    3. Trying to verify that your ancestor is a certain degree of native American is difficult.  Many native American's didn't trust the government, when they were trying to have them register as a native American.  After what Andrew Jackson didn't to the tribes in the south east and force them out of their native lands, many didn't come forward to register for the Dawes Register.  If you look at their names, the surely don't have native American names, also.  If they had a native American name, they were afraid that the U. S. government would arrest them, turn them into slaves, etc.  They just didn't trust our government.  Hearsay isn't always the best source either.  You can discuss genealogy with thousands of families, friends, etc. and everyone has a ancestor(s) who are full blooded Indian.  Cherokee it the most popular name, but Creek are probably the most abundant tribe, as I found out after searching for many years.  First, to really verify, check the names (and many different spellings of the names) against the Dawes Registry (Register).  If their name is there, the U. S. government recognizes your ancestor as a native American, and possibly eligible for money???  It's exciting, and disappointing, but you will enjoy the experience, guaranteed!!!Happy Hunting, Bill L. 3. Hello Ida.  I'm not from that area and didn't have any kinfolk there, except my Great Greatgrandfather is suppose to be buried near Whiteside.  This information was passed down to my family by the War Dept.  He and my GGrandmother were separated at the time of his death.  She was living in Lauderdale County, AL approximately around 1880/90.  His name is John William Ledgewood.  There are not too many Ledgewood's on this old earth, so if you know, or hear of one, they is a 99% chance we are related.  Since there are so few of us, sometimes people assume it should be Ledgerwood, instead of Ledgewood.  I would appreciate dropping me a line if you do come across a Ledgewood, or a questionable Ledgerwood.  Thanks and good luck with your search.  Bill Ledgewood On ‎Thursday‎, ‎November‎ ‎15‎, ‎2018‎ ‎01‎:‎40‎:‎40‎ ‎PM‎ ‎PST, Amy Knight <4736403@gmail.com> wrote: Ida, My name is Amy Knight. According to family lore, she married a Braden who was my ggrandmother Minnie's father. Legend has that he died in a coal mine. Alice later married Jim Barton, but I don't know when. As far as I know, she only had two more children -- Myrtle (b abt 1893) and Nellie (b. abt. 1904). Unfortunately, I am not in contact with any of Nell's family, but I have reached out to 2 of Myrtle's descendents. One of them also heard the story.  She did say that her grandfather, Charles Jones, almost never spoke of the family. Another, Glenda Crafton -- Myrtle's granddaughter, said that she didn't know much about the family. Both of these people are DNA matches on ancestry.com. However, according to the DNA, I don't think that Myrtle and Minnie had the same father. My grandmother, Ruby Rowland Self, talked about her family and wanted to know more, but she truly didn't have a lot of information. I have looked and looked for answers. Not only would I really like to know who Minnie's father, my gggrandfather is, but also I want to know what happened in the family, either in Marion County or in Bridgeport that was so bad that people didn't want to talk about. 3. Carole, I want to thank you for your response. I realize it was a long time ago. I don’t know if there is anyone who can help. I have found a cousin, a great granddaughter of Myrtle (Minnie’s sister) who is also searching for information. She heard the same story that I did even though we have never met. It is all very mysterious and I want to find out what I can. I have reason to believe that things happened that caused strife within the family. My cousin said that her grandfather, Charles Jones, would not speak of the family. Also, my grandmother Ruby’s sister, Mae, wrote a letter (which I’ve recently discovered) that spoke of trouble in Bridgeport. I just don’t know and can’t feel settled until I do. 1. ([TNMARION])Watley
    2. Looking for information about my gggrandmother, Alice Watley (b 1867, Marion Co.). Her daughter, Minnie, was born in 1887. I have always been told that Minnie's father was a Braden that died in a coal mine. Also, on Minnie's marriage certificate to my ggrandfather, Will Rowland, she states her name is Minnie Breeden, even though she usually went by the name Minnie Barton (Alice later married James Barton and moved to Jackson Co., AL). Further evidence is that her son, Horace's social security application lists his mother's name as "Minnie Braden." My grandmother, Ruby, first told me about Minnie's father. She did not know more than his last name. I hope there is someone who will help me find the identity of my gggrandfather. Sincerely, Amy Knight

    3. William, I don't know if Euline is still active in helping with Genealogy or not. I had the pleasure of meeting her and having lunch with her on one of y trips to TN. Actually it turns out that she and I are cousins on our BURNETT line. I have her Marion County Cemetery book however, so I looked in it to see if I could find a Ledgerwood listed and there were none listed. I think that I may have told you that in my RICHIE family I believe that Joseph RICHIE Born 17 Dec 1809 married a Nancy LEDGERWOOD 25 May 1832 in Knox Co. My ancestor was Robert RICHIE who sold his land in Jefferson Co TN and moved to Marion Co in 1848 his youngest brother was Joseph who would be about the right age to be the one who married Nancy. they had a daughter named Rachel who was the 2nd wife of John Walker HICKS. I have often wondered if Leatherwood and Ledgerwood are different spellings or different names. By the way Euline worked at the WHITWELL Library not WHITESIDE. There is a Whiteside in Marion Co I think. I have not proved that it was my Joseph RICHIE who Married Nancy LEDGERWOOD. Sorry that I caan't be of more help. 3. Still trying to find out where ( what state, County & city) Will Joe BUNCH was when he died of T B....His family of a girl, Maude Lee Bunch b. May 1892, a boy, Tate Brady Bunch b. Sep.,1895 & his wife, Ida R Etta Paris Bunch b. Feb/Mar 1872 in Tenn, were found on the 1900 Gross, Jackson, Alabama census as a widowed mother of 4 & 2 children living, a dress maker, age 27. The children were age 8 & 4..I found on Tate Brady Bunch "Delayed Birth Certificate" showing he was born in Marion County Tennessee. In August of 1900 Ida married my paternal grandpa Cicero Dawson Millican in Jackson County Alabama. They had several children of which my uncle Fred & my dad, Grady Millican survived to adults.

We do not have a exact date, or cause. He and my ggrand mother, Martha Jane Jones Ledgewood were separated at the time. The only item we have to indicate where he was buried was an document from the War Department that he was buried in a cemetery, near Whiteside, Marion Cty, TN. I've been to many cemeteries in that area, with a person that knows many of the cemeteries, but have found nothing. Martha Jane (Jones) Ledgewoodb. 6 Apr 1833, Tazwell, Claiborne County, TNd. Jan 1909, Lauderdale County, ALMartha is buried at the Mt. Olive Cemetery, near Waterloo, in Lauderdale County, AL next to her sister Mary and Mary's husband Frank Taylor.Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Wm. C.
