Ruth Muhleck Ruth, this information is partially correct. I'll give you some references of what I have. Phebe Jones was first married to Benjamin Hawkins. Abt. September 09, 1767. Some say Benjamin Hawkins may have died in Lexington KY as a result of wounds received in the Rev. War? But I also have a death date for him of Sept. 9, 1783 which I picked up online so not sure if that is acurate. Some say he died in Granville Co. NC? Phebe had 3 children with Benjamin Hawkins Robert b. ca 1775 Sarah "Sally" b. ca 1777 Mary "Polly" b. ca 1779 Phebe Jones (Hawkins) married Thomas Gregory, Jr. Oct. 18, 1787, Grandville Co. NC. Brent H. Holcomb's "Marriages of Granville County, North Carolina"notes that Thomas Gregory m Pheby Hawkins, date of bond, 18 Oct 1787 with Gabriel Jones as Witness and John Searcy as Witness I found this reference online and have not confirmed it myself. Thomas Gregory, Jr. will is found in Surry Co. NC and is online on the Smith Co. Exs: Thomas Gregory, Jr. & James Gregory, sons. Probate July 1845. So 'Big Tom' Gregory died in Smith Co. TN between 28 May 1845 when his will was written and July 1845 when it was probated in Smith Co. TN. I had NC as Phoebe's death place, but I'm not sure thats acurate. If she died in NC it was probably Surry Co. but according to Cal Gregory she came to Smith Co. TN and died there. Per Cal's Column, June 11, 1953, Phoebe, who is buried on the waters of Peyton's Creek, perhaps on the present farm of Richard Stafford. I have also seen Phebe's mother listed as Catherine Collins but I don't know if that has ever been confirmed? Her father was Ambrose Jones His will was written 2 Jan 1792 Granville Co. NC and proved Nov. 1792 so he died Jan 1792-Nov. 1792. She appeared to be still living on 7 Nov 1799 when she relinquised right and title to Ambrose Jones estate to be released for public sale. The children heirs did the same on Nov. 8 1799. I think all that info is found on the link above concerning Ambrose Jones Will and estate. Thomas Jr.'s Parents Thomas Sr. 1730 -1818 was in Chathan Co. NC before coming to Smith Co.
