Roll Call> ELLINGTON, WILLIAMS, MEDLIN, DAWES, TODD, CHRISTIE, CRAWFORD, GIST, THOMPSON Also looking for descendants of Martin Luther MOORE and wife, Mary E. Dawes. I am descended from the following families of the Madison county, some of whom lived in Madison Co., for a period of time, into surrounding counties, and back again at other times, and some whose area became known as Crockett Co., in 1871. Richard ELLINGTON and his 1st wife Elizabeth GRAVES came to Madison Co., by 1828 with their first 9 of 10 children. The 10th was born in Madison Co., in 1828/29. They came from Albemarle County in Virginia. Their 10 children were; Samuel, Unknown daughter (think she was "Mary", who married "Robert Toms", William H., Sophia, Malinda, Mary Ann, Winston, Angeline, John, & Sophronia. Richard remarried after his 1st wife died to "Ruthy Watson" in 1835 and had 7 more children; James Milton, Martha Ann, Richard, "Unknown Male", Henry C., Ephraim, and Zachariah. Richard married a 3rd time to Lousia "Unknown"-Norvell, a widow with 4 children. Richard and Louisa had no children together. Richard Ellington died in Dec. 1853 in Madison Co. Descendants of Richard's family both remained in Madison Co., and some migrated to Greene Co., AR., and others to Panola Co., Texas, and Lamar Co., Texas. **Richard Ellington's name was spelled as "ELLERTON" in Albemarle Co., VA., which is where he and wife Elizabeth Graves were married in Jan. of 1808. Richard was the son of John Ellerton, a land owner in Albemarle Co., VA., in both 1785 and 1790, the latter being the same year that Richard was born. Thomas WILLIAMS and Dille Ann MEDLIN, arrived in Madison Co., TN., by 1836 in the Walnut Hill area. They came from Franklin and Wake Co.'s, NC. This family founded Walnut Hill Baptist Church which is still active today, but became a part of Crockett Co., in 1871 when that county was formed. They had the following children; Meekins Ivory, Elizabeth, Matthew, Williford, Siddie Ann, Newton, Louisa Jane, Peter, & Berry H. Williams Many members of this family remained in this area all their lives. Some migrated to Greene Co., AR., & others to Lamar Co., Texas in the 1880's. Several also went to White Co. AR., briefly and later returned to Madison Co. William DAWES and Mariah TODD married in Madison Co., in Dec. 1840. Both were from NC. The "Dawes" came from Bertie and Hertford Co's., in NC. Mariah was the daughter of Aquilla Todd, born 1797 in Bertie Co., NC. He died in Crockett Co., TN., in Dec. 1876. William Dawes, died in Dec. of 1859 in Madison County, TN. William was the son of Starkey Daws Sr., and Elizabeth Fairless, who migrated to TN., by 1830. Other children of Starkey Dawes Sr., were; James, Elizabeth, Jacob, Charity, Joseph, Julia, Alexander, and Starkey Jr. William Dawes and Mariah Todd had the following children, some born in Madison Co., and others likely in Haywood Co., where they were enumerated in 1860; Mary, Martha Ann, William James (or James William), Mariah Francis, and Starkey. Martha Ann and Mariah Francis married in Madison Co., and Martha Ann died in Crockett Co., in 1878. Martha Ann married James Edward "Ned" Ellington about 1865 and had the following 4 children with him; Mary Louise "Molly", James "Jim", Edd, and Minnie Lee Ellington. Mariah Francis Dawes married Thomas D. Hoppers and migrated to Prentiss Co., Mississippi where she lived out her life. Thomas D. Hoppers was a son of George Hoppers and Mary Dillard, who migrated to Madison Co., from Surry Co., NC. Mary's father "John Dillard" also migrated to Madison Co., TN., by 1829. I am at a loss to find, "Willam James Dawes", following 1860 when he last appeared on the Madison Co., census, with his widowed mother, Mariah Todd- Dawes. Because of the lack of his name, among his other siblings, in the probated estate proceeding of his grandfather, Aquilla Todd in 1877, naming them all as heirs by decent, I believe William James Dawes had already died. Mariah Todd-Dawes remarried to William P. Hoppers between the 1860 census when she was a widow and the 1870 census when she appeared with William P. Hoppers. Mariah apparently died between 1870 and 1873 as William P. Hoppers married again to Nancy Carr in 1873. William P. Hoppers and Mariah were living next door to her married daughter, Martha Ann Dawes-Ellington and her husband "James Edward "Ned" Ellington in 1870. Starkey "Stark" Dawes, the youngest son of Mariah Todd and William Dawes, appeared in the household of Joseph T. Hoppers in 1880 in Weakley Co., TN., as a farm laborer. I believe Joseph T. Hoppers was a son of William P. Hoppers and a step-brother of Stark Dawes. I haven't found Stark after that census in 1880, and while he was named in his grandfather's probated estate proceedings in 1877, he did not, according to court minutes, make an appearance. Joseph T. Hoppers and his wife returned to Madison Co., by 1900 and were living next door to William P. Hoppers and 3rd wife Nancy. Mary E. Dawes, born c1843, the eldest daughter of William Dawes and Mariah Todd was married to Martin Luther Moore sometime shortly after 1860. They last appeared on the 1870 Madison Co., TN. census, with several children. I can't find them after this. I would like to find them and any descendants. The surname spelling of the Dawes family has varied from Dawes, Daws, Douse, & Doers in the various records. Frank Bratton CRAWFORD and Ruth Catharine EVANS migrated to Madison Co., from Giles Co., TN. His father was Carter T. Crawford, the son of Anthony Crawford from Lincoln Co., TN. Anthony came to TN., from KY., and previous to that from NC., and VA. Frank B. and wife "Ruth Catharine" moved to the 9th district of Madison Co., in 1888. They had 10 children; William Alexander, James Carter, George Thomas, Lizzie Mary, Susie B., Carrie B., Annie May, Tipp Lou, John Frank, and Felix Riley Crawford. My great-grandfather was James Carter Crawford who married Delia "Delar May" Butler in Madison Co., TN., in 1895. They had the following children; Claude, Willie, Frank Porter, Robert, Minnie, Ruby, Jewel, Cricket, Bertha, and Dora Bell. This family lived where the Poplar Corner Baptist Church and Cemetery is now located off Hwy 412, and George Thomas Crawford, a brother of James Carter Crawford, donated the land for both. Many members of this family are buried at the Poplar Corner Cemetery. William CHRISTIE and Charlotte THROWER came to Haywood Co., TN., by 1837 from Halifax Co., NC. They lived on the county line between Madison and Haywood Co.'s. They had the following children; Sarah "Sallie", Jesse Thomas, Robert J., John Howard (who moved to Dyer Co.), Bryant A., Elizabeth, and Dorotha Lucinda. Elizabeth married Joseph Boseman, had one son "Jesse T. Boseman" and died, possibly in childbirth by 1854. Bryant A., lived in Madison Co., for a time, until sometime between 1854-1860 when he and siblings; Robert J., and sisters Sallie (with husband "Wilson P. Miles"), and Dorotha Lucinda (with husband "W. Dickerson/Dickinson") migrated to Brazos Co., Texas. Jesse Thomas Christie, b.1815 in Halifax Co., NC., continued to live in Haywood Co., until His wife's name was Catharine (possibly "Smith", a daughter of a "Mary (possibly "Kirby-Smith"), both born in Va). They had several children including my g.g.grandfather "William H. Christie" b.1846. He married LeElla McNeil/McNeal, a daughter of Neil A. McNeal/McNeil, a son of Archibald McNeil, also from NC. They had several children, and William remarried twice more following her death. William was an attorney in Brownsville in the 1880's. His son "Walter Lee Christie" was born in Dec. 1868 and was my great-grandfather. Walter married Minnie Lee Ellington in Crockett Co., in 1898 and died there in 1903. Their children were; Walter Vernon "Bill" Christie, Virgie Jewell Christie-Lovelace, and Lorene Christie-Crawford, my grandmother. Nancy Jane PACE, born in c1839 in Alabama, (likely in Franklin Co.) grew up in Marion Co., AL., and married James Harve GIST (GUESS) about 1855. They moved to Marion Co., AL., by 1860 and had three children; Nancy Ann Gist, c1856, Talita J. Gist, c1859 and John Posey Gist, b. c. 1861. After the Civil War, Nancy Jane remarried to Benjamin Franklin Thompson in 1869 in Old Tishomingo Co., MS, where she, her children and father had all moved about 1867-68. Nancy Jane was in Madison Co., in 1910, living with son, W.B. Thompson in the 17th district. I think his name was "Boon". I believe I found this family living in Hardin Co., TN., in 1880. Nancy Jane's eldest daughter, Nancy Ann Gist is my line and we believe she was 1st married about 1875 to a man named "BUTLER". But by 1900, she was living in Madison Co, TN., married to James Franklin Thompson. She had 7 children; Alonzo, & Delia May (both believed to be "Butler's) and the younger 5, believed to all be by James F. Thompson; Mattie, Lewis, Vertie, Bessie, and Blanche Tiney. I would like to find the missing "BUTLER" husband and to verify for sure that he was the father of Alonzo and Delia May. Delia May is my line. I would also like to contact any descendants of the other children who lived to marry and have children; Vertie, Bessie, and Blanche Tiney. Christi Crawford Partee [email protected]

He is related to me and I dont know what his first name was, I think the "Moon" was just a nickname. I dont know who his relatives were. I remember his place as far back as I can remember and my Mother said a lot of times we were related but I dont ever remember meeting him except in 1960 I sold him a car.
