Barbara - I really appreciate your starting the Mail List. I have at least two ancestors from Macon County, perhaps more, and I have quite a few from adjacent Sumner County, including some who lived very close to the Macon County Line. Macon County Ancestors: SLOAN - JACKSON Ancestors probably from Macon County: ISLEY - JONES Some of my Sumner County Names: ARMSTRONG - CAVITT/CAVETT - GANT - GROVES - HUTCHESON - LINK - RONEY JOHN SLOAN, my 4th great grandfather (b. Lancaster County, PA, 1759; d. 1842 in Macon County)married Mary Ann Gardner, and I believe they both died in Macon County. His ggrandson HEZEKIAH ELISHA SLOAN was born in Macon County, May 14, 1842, and he married EMILY LILLIAN JACKSON, b. 1839. I know nothing more about her. My GANT ancestors (JOHN HENRY, HENRY A., AND JACOB R.) lived in/or near Macon County. John Henry Gant had a farm on Highway 52 about seven miles East of Portland. In 1926 my parents Robert Lee and Anne Armstrong Gant honeymooned at Red Boiling Springs. I have black and white snapshots they took with an old Kodak box camera. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Nashville, my hometown. I have extensive documentation on the Gants, Armstrongs, and Links back to the early eighteenth century, and I am most happy to share with anyone. Helen Gant Donald Columbus, GA
Barbara, We have been in touch. As a member of the Macon County Historical Society I took it upon myself to monitor the page. With your permission I can take printouts of the digest to the monthly meeting and perhaps aid in helping others make a connection. That is what Genealogy is about and as you know our members have collected a wealth of information on Macon County Families for the express purpose of sharing. My Macon County Surnames that I research are: Shrum, Cole, and Driver. Good luck with your endeavors and Thanks for a job well done! Shelta R. McCarter Shrum http://www.nctc.com/~ghsrum/mahis.htm

This is my first posting on the Macon County Mail List, and I want to especially thank those of you who started it. Macon County also has an excellent Genweb page. My Great Grandfather HEZEKIAH ELISHA SLOAN (son of ROBERT WILSON SLOAN and RUTH JONES) was born in Macon County, May 14, 1842, and he died in Macon County on September 14, 1914. Hezekiah Sloan married EMILY LILLIAN JACKSON IN 1869. He was the great grandson of JOHN SLOAN and MARY ANN GARDNER. Hezekiah and Emily Jackson Sloan had at least two children: Robert F. Sloan, who appears to have died quite young Hester Sloan (b. May 7, 1874; d. May 22, 1955) My Grandmother, HESTER SLOAN married JOHN HENRY GANT, son of Henry A. Gant and Helen Shanklin, and they had two children: my Father, ROBERT LEE GANT (1901-1980) and my Aunt Emma Eulalia Gant Martin. Hester and John Henry (Jack) Gant lived on Highway 52, about seven miles East of Portland. (1) I believe that JOHN SLOAN was the first of this line to live in the area that became Macon County in 1842. I am very interested in exchanging information with any descendants of John Sloan, Robert Wilson Sloan, or his father Hezekiah Sloan (grandfather of Hezekiah Elisha Sloan. (2) I am interested in ANY information that would help me identify the parents of EMILY LILLIAN JACKSON and RUTH JONES. In addition, I am looking forward to learning more about the history and families of Macon County.
