Hello Mary, Mary and Lanice. I am descended through Thomas BROOKS and his first wife, Peggy ADAMS also and then through their daughter, Ethel Estelle BROOKS, my great grandmother. Ethel's mother had been a brickwall for years. I broke though it when I received a copy of Ethel's social security application where she listed her mother as Peggy ADAMS. This is the only document that I am aware of that shows a relationship between Ethel and her mother, Peggy Adams. Several years back, I paid a professional genealogist in the middle Tenn area to search for this Peggy Adams since I am over a thousand miles away. Her report back confirmed that Peggy is a nickname for Margaret. She also placed Margaret "Peggy" Adams in the John Adams family that Mary Knight is showing in the census records. Since so many records have been destroyed, I have become comfortable in accepting this although I would like to locate at least one document proving it. I was very surprised when I saw Mary show the same family in her post. Mary, have you done research on this family? Also, one of Ethel's granddaughters verbally told me that Thomas Brooks and his first wife, Peggy, had four children.
Hi Gary, No I haven't really researched this ADAMS family until a few days ago but I do have the BROOKS family in my files. Neither of these families are a direct tie to my husbands family but I'm one of those people that has to have all the connecting families in my files! :-) I was trying to help Lanice find her ADAMS and this Margaret E. daughter of John M. (W?) Adams seems to be the only Margaret Adams that fits age wise. There are only two Margaret Adams in 1870 Macon Co. census and they are both living with John M. ADAMS (listed as John M. 1850 & 1860 & John W. in 1870 and J. M. 1880) One Margaret L. appears to be his sister and Margaret E. appears to be his daughter. I've searched the last few days to see if I could find anything on John Adams b. ca 1810 VA and Margaret Unknown b. 1811-1812 VA and have found nothing but census records. I did find however a death notice for a Miss Maggie (another nickname for Margaret) Adams the last living child of John Adams that I believe is Margaret L. b. ca 1856. So this leads me to believe that all of John Adams b. 1810 children were dead by 1885. And probably the reason it has been so difficult for you to find anything on this Adams family. It appears to me the only Child of John Adams b. ca 1810 VA, that had any children was John M. & Frances O. (Pinckley)? I will send the death notice info to you and Lanice by private mail because it is copyrighted. Mary Knight Hello Mary, Mary and Lanice. Mary, Mary and Gary; I also descend from Thomas Brooks and his first wife, Peggy Adams, and then through their daughter, Ethel Estelle BROOKS, my grandmother. Gary and I have corresponded over this mystery. I have to agree with Gary's reasoning. And like him, I would love to have documentation. And so the search continues, **smiles**. As a member of the Macon County County Historical Society I have done much research on people in 6th and 7th district of Macon County. We hope to do a book called Macon Roots that contains a "group sheet" on each household listed in 1850 census of Macon County. The Society as a whole has contributed information to add maiden names and other information to all census records from 1850 thru 1910 and these are already published in books. We are so thankful that Calvin Gregory and Goodspeed and other older researchers left us their works that we want to help those who come after us. Here is your family in District 7 1850. This if for Macon Roots book If anyone can fill in my blanks, it would certainly help.
