There is an alternate family tree website. Some of the info is the same as you find at rootsweb, ancestry, etc. but I have ocassionally found trees that don't exist anywhere else. It is a FREE site. Info is freely contributed and freely distributed. It's www.gencircles.com. Bill Mc
ginny, I may be incorrect because I haven't tested it lately. Isn't the family tree info at ancestry free? I understood that it was. I know that it's exactly the same information that you can get from rootsweb.com which is definitely free. Family tree info is the only thing I know of that ancestry.com gets for free. They also have what they call the world tree at ancestry.com. It isn't free but it's pretty much useless from my experience with it. I have not seen the survey either but I do pay for Ancestry.com as I am unable to travel to places all over and their Census has helped me locate most of my family. Yes even the census is not always correct but neither are death certificates that I have received because wrong information was given on them at the time of the person's death. My own grandma's death certificate lists her sister as her mom and that sister was only five years older than my mom but evidently my great-aunt filled in the wrong spot when she filled it out and probably never realized what she had done in her grief. I have been lucky enough to find people that are willing to travel all over areas for you to get photos of cemeteries and that has been great for me. I for one appreciate those angels. One woman drove 35 miles to the cemetery where my mom's mother and all her family was buried in Arizona. Took pictures and would not take a cent for anything. Because of her I found out my grandma and great-grandpa did not have stones. So I paid for them to have stones even though I know I will probably never get to that cemetery. When I find information I carefully try to document what I can myself but in the long run if it hadn't been for people putting the information on the sites I may never have found anything. You just have to be very careful and also be grateful for the angels out there that are willing to help others. I have not put anything on sites because to tell you the truth I am not really sure how to do it but I am willing to try and help anyone that may have seen me asking for information and has contacted me because we are searching the same line. I haven't seen the survey and I agree with some of your comments and respectfully disagee on others. I know that Betty and I also disagree on this. When you pay for genealogy material, it's not the material you're really paying for. It's the effort to accumulate the info and present it in such a way that it can be easily searched for. The alternative for many of us would be to travel to many different libraries and courthouses all over the US. Some of the material on ancestry.com came from books and databases of others that they have to pay to put on their website. Yes the census info is public record if you want to travel all over the place and use the ornery microfilm machines. And the family tree info is free because of just what you said - it was provided by others for free. The family tree info at ancestry is exactly the same as the family tree info at rootsweb - they are mirror sites and paid for by ancestry.com. But as you noted, anything free may not be reliable. I don't understand why some feel so passionate about this. Have you ever bought a bottle of water? How much of the price is for the water? What about load of firewood -do you think the seller had to buy a bunch of tires. You're paying for his labor. Ever bought a box of cereal - the cost of the grain (what the farmer gets) is miniscule compared to what you pay for the box. You make some very valid points, Bill. The census alone costs quite a bit to buy complete and Ancestry has hired people to do nothing but transcribe this so we have searchable indexes. I, for one, willl pay for that because it has been a great verifiable source of information in the past. In some ways, you can look at it like a software license. Yes it's information, but it's useless without the means to access it (i.e. CD, executable file, etc.). Just remember that anything you get from TN Archives or your State Dept. of Health comes with a hefty fee for each copy, so even that information isn't free. I agree that some things should never be charged for and as long as we're all willing to share what we can through sources like the Marion Co. website, so much the better. You never know what little tidbit just might break down the brick wall for someone else! Merry Christmas to everyone and good luck with your research... Bill, yeah, some firewood does smell like old tires! I meant that I resent paying for what was given freely. I don't resent paying for other stuff that has been made available like censuses, etc. Yes, I realize that it costs to have a website, and databases, etc. but it is the way in which they present it. I know that none of you will understand what I am trying to say, but it all comes down to false advertising but no one ever calls them on it. You're told it's available to search but when you go there, you have to join, which costs money that some cannot afford. That in itself can make a newbie searcher with no funds get discouraged about searching further. ginny
I have not seen the survey I was just notified this morning of it's existence -- if it ask that kind of question , I will urge others to answer the same way you did . I have a rule of thumb -- If it is in my direct line then I prove it at least three ways-- if this is not possible then I put it down as hearsay or some one else's research--- My Father, bless his heart, taught me to do that , as he told our family history in such a colorful way that he convinced all of my sisters of the misinformation-- while his brother convinced his Granddaughter he was Indian-- My maiden name is Flanagan and the only other ancestry besides Irish, is German in me. -- I still can't convince my Sisters that Daddy lied to them to keep from us the fact his Grandmother forgot to get married. Even though I have proof of it. So I just laugh at the silliness I find on the internet about my family as some people get rather irate when I have tried to correct them on my direct line. Some of the things I have found on the paid services is pretty accurate though for the most part -- such as the census , social security records etc. so forth. thank you for letting me know about the questions Betty ----- Original Message ----- From: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, December 14, 2005 11:30 AM Subject: Re: [TNMARION] survey | Betty, I got one of these surveys yesterday and filled it out. | | The problem is, some questions are unanswerable because of the way they were | stated. Betty, I got one of these surveys yesterday and filled it out. The problem is, some questions are unanswerable because of the way they were stated. Too bad.
