Is there any Carter's still living in Macon Co. that there family lived there in the 1870's? I'm looking for family of Thomas Carter and wife Elizabeth both of them was from N.C. but died in Macon in middle of 1870's.

From: Mary Knight Here's a wild guess for you BL. Harriett HARGIS SHRUM b. December 23, 1825 widow of Asa Joyner SHRUM. Daughter of Howell Henry Hargis & his first wife Lucy TUCK. She would have been a niece by marriage to John Richard Brooks. I don't know where she was in 1877. Thanks, Mur, That being the case, I have a stronger connection to Harriett HARGIS SHRUM through the HARGIS line than through the SHRUM line. Being a niece of John Richard BROOKS would probably explain why he sold her 50 acres of land on a verbal contract in 1872. Apparently she was in Macon Co. at that time, although she never appeared at any of the court sessions which ran quarterly from 11 Feb 1875 to 17 Feb 1881. She paid $100 of the $200 contract and the court foreclosed on her contract when she failed to appear and pay the balance plus interest during the distribution of John Richard BROOKS' estate. From: Ruth Muhleck Bobby, On anscestry.com John Richard Brooks has a daughter named Harriet R. Hi, Ruth, Harriett R. Brooks is listed among the heirs as being the wife of M. D. L. Gammon. Harriett SHRUM is not listed as being one of the heirs. She is listed under the "et al" group. I was curious as to her identity and wondering if she was connected to any of my SHRUMs. The court records do not indicate whether Harriett SHRUM is married, single, divorced, or widowed. According to the court records, John Richard Brooks, Sr. owned several tracts of land totaling somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000 acres. He died intestate and heirs and "et als" showed up saying that J. R. Brooks, Sr. had sold them various numbers of acres on a verbal contract. Those who could prove that purchase money had changed hands were allowed to keep the land provided that they finished paying for it. Harriett SHRUM claimed to have purchased 50 acres on a verbal contract but was not able to retain a title to it because of a financial problem so her interest in the land was denied by the court. Land not sold under verbal contract was sold by the court and the proceeds distributed among the heirs, it being the court's decision that the land not sold under a verbal contract could not be divided among the heirs without adversely affecting the value of the land. Interesting item: John Richard Brooks, Sr. sold the land on a verbal contract with no interest but the court added interest onto the unpaid portions of the contract The court also calculated state and county tax back to the day of the sale of the property that was sold on a verbal contract and added that to the unpaid balance and interest. So concludes a short history on how the courts handled real estate belonging to people who died intestate back in "the good ol' days". Incidentally, John Richard Brooks, Sr. was/is my g-g-g-grandfather. Bobby L.

It says she Married Charles Uhles b.1832 d. 1865 then it appears she married Marquis Dero Gammons b. Oct. 14, 1844 in Macon Co. Tn.d. May 2, 1911 in Thompsonville IL. But nothing about her marrying a Shrum, but of course she could have.
