W. D. HANES owned a Drug Store in the 1880's at Alton Hill (now part of Lafayette), Macon County, TN which included the post office. He had a telephone in the building. This was next to his sister's house, Betty ROBINSON and the telephone wire was connected to the two buildings. I have a letter written to his nephew, Robert E. Lee HANES (my grandfather), who had moved to Kansas. In this letter he spoke of friends and relatives who lived there in Macon County: the ROSES; Frank SMITH; George DILLARD; Jim KEY; Dad WHITE; Elisha; Alice; Margy; Jess; George; Jimmy ROBINSON; Lou MAYHEW; Tymander KEMP; Wiley WOODCOCK; Nat HARKINS; Lawson SIMMONS. He also spoke of "my people in KY & up above". I have a book that was bought at W. D. HANES's Drug Store as well as an advertisement for "Piso Cure for Consumption, price 25 cts". One day when he was near the telephone an electrical storm came up and a bolt of lightning hit the telephone wire and killed him instantly. This happened sometime after 1881. Does anyone remember this story, perhaps, handed down in the family? Or recognize any of the names? I would like to correspond with you. Dorothy Hamill
