    2. Ref: message #4 from NNoe1313@aol.com. Your reminder to check out the works of Jonathan K. T. Smith proved very successful for me. I had been looking for several years for the place of birth of my gggrandfather, George R. Scott who died in Madison Co. and found it in the July-December 1887 abstracts of Death page 48. He was born in Davidson Co. Many thanks! Genevieve Scott Bell

    1. 1920 death certificates
    2. David Donahue
    3. http://www.tngenweb.org/madison/smith/deathc2-4.htm I uploaded Jonathan Smith's 1920 death certificate abstracts. I recignized three people: GENOIA F. FRAZER (female, w) Apr. 13, 1857, Tn.-Feb. 21, 1920, Jackson. Genoia Welch, Tn. Winnie Blont, Tn. Decaturville, Tennessee. This is Genora Welch, daughter of Isaiah Welch and Winnie Blount. I did not previously know Isaac's wife Winnie was a Blount, though I already had Winnie Blount in my database. Genora Welch married G. W. Frazier. All four are buried at Campground Cemetery, west of Decaturville. Campground is my cemetery. I have 17 ancestors here for sure and probably 2 more. F. R. BRAY (male, w) Nov. 13, 1847, 'Tn.-July 31, 1920, Jackson. John Bray, NC. Miderava(?) Walker, NC. Hollywood Cemetery. He was born in Lone Elm (Chesterfield), Henderson County. MARY JANE RUSHING (w) Dec. 18, 1826, Tn.-Dec. 18, 1920, Jackson. Bemis Cemetery. I cannot place her exactly in Rushing lines either from Benton Co. or from Decatur Co. And wouldn't you know that no parents are listed. Was she a Rushing by birth or marriage? If Rushing is her birth name, she probably would be the aunt of Sarah Dicy McNatt (also buried at Bemis). If so Mary Jane's mother would be Sarah Rushings in the 1850 census in Decatur County and her father possibly the older Asa Rushing in the 1840 census. David

    1. Re: [TNMADISO] James Henry Carothers
    2. Barb; Please go to the Madison Co. webpage and check out all the thousands of pages of good sources compliments of the hard work of Jonathan Smith! The Cartmell Diaries are a window on the lives of jacksonians in the mid19th- early 20th centuries. Robert Cartmell lived in Jackson from an old family. He kept a diary for yrs and yrs. on the comings and goings of various families in the County. His work is very valuable to us researchers, especially in your situation. What I did was copy and paste the entire thing , each volume, into a word document. Then I can go on the computer off line, and read it when I have time. It is very lengthy. I've printed out some of it as it's easier for me to read on paper. Also, in the scrapbooks of cemeteries and gleanings from genealogical records books Smith has done, he often will give an aside about the family or families involved -- who is related to whom, and he is quite thorough. He has a good deal about the Greers going back to Mecklenburg Co., NC. All very accurate. For those of us not near TN it is a blessing! Good luck and I'll keep my eyes open or Neely - Carruthers connections and any other connections. OH! I think Smith has a book of Court minutes online-- you might want to check there for the guardianship issues . I go to the book and there is always an index. Find the pages where the names are mentioned that you're looking for, and then go to the Edit on the toolbar. Scroll to "Find in top window" and enter the name you are searching for. It will jump right to all the entries on that page of that particular name. This is probably very basic to you-- forgive me if I'm telling you what you already know. This stuff was magic to me when I learned of it! Nancy

    1. Re: [TNMADISO] James Henry Carothers
    2. Thanks so much Nancy for staying in touch. I'm still getting no where on the Carruthers line but still looking. I have seen some of Mr. Smith's records while there in Jackson but have not looked at them on the Madison Co. page. I have never heard of the Cartmell Diaries but will certainly check it out. I keep hoping something will show up somethere to connect my Susan L. to her parents. The next time I am there in Jackson I plan to go and search the court records more thoroughly. I've looked years ago but did not have time to do all that I wanted to do. I am particularly interested in the court records about the guardianship papers for Louisa, James W. and John Franklin Carruthers as minors in 1841 to Samuel Neeley. I have not found a connection between this Neeley and the Carruthers - if there is one. Samuel Neeley apparently moved to Madison Co in 1840. There is a record in Mecklenburg Co, NC of marriage of James Carruthers to Peggy Swan Neeley 3 Oct. 1809 so they may have been related since the Greers were also there. Wishfully thinking I guess, but you never know. Thanks again for the suggestion and the update. Barb

    3. G. M. Savage was pastor of Mercer Baptist Church for many years, though this may not help in regard to an 1872 marriage since Mercer was a railroad town which originated when the Tennessee Midland Railroaf was built in the 1880s. There is a photo of G. M. Savage and mercer Baptist Church in G. E. Azbill's "Reminiscences of a Baptist Minister" http://www.tngenweb.org/madison/history/azbill.htm David

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JgB.2ACE/1068 Message Board Post: I would appreciate if someone could find a more legible 1900 census image. The image I have is from Heritage Quest, and the bottom of the page is too faint to make out most of the information. Here is what I was able to make out - 1900 US Census - 414 Dun Alley, Jackson, Madison County, Tennessee NA Series: T623 Roll: 1586 Page: 269 Sheet: 2B ED: 108 Date: 2 June 1900 D/F: 36/50 Milton Brooks, Head M W ??? 1870 ?????? Maud F. Brooks, Wife F W 186? ?????? Monica Brooks, Daughter F W 1891 ????? ??? Brooks, ??? 1894 ??? Brooks, ??? 1896 Gladis? Brooks, ??? Harriet Brooks, ??? Maud F. was my wife's "first cousin, three times removed". The 1910 census shows Maud as married, but her husband was not there. The 1910 census (in Pembina County, North Dakota) also shows that she had 7 children, 7 living, but only three of those 7 would have been old enough to have been shown in the 1900 census. It would appear that I am missing a child born before 1900 - possibly "Gladis". It also appears that the family was back in Illinois from about 1903 to 1908. Any help would be appreciated.

My Zebulon Rainey was on the 1830 census with several people in the family that I have not been able to identify. I have nothing documented on that family after that, except for an application in 1852 that shows he still lived in Madison Co. I am trying to find out just where he lived and the identity of any children. Could you please tell me if there are any Rainey, Rainy, Raney, Ramey, Rainy, (or other spellings) names on the 1840 census for Madison Co. Thank you very much. 3. http://www.tngenweb.org/madison/smith/deathc1-1.htm I enjoyed this work and got a lot out of it. I play with families in Decatur Co. and eastern Henderson Co., so someone who works Madison County families might get even greater benefits. For an insight into families I play with, here are the people I know: SARAH CAROLINE DUKE (w) Aug. 16, 1840, Tn-Oct. 16, 1914, Jackson G. Duke, Tn; Sallie Long, Tn Beacon, Tennessee She probably is buried in an unmarked grave at Duke Chapel Cemetery in Henderson County. She has three siblings buried there in marked graves and her parents are probably there in unmarked or unidentified graves. I did not know previously that her mother was a Long. MRS. SARAH JANE RAINS (w) Dec. 15, 1825, Tn-Nov. 5, 1915, Jackson John L. Houston, NC; ? Graham, NC Parsons, Tennessee Her mother was named Virginia Graham but was called Jennie. Sarah married (1) Burrell Rushing and (2) Winfred Z. (Rennie) Rains. I live a couple of hundred yards from the antebellum mansion Sarah occupied near Parsons. MRS. LOU STRICKLAND (w) Died CD 4, Sept. 21, 1917, abt 62 yrs Born Decatur Co., Tn. RC, Potter's Field John D. Stricklen married Lutica Russell, Feb. 16, 1872, in Decatur Co. MRS. ELIZABETH DAVIS (w) July 6, 1835, NC-Dec. 14, 1917, Jackson Joel Rushing, NC; Ziphia Dees, NC Parsons, Tennessee My jaw dropped when I saw this record. Ziphia (Zilpha, Zilphia, Zelphy) is my g-g-g-grandmother. I have never known her last name. Knowing she is a Dees I know her parents and some of her siblings. Zelphy and Joel are buried at New Hope Cemetery in Decatur County. Matilda Elizabeth Rushing married Louis Franklin Davis. They are buried in the Davis Cemetery southwest of Decaturville. MARGARET BRASHER (w) May 20, 1845, Decatur Co.-June 12, 1916, Beech Bluff Rocky Springs Margaret Catherine Wyatt, wife of Charles Riddle Brasher. I wish this record had given her parents. SARAH DICY McNATT (w) Feb. 27, 1860, Mo.-June 29, 1918, CD 8 Thomas Rushing, Tn; Amandia Jane Kelly Bemis Cemetery This Rushing family is in Decatur Co. in 1850, in Atchinson Co., Missouri in 1860, in Decatur Co. in 1870, and in Henderson Co. in 1880 and thereafter. She probably is descended from Rev. War Veteran Richard Rushing, but like most of Richard's family, you cannot prove it. I do not know the name of her husband. MRS. LEORA BELL JONES (w) Feb. 20, 1854, Decatur Co.-June 22, 1919 James Calvin, father Beacon, Tennessee Should not say Mrs. here. She was the daughter of James C. Jones and wife Sarah M. I wish this listed Sarah's last name. On Leora's tombstone at Mt. Zion Cemetery near Decaturville her death date is given as June 21, 1919. JOHN SMITH (w) Apr. 22, 1852, Tn.-Aug. 13, 1918, CD 8 Wash Smith, SC.; Jane White, SC Parsons, Tennessee I did not know his parents before. Now that I do, I can say that he is my first cousin four times removed and that he married (1) his half second cousin Sarah Margaret (Sallie) Welch and (2) his first cousin once removed Ida Mae Blackburn.
