the state line was located for sure

    3. Illey: Ok, this is making a little more sense now. This Ann Thompson must not be mine then. The William on 1836 tax list and p. 278 of 1840 I'm 90% positive is mine (1840 for sure). I know that Ausburn, Moses and the others possibly have ties back to Franklin County as well. I'm betting that Charlotte is somehow related too since William has a daughter named Charlotte later on. I've talked to descendants of Burwell Thompson (Franklin Co) and they have documentation that seems to indicate my William was the son of Stephen Thompson. There's no real proof of all the sons of Stephen, just some notes passed down through the family. We know that our Thompsons started out in Franklin based on family records. There are ties to the Henleys, Gaines, and Roarks from Franklin Co. Did you know Monk Thompson (Carl Thompson?). He put together a lot of the information I have on William and his children. I'm intrigued by the murder you mentioned on the river. Do you have more details about this? The reason I ask is that Samuel F. Thompson and his siblings were also orphaned between 1840-1850. The family story is that their parents were murdered by persons unknown. The only clue I've been able to find was a reference to a dispute about the sale of a slave between William Thompson and Samuel B. Mead and Carter Marcum. It was in the court minutes from Dec. 1833. I just wish there more early records to help piece it all together. Thanks... Donna Iley Thompson <[email protected]> wrote: Donna What I have found out about them Thompson's,is they don't like to be found. But in the 1836 Marion tax list there is Hampton Thompson in district 6,in district 8 is William Thompson, and in district 10 there is Moses Thompson and Osmon Thompson. On the 1840 Census index on page 260 is Ann Thompson, page 261 Auburn Thompson, Page 278 Charlotte,Hampton,And William, page 280 Moses Thompson. The Ann Thompson on page may be the Ann on this 1841 deed,if so that means that the William on the deed is dead by census time 1840, she is not in the 1850 The Auburn Thompson on page 261 may be a son ,there is also a William in the 1850 that may be a son. The Charlotte,Hampton ,and William( he marries one of James Massengale girls) , on page 278 are mother and two brothers,Charlotte goes back to NC by 1850 and Hampton's daughter Charlotte Newsom is living in the house between Hampton and William,in 1850,Hampton and the Newsom's go to Sand Mountain (there was a killing on the river and they left),and Hampton and his wife die from the flue in 1851,the rest of the kids are raised by the Newsom's,William is there in the 1860 ,but moves over the mountain to Wauhatcie in Hamilton county ,before the war starts,he has a farm down by Browns Ferry on the 1862 Maps, this is my line. I don't have all the land maps for the Ocee district,so I can't tell you where that piece of land in the deed is.Maybe someone else on the list has them,or access. Also some one might have the 1840 and can see if these thompsons on page 260 and 261 are next to each other . Iley ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike & Donna OBrien" There were several other Thompsons in Marion Co. between 1830 and 1840, but only one William that I've found and it appears to be mine. ==== TNMARION Mailing List ==== *********************************************************************** PLEASE NOTE: This list is for queries and replies, comments, requests for help, and other genealogical related information that is of interest to researchers having a connection or a possible connection to Marion County, Tennessee. 3. Thank you Iley -- I had no idea about that. Now the cast iron skillet -- I have one that was handed down to me that originally belonged to my great Grandmother Susan Whittenberg Phillips that was born and raised in Greene County, Tn. I agree with you on the quilting and for that matter the soap making and candle making too. Now for the signs, we still use them when it comes to working the cattle. You can laugh if you like, but the signs do work. 3. Not for certain Illey, but it is interesting. The deed is from 1841 and mentions William Thompson deceased. There is sketchy information at best on my William Thompson, but we know he was dead by 1850. It's possible that he owned a handful of slaves; I've seen other documents referencing the sale or purchase of slaves by him in Marion Co. Samuel F. Thompson's mother was supposed to be named Carrie, but even that is not a concrete fact. I'll keep this deed and try to do a little more research on it. There were several other Thompsons in Marion Co. between 1830 and 1840, but only one William that I've found and it appears to be mine. Does anybody have any idea from the description where this parcel might have been? Could it have been near Ladds Cove? I'll let you know if I find out anything on it. Thanks for sharing that Illey. 3. I sure hope you are wrong on that Bill :-) I do hope the people will still stand up for their rights even if it is county to county repealing it. I think we all have enough taxes now. :-) What is that saying death and taxes are inevitable? LOL Actually though Dee I am surprised this has not already happened -- except for the revenue that is generated by being able to step across the state line for such goods as liquor , etc. in Al. that are not available in that area of Tn. 3. Just have to throw this info in since I live in Jackson County, Alabama now. As far as modern day goes. Bridgeport, Alabama has been talking for years about becoming part of the state of Tennessee as they feel they are closer to them than they are Alabama. They have been talking about that for the 13 1/2 years that I have lived here. They are not happy with Alabama. Dee

    2. Hi All: Since I was born in Richard City, which all of you know was closer to the Ala. State Line, my Relatives used Ala. My Grandparents were married in Jackson County, and also are buried in Alabama. Convenience of how close Bridgeport, AL. was, as opposed to travelling to Jasper, TN. is very obvious. We have to also remember that transportation was very limited years ago. If you had to hire someone to transport you to any event, it would have been more economical to use the nearest place. Ruth

    3. that is very true Ruth and apparently those living in the South Pittsburg area did do the majority of their business in Al or Ga. I also know a lot of ours went back and forth to Franklin County too--- However I am not sure they moved as much as they kept switching the county line from Marion to Franklin Betty . ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, September 21, 2005 5:56 AM Subject: Re: [TNMARION] WWI Soldiers | Hi All: | | Since I was born in Richard City, which all of you know was closer to the | Ala. 3. It does make you wonder if our ancestors really didn't know where the state line was located for sure -- as so many major events in their life's happened in Al and Ga instead of Tn. I guess it was just as easy for them to get to those courthouses as it was to Jasper. Perhaps it was because they were working in those areas too??????? 3. I think you're onto something there about the employment Betty. I was looking at this draft reg. card and I know that in 1910 and 1920 they were living in Battle Creek, Marion Co. However, it says Grandpa Thompson was employed by J. W. Jones Sawmill in Bridgeport, Ala. He lists his home address and place of birth as Dove, TN.
