    2. Dear Sandra: Thanks for the help. The obit was from 1915--his daughter was quite elderly when she died. I do know how newspapers can make mistakes in obits. In a message dated 12/7/03 2:19:57 PM, ihunt4kin@hotmail.com writes: << Holw old is this obituary that you are getting this information from? Have you checked the Tennessee land grants?>> It is very possible that a land grant was involved, and I think it worth some research into the Alexander in Rutherford Co Census. I have been trying to track Alexander's land ownership in Madison Co., and from whom his land was purchased or possibly inherited. I've just begun this research, so I only have 2 deeds so far. Dates were 1823, so it's possible that he had land in Rutherford or another county that was sold and he moved on to Madison, or he held deeds to land simultaneously in more than 1 county. Much to ponder! Thanks for the county formation links. Nancy

    2. Thanks Tela, for the info on Hardeman Co. That is a clue worth following up. My Alexander had a brother, James A. Greer who ended up in Jackson too, but he went a different route I believe, than Alexander. James married in Lincoln Co.TN and then found his way to Jackson. He married Delia McElroy, but perhaps the J.R. Greer is a son of his. I'll have to check it out. Thanks! Nancy

    3. Hi Nancy, Don't know if I can help you much but the following link tells when each county was formed and what the parent county was. http://www.tngenweb.org/counties.htm Holw old is this obituary that you are getting this information from? Was it written at the time your Alexander lived in Madison Co, or years later? I don't think I would have a lot of confidence in the validity of the info that you obtained from the obituary. Those are frequently incorrect...even in today's world. My JORDAN family lived in Bedford Co, TN, in 1820 which is located in middle Tennessee and is a neighboring county of Rutherford. I've seen the name GREER in early Bedford Co, TN, records. My JORDANs obtained land grants in Madison & Henderson Counties in the 1830s or 1840s (can't remember the date at the moment) and they were settled in Henderson Co by 1840. Anyway, I'm wondering if your Alexander could have lived in Rutherford and obtained a land grant about this same time. Have you checked the Tennessee land grants? At this point, if I were you, I would be searching Rutherford Co, TN, records to see if you can find out who this Alexander GREER is that is enumerated in the 1820 census. I don't know about Rutherford Co, but whoever recorded the deeds in Bedford Co, TN, must have been a genealogist because the land records contain very good genealogical info in them. Hope this helps! :o) Sandra >From: NNoe1313@aol.com >Reply-To: TNMADISO-L@rootsweb.com >To: TNMADISO-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [TNMADISO] Land question re: Madison,Henderson and Rutherford >Counties. >Date: Sat, 6 Dec 2003 10:34:07 EST > >Hello listers; >I've been searching for the whereabouts of my Alexander Greer in the 1820 >1830 & 1840 censuses. 3. No. Only one Jackson in Tennessee. Designated Jackson by the Tenn. legislature in 1822. Founders of the settlement here submitted the name "Alexandria" to the legislature in early Aug. 1822, but seeing that there was already an Alexandria, the legislature decided to name this new town in the recently acquired (1818) western district "Jackson" to honor Andrew Jackson, who lead the neogiations for the U.S. in the purchase of the Chickasaw territory that included West Tennessee and parts of northwest Mississippi. The legislature's actions took place later in Aug., 1822, so the city of Jackson was only known as Alexandria for a matter of days. ----- Original Message ----- From: <bibofin@aol.com> To: <TNMADISO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, December 05, 2003 5:05 PM Subject: [TNMADISO] BOLIN/BOWLING/BOLEN > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JgB.2ACE/1029 > > Message Board Post: > > My grandfather's death certificate lists his place of birth as Jackson, TN. 1. [TNMADISO] Land question re: Madison,Henderson and Rutherford Counties.
    2. Hello listers; I've been searching for the whereabouts of my Alexander Greer in the 1820 1830 & 1840 censuses. From his daughter's obituary, I know that he was in Madison Co IN 1823. He first lived in the 10 civil District and then built in the 14th. What years this refers to, I don't know. In the 1820 Census, I find no Alexander Greer in Madison Co. as it should be. In the 1830 Census, looking on Ancestry.com census online, I find only 1 Alexander Greer in Rutherford Co. TN In the 1840 Census, I find 2 Alexander Greers both in Henderson Co. TN. Is it possible that the land on which Alex. Greer lived stayed the same, just the county in which it fell changed? I do remember that parts of Madison were taken to form Henderson and other counties. Much thanks for any assistance! Nancy
