Barb: You and I corresponded some time ago re: the John C. Greer - Susan Carruthers family. I don't have anything new to add, except to suggest a thorough check of the Works of Jonathan KT Smith that is online at the Madison Co GenWeb site, if you haven't already. I, of course, checked family names in the index. I found so much information re: the families that interacted with my families, by reading through a volume or two. The Cartmell Diaries are a really good source for details of family in that time period. Good luck with your search and I'll be sure to send any new Carutthers finds along. Robert I. Chester (sometimes listed as Robert J. Chester) was one of the earliest settlers of Jackson, Tenn. His wife was Elizabeth Hays, the youngest daughter of Colonel Robert Hays and Jan Donalson [sic] the sister of Mrs. General Andrew Jackson, who had moved to Madison Co. in 1821 and settled near Jackson. By 1846 Chester was living at Elmwood, his plantation south of the South Fork of the Forked Deer River. Chester's great-great granddaughter was still living on some of the family land in 1990 when I wrote a newspaper article about the Chester family and the settlement south of the Forked Deer River. The old homeplace of William Butler Chester, son of Robert I. Chester, was still standing until the 1999 tornado that struck south Jackson. The old home was so structurally damaged that it had to be torn down. Jane's mother was living in house at the time of the tornado and lived for a little while in the new smaller house they built back in the same spot. Jane Chester Pafford died last year (or 2002, I can't remember exactly), but one of her two daughters still live in one of the Chester/Pafford homes on the old Chester land. J.C. Pafford is still listed in the BellSouth phone book. 427-6298. Don't know if her daughter has kept that number or not. Jane and her brothers all died fairly young. One of her brothers was in the first grade with me at Bemis Elementary. He died before entering the second grade. He was a hemophiliac (sp?) or free bleeder. His brother Jim died in his forties, and Jane, who passed away last year, was about 63 or 64 years old. Her mother lived into her 80s or 90s, so I'm going to assume that the health problems that caused her children's early deaths came from the Hays side. Her husband's name was Emmett Chester. If you would like a copy of this newspaper article faxed to you, just send me a fax number, and I'll be glad to fax it to you. Linda J. On Aug. 12, 1990, I published an article in The Jackson Sun which related historical information about land that was being developed into new subdivisions. In the article, I documented the following: "S. Caruthers is the name shown on the Southfork (name of the new subdivision) site on the 1877 landowners map. Until about 10 years ago an old house that was said to be a pre-Civil War house sat in the center of the beautiful pecan and cedar trees that Hickman (name of the developer) has managed to preserve. "This Caruthers was probably related to one of the founders of Jackson, James Caruthers. "'James Caruthers, one of the early surveyors and settlers, Dr. W.E. Butler, the father of Jackson, Robert J. Chester, Stokely D. Hays and Colonel Thomas Williamson, a senator from this district had all served under Jackson in the recent war against Britain (War of 1812),' wrote Emma Inman Williams, author of Historic Madison. "Since Robert J. Chester (known as Robert I. Chester) settled the area south of the South Fork of the Forked Deer River, owning the adjacent land to the S. Caruthers shown on the 1877 mpa, we can probably assume S. Caruthers was some kin to James." I also found out that "Miss Pearl Kirby, who lived in the old house untilher death in 1979, moved to th house with her father, Jim Kirby, in 1919. He died in 1924 and her aunt, Claudia Finch, lived with her until her death in 1944. With no descendents or relatives, Miss Pearl left her home and property to the American Red Cross at her death." I actually live about a half a mile from where this old house stood and I remember it being torn down (sometime before Hickman started in 1989 or 90 developing his new subdivision called Southfork). I had a Girl Scout troop that took food to Miss Pearl one Thanksgiving in the 1980s. The house was falling in at the front and she lived in one room in the back with at least 100 cats and no cat litter. Ha! You can imagine how it smelled. However, you could see that the house had at one time been a beautiful two-story mansion (mansion in terms of typical houses around here). Hope this helps your research in some way. Sorry that I was so long in getting back to you, but I had to dig to find copies or my newspaper articles from 1990. If you are a true genealogist, you will understand what I mean. You can obtain a copy of the 1877 property owners map on the Madison Co. Genweb site: http://www.tngenweb.org/madison/history/map-04e.jpg scroll over to the right and you will see S. Caruthers. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ozark Backwoods" <ozarkbackwoods@hotmail.com> To: <TNMADISO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 14, 2004 5:25 PM Subject: [TNMADISO] James Henry Carothers > I am looking for help and information about my 2nd Great Grandfather James > Henry Carothers. There are also two roads named after the Wise family in this area. I'm not sure we have the same person in mind, but I'm very anxious to hear from you as right now I find myself sitting on the shady side of the proverbial "brick wall" as far as ancestors of Isaac! I have some possibilities that I can share with you, but so far have not been able to "prove" anything before Isaac. Much too often, children were given names of favorite relatives which has been confusing in my search-(as my family seems to have raised this to an art form). Even if we find we have different "Isaac's", there hopefully,! will still be a connection due to this practice. I'm very anxious to hear from you. Having recently located one of my mother's cousins, in her eighties who has agreed to meet with me, I'm eager to see if this will open other details and possible connections.
