Well, what and where do you go then for info? -----Original Message----- From: Mike & Donna OBrien [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, September 23, 2005 2:56 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [TNMARION] MARION COUNTY, TENNESSEE MORTALITY SCHEDULE 1850-1880 Yes, that's how I understand it too. It's not a complete listing. What I was told by someone at TSLA was that whether a person shows up there or not depends a lot on where they died and whether their family reported the death to the census taker. I'm answering my own question - from genealogy.about.com: Definition: When the U.S. census was taken for the years 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1885, 1890 and 1900, the enumerators were asked to collect information on all persons who had died during the 12 months preceding the census. This information is included on a mortality schedule. Census day was declared to be June 1st of the census year, therefore the enumerator (census taker) was to ask questions about people who had died between June 1st of the previous year and May 31st of the current year. Information on these special schedules includes the name of the deceased, age, sex, color, birthplace, month of death, occupation, disease or cause of death and number of days ill. The 1880 mortality schedule also included questions about the place where the disease was contracted and the number of years the deceased had lived in the area. The 1890 and 1900 mortality schedules have, unfortunately, been destroyed. Mike & Donna OBrien wrote: > I have a similar thing with my Thompson line. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong but I understand that the mortality schedule only represents those deaths occuring within one year of the census date. So at most it could only reflect 10% of the deaths. Mike & Donna OBrien wrote: > I have a similar thing with my Thompson line. There's limited information in Marion County for that far back. I've not had much luck with mine either, but I figured this tool might be helpful to someone. Maybe Euline could give us some tips on sources for deaths in Marion before the official records started. Carole: I'm not sure how complete that list is. If people died at home, they may not be on there. I'm guessing anyone attended by a doctor or anyone that died in Chattanooga will be there. This weekend I noticed the Old Tate Cemetery on Battle Creek is clean. If anyone wants to see it, now is a good time.

Betty The "signs" as they are called have been used by farmers for thousands of years to plant by,the almanac that we use is just a written version of what has been handed down generation to generation. I read up on the subject one time, and it goes back into pre-history,there are all kind's of effigies that have been built, just to mark the passing of the season's so that every one would know the best time to plant crops in a particular area of the world. ----- Original Message ----- From: "macbetty" <[email protected]> > Now for the signs, we still use them when it comes to working the > cattle. You can laugh if you like, but the signs do work.
Donna What I have found out about them Thompson's,is they don't like to be found. But in the 1836 Marion tax list there is Hampton Thompson in district 6,in district 8 is William Thompson, and in district 10 there is Moses Thompson and Osmon Thompson. On the 1840 Census index on page 260 is Ann Thompson, page 261 Auburn Thompson, Page 278 Charlotte,Hampton,And William, page 280 Moses Thompson. The Ann Thompson on page may be the Ann on this 1841 deed,if so that means that the William on the deed is dead by census time 1840, she is not in the 1850 The Auburn Thompson on page 261 may be a son ,there is also a William in the 1850 that may be a son. The Charlotte,Hampton ,and William( he marries one of James Massengale girls) , on page 278 are mother and two brothers,Charlotte goes back to NC by 1850 and Hampton's daughter Charlotte Newsom is living in the house between Hampton and William,in 1850,Hampton and the Newsom's go to Sand Mountain (there was a killing on the river and they left),and Hampton and his wife die from the flue in 1851,the rest of the kids are raised by the Newsom's,William is there in the 1860 ,but moves over the mountain to Wauhatcie in Hamilton county ,before the war starts,he has a farm down by Browns Ferry on the 1862 Maps, this is my line. I don't have all the land maps for the Ocee district,so I can't tell you where that piece of land in the deed is.Maybe someone else on the list has them,or access. Also some one might have the 1840 and can see if these thompsons on page 260 and 261 are next to each other . Iley ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike & Donna OBrien" <[email protected]> There were several other Thompsons in Marion Co. between 1830 and 1840, but only one William that I've found and it appears to be mine.
Steff There are some Morgan's,and some Griffen over in Hamilton county, a lot of the people in Marion early on ended up in Hamilton county in later years. Iley that is interesting but then so many things are controlled by the moon -- You can listen to a police scanner and tell what phase the moon is --- some people are effected by it more so than others -- the same way animals and children are effected by storm fronts moving through -- I guess when you teach school for so many years you learn to read all of these signs by actions and noise levels as well . LOl I would presume that is not genealogy though , but it just might explain a few reasons for why our ancestors did things the way they did , now wouldn't it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Iley Thompson" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, September 21, 2005 2:23 PM Subject: Re: [TNMARION] WWI Soldiers | Betty | The "signs" as they are called have been used by farmers for thousands of | years to plant by,the almanac that we use is just a written version of what | has been handed down generation to generation. | I read up on the subject one time, and it goes back into pre-history,there | are all kind's of effigies that have been built, just to mark the passing of | the season's so that every one would know the best time to plant crops in a | particular area of the world. | ----- Original Message ----- | From: "macbetty" <[email protected]> | > Now for the signs, we still use them when it comes to working | the | > cattle.
