    3. Hello, Being the GGGrandson of Eli Byron Meador and Celia Jackson Glover and an avid researcher of the Meador/Glover/Turner/Walton families, I have recently discovered some information that may not be widely known and would like to pass it along. One of the many challenges I have had is to look at the 1850 through 1870 Macon County census records and attempt to figure out who is who in the Edward Glover household. Edward was first married to Mary "Polly" Walton, but by the 1850 census Polly is dead and the census reads as follows: Edward Glover, age 60 Hettie, age 27 Archy, age 26 Agnes, age 23 Joseph, age 1 Delila, age 5 Taylor, age 3 My assumption was that Hettie was Edward's daughter as most researchers seem to believe, Archy was Archibald Glover, who entered into the 9th Ky. Inf. during the Civil War and died in 1862, Agnes would be Archy's wife and the three children belonged to Archy and Agnes. Assuming this, I started to look for information on each of the children, concentrating on "Taylor". Unable to locate a "Taylor" Glover and figuring that he may have been named for "Zachary Taylor", I hit the jackpot. There was a "Zachariah Glover appearing on the 1870 and 1880 Allen County, Ky. census. Zachariah had married Arminta Cole, daughter of Amos Cole and Elizabeth Alexander in Allen County on September 6, 1867. Finding this, I started looking for additional information and much to my surprise, found that this same Zachariah Glover had served in the 1st Tenn. Mtd. Inf. (Union) during the Civil War under the alias of "John G. Glover" and had later applied for a pension. I immediately sent for the full pension file, still under the assumption that Zachariah was the son of Archibald Glover and had probably joined the Army using the name of his uncle, John Green Glover. So much for assumptions. When I finally received the pension file, there was a copy of a two page letter that Zachariah had written in 1918. I have used Zachariah's spelling. Plant City, Fla. Aug 9, 1918 "in answer to your inquiring letter of my history I give you the nearest and best answer that I can now. my father and mother never kept any record of there famley they both all ways said that I was born September the 19th, 1845 in macon Co. Tennessee near Lafayette Tennessee. My father and mother came from Virginia and I am the only child that was born to there union. They are both dead. I lived with them in the years 1850 1860 and I inlisted in the civil war division Sec. D in 1863 Ctp. No. 810.688. Company E. 1st. Tenn, mtd inf. my officers are all dead as far as I know. My fathers name was Edward Glover and my mothers name was Hester Glover. So I cannot furnish the famley record for they did notkeep any so you see that I cant comply with your request hope you will get some information out of what I have rote. Yours truly, Zachariah T. Glover" Also included in the file was a transcript of the 1850 Edward Glover household in Macon County that the Pensions office took as proof of birth. So this would seem to suggest that "Hettie" was Hester and not a daughter, but Edward's second wife. This would mean that Edward was married three times, first to Polly Walton, second to Hester, and third to Nancy. I hope this information is of interest to my fellow researchers. Owen Howard

I will go through some of the things I did for my Johnson Journal a few years back, we claim Cherokee heritage on that side but it's from Clay, Jackson, and Polk County, TN as well as Union, and Gilmer County, GA and Lincoln Co., NC. 1. Re: [TNMACON] Parker Marsh
    2. ~~Melody~~ ~~~~~~~~
    3. Karl, What you have said is very interesting. This is what family tradition has told us: Queen Victoria Swindle Claimed to be 1/4 Cherokee..she was my husband's grandmother. William Jenkins Swindle claimed to be part Cherokee, he was "Vic's" brother. Jenks was married twice and children from each family did not associate. But descendants of both Jenks and Vic all have the same story and did not compare notes until we met on the internet. Vic Swindle married William Noah Carter and there is no Native American Blood in the family on either lines of his side. Yet they lived in an area of Macon County that is said to be a Cherokee meeting ground. Many family members have stories of kin gathering arrowheads prior to 1930. That brings us back to Vic's side. Vic's parents were Jobe Anderson Swindle and Arabel Butrum. Ara's parents were James L. Butrum and Margaret Ann Steenbergen, (known by research) neither had Native American heritage. This leaves Jobe Swindle, son of Peledge Spencer Swindle and Philadelphia East. We can eliminate Peledge as we have traced him back with no rumors of Native American heritage, and pretty complete records for a number of generations. His wife Philadelphia's mother is Matilda Marsh, sister of Philip. This generation would put Vic at less than a quarter Cherokee, even if one of her great grandparents (Matilda) was full blooded. So it seems she was wrong about being 1/4. One tradition we all have in common is that there is Cherokee in this particular family. If Matilda is Philip's sister, it would seem the Cherokee would be on their side. What do you know of Charles' wife, Elizabeth? Might she have been the Native American and the story attributed to Philip and Mary Parker actually be Philips parents? I don't know any more than you do,(probably less) but the family who passed on this story moved from Macon County, Tenn. in 1920. They did not read or write, so all information was passed verbally. If the Cherokee is not in this family's heritage, why do you suppose they would admit to it? This does not seem like something people would be deceptive about during the time when it would have been unpopular to be Native American. If Vic and Jenks both thought they were quarter Cherokee, the full-blood would have had to have been not too far up the line from them...as far as great grandmother? Maybe. I have not worked on this line for a long time...it is also my weakest line. Still, I would like to have correct information even if it is not a lot. If you find out anything, please let me know. I would be interested in knowing how many of our cousins through this line have similar stories. I did find Abraham Parker married to Phebe Nichols that could be her father and mother. Both of these folks were from Virginia which shoots down the idea that Mary Parker was full blood Cherokee. 3. That's the same problem I ran into with the initials. I was wondering if one their children was named Martha - possibly the one with the initials M.D. Thanks for your help though. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Larry Oldfield" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, May 01, 2002 8:08 PM Subject: Re: [TNMACON] Owen/Owens > Unfortunately in the 1880 census only intials were given for their children. OWENS, 18 yrs old, female, white, housekeeper, born in TN. (Note: You would have to look VERY closely at the print/spelling of her first name. It appears (to me) to be L u v e r n a.
