    3. http://www.uttyl.edu/vbetts/christmas.htm Christmas Articles from Civil War Newspapers I think it was on this list late last year that someone has asked what Christmas would have been like about 1850. The item above is interesting reading and not far off in time. As I expected, there is not a mention of a Christmas tree anywhere. That was a late nineteenth century addition to Christmas in the United States. A drwaing in one paper showed Santa wearing "striped knee britches with three buttons, striped stockings." The red-suited Santa we all love was the creation of mass market Coca Cola advertisements. One thing which did strike me is that in 1860 the commercialization of Christmas was already well underway. 2. I have Polly May ( Probably Polly was a MARY) married to WADE USSERY. I have not dates for these folks, as the info was found on various pages of un-sourced genealogical info of my grandmother's. I also have a DEMPSEY USSERY married to EMILY JOHNSON, a dau of OBEDIAH JOHNSON. Married 3 Mar 1852. SOURCE:Marriage Record Book Madison Co.Tn. 1838-1871 I don;t know if these Usserys are related although it's my guess that they are. I have EMily Johnson Ussery's place of death as Missouri, no date. She was born ca 1834, which I calculated from her age at time of 1850 census. I have no dates on Dempsey. Don't know if that helps at all. 3. Hey all, I was concerned about this company as you all were so I did a little looking into it. I wrote to the person and this was his reply: Thanks for your inquiry. We launched our business after retiring about 6 months ago and purchased copies of all the microfilm for available Tennessee death certificates at that time. We had previously offered the same services and more when we lived in Tennessee prior to 1996 but had to walk away from it when the company transferred us to South Carolina. The BBB here does not offer membership until you have been in business one full year. Apparently a lady in Texas that has used our service and was much frustrated with the Tennessee Archives has been posted positive feedback about us on many forums and the last few days have seen a nice boost in business for us. If you're interested in checking us out but want to proceed with caution, you could place a very small or single order to test the waters and come to your own conclusion about our service. Where did you hear about us? Thanks again for enquiring. 3. The message is from a lady that is spamming all the Tennessee counties and Tennessee Cemetery lists. Her messages have been taken off of the message boards, but her messages came through on the mailing list. She is probably going to a library that has the death certificates on microfilm, making copies for a quarter and then selling them for $4.00 and up. > [Original Message] > From: David Donahue <ddonahue@netease.net> > To: <TNMADISO-L@rootsweb.com> > Date: 2/27/2004 8:35:43 PM > Subject: [TNMADISO] Death Certificate Message is Commercial Advertisement > > The message about Tennessee Death Certificates seems to be a commercial > advertisement, not a list member being helpful.
