    1. [TNMADISO] Big Springs Cemetery
    2. David Donahue
    3. The last two days I have recorded the white burials at the mixed-race antebellum Big Springs Cemetery in southeastern Madison County. Is anyone on this list familiar with the cemetery? I was wondering when the fieldstones were removed? 1900-1910 when several large family plots were laid out in the core of the white cemetery, or in the 1940s when an annual cleanup was replaced by periodic mowing? In particular I am having a hard time estimating the degree to which space has been reused. I think extensively in the white section, but not at all in the black section. The white cemetery grew eastward along the crest line of the low hill it lies on, and the cemetery was large in area by the end of the nineteenth century. Yet at one place there are two rows of markers for burials in the 1970s or later at the crest of the ridge between two rows of markers with death dates in the 1880s and 1890. As I can see unmarked graves in these two rows wherever there are no post-1970 markers, I double that any of this space was free in 1970. David ddonahue@netease.net

    2. Hey just wondering if anyone else was researching the Leat, Harrison, Foster or Doak families. Most of them were in Wilson County, but I know some of them migrated to Madison, thanks and God Bless! Elizabeth Murphy

    1. Re: [TNMADISO] Archible King
    2. Suzie, There is a good possability this is him. I had not been able to find him. My records do say Archible King m. to Mary R. Luckey 8 Apr 1851. I do not have a birthdate for her, but it would have to be after 1830 and before 1841. John and Rebecca were married 24 Jan 1828, and I have son John b. 8 Jul 1829. On the 1830 Smith Co. census there is only 1 son - no daughters < 5, and this would fit as John Finis. I only have the marriage for this couple, and this from the Dekalb Co page: The Liberty herald, July 16, 1890-Dekalb Co., TN. Mrs. Wm. King and children of st. Louis came yesterday on a visit to Mrs. Mary King of this place. The Liberty Herald- Nov. 15, 1893- Mrs. Mary King has left for St. Louis where she will make her home. This would fit with what the other person noted about some of the Kings moving to MO. It would seem from reading this that maybe she is a widow also. SO: Does anyone know who his parents were, and who his and Mary R Luckey's children were, as they would have many cousins in Madison Co??? Thanks so much for everyones input! I have been stuck on this branch my Luckey's for a while! Teri

    1. Re: [TNMADISO] Madison County "Kings"
    2. To add to the discussion on the "King" surname.. Several members of the Walter King family of Kingston (Roane County) Tennessee passed through Jackson in the early years. They were brothers of Martha D. King, first wife of then-Col. (later Major-General) William Arnold. William Arnold was a soldier, lawyer, and one of the first Commissioners for the city of Jackson. Walter King (abt 1764 to 1830) was a socially prominent and wealthy citizen of Kingston in Roane County; in 1795, he had married Nancy "Patsy" Sevier (1779 to abt 1830), the daughter of General and Governor John Sevier of Tennessee, and Sevier's first wife, Sarah Hawkins. William Arnold married Martha D. King, August 17, 1819, R. Richards, M.G. (see also: E.M. Wells, "History of Roane Co., TN", p. 92: Aug-17-1819. William Arnold and Martha D. King, bondmen William Arnold and Rufus F. King). A contemporary Jackson, TN, newspaper item recorded Martha's death, about September 2, 1824: Jackson Gazette, No. 15, Vol. 1, Saturday, Sept. 4, 1824 "Died, on Thursday last, Mrs. MARTHA D. ARNOLD, consort of Col. WM. ARNOLD of this place and daughter of Mr. WALTER KING, of East Tennessee." Many of William Arnold's kinsmen also located in Madison County. From Roane County, Tennessee, Rufus F. King, bondsman for the marriage of William to Martha King, was an early settler there, and would later move to Gibson County: "Knoxville Register," 1825, Vol. 10, #471, 19 August: "Married on Tuesday eve the 2nd inst., in Madison County, Western District, Rufus King, Esq., of Jackson, formerly of Roane Co.,to Miss Nancy Gibson, daughter of the late Col. John H. Gibson of the former county." Also, brother-in-law Austin Augustus King practiced law for a while in Jackson, before moving to Missouri, where he would be elected Governor.

    3. Teri, Could he have been born around 1811? If so, maybe I have him in the 1860 census for Smith County. I have A.H . King married to Mary (possibly Mary D.) with the children Sam H. , Robert, A.H., and Joseph. That is in Dixons Springs. Let me know if this works. 3. Susan: The Riverside Cemetery listings are on the Madison County genealogy webpage. Here is the link if you don't already have it. http://www.tngenweb.org/madison/ There are many other cemeteries listed on the page, so you may find more Kings in other cemeteries. The search engine is very good when searching for surnames. 1. [TNMADISO] SCOTT, HALTOM, DEBERRY, LOVELACE, HUDSON
    2. I have reached a brick wall in trying to identify the father of my greatgreatgrandfather George R. SCOTT (1817-1887). I know from the 1880 census that his father was born in Virginia. I am hoping that I can find descendants of John T. SCOTT (1847-1918), son of George R. SCOTT and Hester Ann HALTOM as well as descendants of Alfred Edgar SCOTT (b. abt. 1867) son of George R. SCOTT and Eugenia J. HUDSON, nee LOVELACE, who was widow of Frank Emory HUDSON. (I have researched other descendants to no avail. My cousin, Joanne Rooks Black and I who are both greatgreatgrandaughters of George R. Scott and Hester Ann Haltom have been collaborating on this genealogy . We are both descended from their son Calvin Batson Scott.) John T. SCOTT, as well as his father and step-mother ( George R. and Eugenia), is buried in Ebenezer cemetery in Malesus. George R. Scott was a farmer in Malesus and I am told that his house is still standing. I have information regarding grantor deeds and grantee deeds of George R. Scott, as well as the record of a land dispute settlement which was signed in 1895 by his heirs (including John T. Scott). Also marriage records of George R. Scott. All of these are Madison Co. records. George R. Scott's first wife, Mary Ann HALTOM was the daughter of Thomas HALTOM and Mary Ann DEBERRY. His second wife, Eugenia J. Lovelace Hudson was the daughter of James Lovelace and Martha Browder. John T. Scott (1847-1918) married Nannie K. (1867-1924) in 1891. They had a son named Floyd b. 1893. I have included all this information in the hope that someone can help me (a) regarding the identity of the father of George R. SCOTT or (b) regarding the descendants of his son, John T. SCOTT. I will be grateful for any information. Genevieve Scott Bell
