    1. [TNMADISO] James Henry Carothers
    2. Ozark Backwoods
    3. I am looking for help and information about my 2nd Great Grandfather James Henry Carothers. He was born in Huntsville, Alabama in 1832 and was said to have lived in Tennessee from 1850 to 1873. He was married to Mary Susan Neal in Arkansas sometime after that, and his children were Lemuel Carothers, Joseph Roberta Carothers and Lucille Carothers-Jameson. Elderly family members have told me that he owned property in Nashville or that his family did possibly before Nashville became a city. I would like to find land records. He was said to also have lived in Western Tennessee across the river from Caruthersville, Missouri on a plantation. He was a schoolteacher and a carpenter and may have been educated at a University in Tennessee. I would like to verify this information with school records, land records, newspaper articles, etc. Also marriage records as I suspect he was married in Tennessee before marrying Mary Susan Neal in Arkansas. Any help or information about James Henry Carothers would be greatly appreciated. _________________________________________________________________ Plan your next US getaway to one of the super destinations here. http://special.msn.com/local/hotdestinations.armx

    3. I totally agree with Nancy, but there is one more person we need to give thanks to and that is the person responsible for taking the time to scan Mr. Smith's work and to get the files ready for David. Many thanks to Laurel Baty in Maryland who has spent countless hours and her own resources to make so much information available for everyone. Thanks Laurel! > [Original Message] > From: <NNoe1313@aol.com> > To: <TNMADISO-L@rootsweb.com> > Date: 2/14/2004 3:24:04 AM > Subject: Re: [TNMADISO] Search Madison County Cemeteries > > David; > Just a note with a BIG thank you from a researcher far from TN who > appreciates all the work you put into this project. 1. [TNMADISO] Search Madison County Cemeteries
    2. David Donahue
    3. http://www.tngenweb.org/madison/cemetery/cemsearch.htm I have realized for a long time that the search engine on Madison County TNGenWeb was worthless, partially because of the massive number of Nashville Christian Advocate files. The new Search Madison County Cemeteries page has search engines to help you find people in the riverside, blackcem, and cemetery subdirectories. It does not include Madison County cemeteries from other web sites, not the few cemeteries in the smith sundirectory. In the next month or so I will nove the NCA files to their own subdirectory and will add more search engines for specific subdirectories. David

    1. [TNMADISO] Abel Willis and Jane Fleming
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JgB.2ACE/1045 Message Board Post: I need to confirm this line with correct data and documentation. I have the following: Francis Willis (1666-??) married M. Simmons and had the following children: Francis Willis (1690-1749) married Ann Rich (1695-6/10/1727) and they lived in Gloucester County Virginia. Her father was Edward Rich mother unknown and her grandfather was Elias Rich. They had John Willis (1719-1766) married Mildred Smith (??-1769), Francis Willis (1717-??) married Elizabeth Porter, and Mary Willis (1719-??) married Lewis Burwell. John Willis and Mildred Smith moved to Brunswick County Virginia. The will of Mildred lists the following children: Sarah Willis, Elizabeth Willis, John Willis, Augustine Willis, Francis Willis, Richard Willis, and Lewis Willis. They were of “Beddingfieldhall” in Brunswick County Virginia. I need proof that the John Willis listed is the same John Willis (1743-1816) who married 1.) Unknown and 2.) Mary Jane Lewis. He also served in the Revolutionary War in! the following capacity: 1 St Lieut. 2 Virginia on September 29, 1775, Captain on June 15, 1776, taken prisoner at the Battle of Brandywine September 11, 1777, exchanged on November 8, 1780, promoted to Major in the 5 Th Virginia but did not join the Company. He was awarded 7,254 acres possibly in Surry County North Carolina. He died in 1816 in Surry County North Carolina. I have his children as Abel Willis (10/12/177-10/2/1873). He moved to Overton County Tennessee where he served in the War of 1812 and then to Madison County Tennessee where he died. He married Sarah “Sally” Fleming on 3/9/1798 in Surry County North Carolina. They had the following children: Nancy Willis (1798-) married William Hord, Jane Willis (1801-) married James B. Wood, Martha Willis (1805-) married Battle Robertson (12/18/1801-5/24/1848), Edward Willis married Mary Permila Strake, Fleming Willis died young, William Willis died young, Sarah Willis (3/12/1818-3/27/1889) married John C! opender and then Hugh Armstrong Blevins and Elizabeth Willis married F . N. Burton and then Benjamin Davidson (1822-3/1881). The other children to John Willis and Mildred Smith are: Frances Willis (1/25/1744/45-4/3/1829) married Elizabeth Edwards, Augustine Willis (1747-??) married Mary Hayes Plummer, Rich Willis (1751-??), Sarah Willis (1753-??) married Hugh Hayes (1740-1814), Lewis Willis (1755-), and Elizabeth Willis (1757-??) married Thomas Cocke. The other children of John Willis and wife unknown (besides Abel) were John Willis and Lewis Wills whereabouts and information currently unknown. I have most of the grandchildren of Abel Willis researched with several going to Arkansas, Mississippi and other counties in Tennessee. The marriages of his children were in Madison County Tennessee. I need proof that John Willis from Brunswick County Virginia who served in the Revolutionary War is the son of John Willis and Mildred Smith as indicated in the will. I have found no records in Surry County North Carolina but I have found the Fleming line and have that tied into the Willis line. I have no will of John Willis or any land grants in that area. Any help, guidance or assistance would be appreciated. My email is jwstreak@yahoo.com. Thanks John Thomas

    3. http://www.tngenweb.org/madison/blackcem/04-marsh.htm I have updated Marshall Cemetery near Medon. This is the 47th active black cemetery I have updated since August 2003. I still need to do a few more small black cemeteries which may be active. Between now and the end of April I will update the white section of the antebellum Providence Cemetery (a 10-year update) and Liberty Grove Cemetery ( a 15-year update). I am willing to update one or two other cemeteries from the north or south cemetery books and will take consider recommendations. Speaking of Liberty Grove, are the white Liberty Grove Cemetery and the black Old Liberty Grove Cemetery related in any way? At one time I had thought of recording the markers at Ridgecrest Cemetery. However, it would be about 450 hours of work and I just do not want to do it by myself, particularly as there would be over two hours of driving every day I was in the cemetery. (Note that more time is spent at the computer typing that in the cemetery itself.) If anyone really wants this cemetery online and could get a few volunteers to work in late March and April, I will work too. David

    1. [TNMADISO] Doak
    2. Hey, I'm researching the Doaks and was wondering if anyone knew about the story that William Hugh Doak was the first constable of Madison. I've read it in several places, but no one seems to have the evidence to back it up. Any ideas on how I can check into this? William did leave his native Wilson County about the time of Madisons formation, but after that I cant find him. Thanks and God Blesd! Elizabeth Murphy

    1. [TNMADISO] Re: John C. Kendrick of Kendrick & Baxter
    2. Linda; No, but I think I know who did submit those photos. John Kendrick of Kendrick & Baxter was my GG Uncle. His brother, Joseph Malcolm Kendrick was my great grandfather. John Clayton and Joseph Malcolm's father was James A. Kendrick. Jane Henderson whom I mentioned in the previous email, was the mother of James A. Kendrick, and the grandmother of John Clayton Kendrick who was in business with Tracy Baxter. As far as I know, John Kendrick never married. He died in Cairo Ill. according to his obit. He was only 32. Thanks for writing and letting me know of your connection to Baxter. I'd like to know more. Who were the parents of Tracy Baxter and your grandmother? Who was your grandmother? I do wonder how various people hook up in business together. Nancy

But I dont remember a lot. Going through some papers, I did remember that he once told me he was named after a friend of his fathers who told him that he would educate any son of his who was named after him. This didnt happen, but could possibly be because of the conditions in Tenn. at the time Absolom was ready to be educated. Civil War and Reconstruction messed up a lot of plans. II will email you more when I have a chance, but I do have President Preslye(sic) to Allen DeBery(sic) - WD Book 28. 11-5-1870, T-97 acres Forked D. River. Filed 3-28-71 AndPresident Presley to Allen DeBerry WD Book31. 8-27-72. I find Allen DeBerry as a Private in the 55 Browns Tenn. Infantry in the Civil War. This was an outfit made up of mostly Madison Co men.The real estate tranactions are from the County records of Madison Co. Tenn. However, if President had that much real estate, I dont know why he needed someone to finance the education of a son. Also have will of Elizabeth DeBerry of Madison Co. She has son named Absolom DeBerry and also one named Allen DeBerry. Dated July 6, 1846. I find those land transaction in District 7, but know nothing more about that. There were lots of DeBerrys and Presleys in Anson Co, NC, also...but I dont have anything of real value there. Worth looking into more, The DeBerry name is interesting to me also. I had an uncle with the middle name of DeBerry and he has a living daughter with the middle name of DeBerry. More later. Margaret

    1. [TNMADISO] Big Springs Cemetery
    2. David Donahue
    3. http://www.tngenweb.org/madison/cemetery/bigsp.htm http://www.tngenweb.org/madison/blackcem/03-bigsp.htm By watching the Memphis radar I was able to get to Big Springs Cemetery yesterday afternoon and finish the updating the white section during a two-hour gap in the showers. I would appreciate it if someone who knows this cemetery would review the files for the white and black sections. I used an arbitrary, imaginary line to separate the two sections. My separation does not necessarily match that of others. For example, in 1989 Patsy McNatt, Wilma R. Robbins, Vera Spencer, Gracie Mills, Bobbi King, Renee Anderson, and Margie Dunavant included the Collier and other markers along the eastern fence and in the middle of the south slope in their listing of the cemetery, which omitted black burials in the southwest corner where black burials were then active. When Jonathan Smith recorded the black section in 1989 he also omitted the Collier and other markers along the eastern fence and in the middle of the south slope, but included the Andrews and Hemby markers, which I think are white burials. I would appreciate any help on this issue. Also, I would like to know when fieldstones were removed from the cemetery. I feel that a lot of space in the white section (but not the black section) has been reused. The south slope used for black burials seems to be full of unmarked burials, from the western access drive to the eastern fence. Interestingly, the most recent black burial is Elzie Green. Based on location, I would have listed her as white had she not been buried by Mercer Brothers Funeral Home. She was buried in a small unused area north of the imaginary line I used to separate the sections. South of her are a number of unmarked burials. To the north it is several feet to the nearest unidentified white burial and several more feet to the nearest identified white burial. David
