Michael, Our Charlie and Smith Jones did not have a bro. named James. It was sheriff Hanes that aressted the other boys and the picture was taken (I believe )from an old newpaper, so should be easy to ck. as Macon Co. archives located in Lafayette Library has the old newspapers on film. Now I do believe there was a connection with Jones families . I have come across a couple that named several of their children the same. I will busy keeping a 3yr. old this week so don't expect to get a lot of research done. Happy Hunting. I do know their names where Charlie and Smith Jones. I am not for sure who the sheriff was (I don't have my book with me right now.) There Brother James Jones was my GGG Grandfather. Hi Anna I too understand the importance of documentation, but like you have bits of info in the computer that I can't recall where it came from. So I must search though my notes to find it. From: Joyce Stasel Bobby, are you the Bobby L. West, listed pg 319, in the Hoke West Book, "What is in a Name"? Hello, Joyce, That's a different Bobby L. West. I'm not mentioned in the book. My WEST line is as follows: Elder Miles WEST, Berry WEST, Albert Dixon WEST, Taylor Clay WEST, Walter Marshall WEST, and me. Bobby, if you go to the Smith Co. website (pictures), you will find a picture of Thomas and Sallie(Gregory) Gregory with birth and death dates. Thanks for waking me up. I should have remembered that because I had seen those pictures earlier but I wasn't doing the GREGORY line at the time. I guess I just had a temporary brain freeze. Bobby L. West
Mary, I wonder if Ad could be the same as James born Jan 1881. Could very well be the Adison you listed on 1910 Macon which I had but do not have him placed. Don't know Nancy, I don't have 1900 census info. According to Elizabeth Murratti website their children were: Children Mary Elizabeth GREGORY b: 29 Aug 1877 in Tennessee James GREGORY b: 1881 William GREGORY b: Jun 1883 in Tennessee Linda GREGORY b: Aug 1887 in Tennessee Mamie GREGORY Mamie according to Lisa's postem was a nickname for Amanda Susan Gregory. On Victoria A. Cartwright b. Oct. 21, 1877: My computer is asking is this Victoria the same as Victoria Cartwright spouse of Isham Jefferson Gregory, S/O Simpson Lee Gregory? Same? Yes, I think so! :-) She's the only Victoria Cartwright I find. Daughter Charles Jefferson Cartwright & Sarah Jane Gregory. Here again Victoria's birth year bothers me some. She was 1 year old in 1880 and 31 in 1910 making her born ca 1879 rather than 1877? The birth date I got from Barbara Gammons LaValley Rootsweb file. She also has her listed as daughter of Charles & Sarah and married to Isham Jefferson Gregory, S/O Simpson Lee Gregory Thanks for all the Ky. info, I got several death dates I did not have. Nancy & Michelle, I've been researching this and I believe Lucinda & Elizabeth are sisters. Some of the dates and info I got from a couple Rootweb Worldconnect files and they can't seem to agree on the parents of Richard Coons so I will start with him. Could find nothing on him in the History of Smith Co. Richard "Uncle Dick" Coons b. Oct 1823 Jackson Co. TN d. March 23, 1908 Macon Co. TN married & Esther or Easter BEAL b. ca 1820 (according to Cal). Jackson Co. 1850 Richard COONSE 27 b. TN Esther 29 b. TN Sally 3 b. TN William 1 b. TN Sarah 2 b. TN (Did they have two Sarah's or is this someone elses child?) I believe Richard & Esther were still in Jackson Co. in 1860 Census or possibly Clay Co. It looks like there were Coons (Many various spellings) in Clay Co. that were related to the Coons in Jackson Co. TN. I don't have access to either census to check that out. By 1870 Richard & Easter were in Smith Co. 1870 Smith Co. (Transcription notes, Coonts or Counts*, unsure) Co**ts, Richard 50 farmer 225 b. TN Co**ts, Easter 50 keeping house b. TN I had the marriages of some of their children and picked up the rest from a Rootweb file Submitted by Elizabeth Murratti. I think I agree with what she has on Richard's children in the most part but she has different parents for him than a couple other researchers. Here's what I have for the children of Richard & Easter (BEAL) COONS. (various spellings I've found so far for Richards children. COONS, COONTS, COONTZ, COUNCE) 1. Sarah A. "Sallie" Coons b. ca 1847 Jackson Co. TN. No marriage or Death info for her. Elizabeth Murratti lists a Sally Coons and a Sarah Coons as daughters but I wonder again if the 2 year old Sarah in 1850 Jackson is a child of Richard? This one needs work. No 2. William "Bill" Coons b. ca 1848 married Jane Shoulders March 27, 1869, Smith County, TN. I'm confused here? Elizabeth Murratti gives his wife as Jane GREGORY. I find one Lajanes or Lujane Shoulders b. ca 1852-1855 daughter of Link Shoulders but she is still with her parents in 1870 so I don't think its her? http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnsmith/census/1870/78B.HTM 1870 Census Coonts* William 22 b. Elizabeth is 10 in 1870, 20 in 1880 and 49 in 1910 census. Which would put her birth more along the lines of 1859-1861. 1870 census Amanda is 8 and 18 in 1880 two years younger Elizabeth Coons, and Elizabeth Murratti gives Amanda's birth as Nov 1863 making Elizabeth and Amanda seem to be twins? and they are clearly about 2 years apart in age according to census. TN Malinda Coons b. ca 1852, Jackson Co. TN Sally Coons ca 1847, Jackson Co. TN Sarah Coons ca 1847, Jackson Co. TN I question whether there were two daugthers named Sarah "Sally" etc.? And I don't have any census info on Nancy or Malinda. She also gives Matilda's birth as ca 1867 which is wrong according to my calculations. She's 18 in 1870 so born ca 1852. So I wonder if she has confused Malinda with Matilda? Here is a listing that Elizabeth Murratti has for the children: Children Sally COONS b: Abt 1847 in Jackson County, Tennessee Sarah COONS b: 1847 in Jackson County, Tennessee William "Bill" COONS b: 1848 in Jackson County, Tennessee Nancy COONS b: 1850 in Jackson County, Tennessee Malinda COONS b: 1852 in Jackson County, Tennessee Lucinda COONS b: 1854 in Jackson County, Tennessee Don Alvin COONS b: Sep 1855 in Jackson County, Tennessee Zachariah "Zack" COONS b: Abt 1858 in North Springs, Jackson County, Tennessee Amanda "Mandy" COONS b: Nov 1863 Elizabeth "Bettie" COONS b: 2 Nov 1863 in Jackson County, Tennessee Matilda COONS b: Abt 1867 in Jackson County, Tennessee I think this is all the damage I can do at the moment! :-) Mary Knight Nancy, Lisa, and Mary, My ggg grandmother's name was Lucinda Coons d/o Richard "Dick" Coons, who married Ambrose Gregory s/o of Big Tom and Elizabeth Gregory. Lucinda did live at Mace's Hill. Do you think this might be the same family as you Elizabeth Coons? Michelle
Bobby, you are correct of course; that should be Bettie (Bry) Gregory. I find that she is often referred to as Bettie Bry, and I tend to think of her as Bettie Bry. Bro. Cal Gregory has some wonderful stories about Bry Gregory. I'm sure you are familiar with his books.
