Catherin, starting in Red Boiling Springs take Hwy. 80 stay on 80 until you get to Hwy. 262 turn left then You will see a sign that tells you when you get to Willette. The Cemetery is on the left. I also have family buried there. Good Luck Ruth

Ruth, you are welcome and yes, Edmund was the husband of Joanah. He was b. Oct. 12, 1767, d. Dec. 1, 1827 and they are buried in the Dillehay cemetery located top of a hill in the Brooks Hollow in Defeated Creek. That is very interesting about the picture. I have a picture sent to me from a nice person on the Smith Co site of Joanah Dillehay, granddaughter of Edmund & Joanah, through their son, Johnson/Johnston. Would be interesting to see if they look any thing alike. Shirley, Thank you so much for putting the info. on line about Martha Dillehay Smith. I have been searching a long time for this. Was Edmund, Joanah's Husband? My aunt has a picture of a woman named Asher. When I was a small child my grandmother showed me this picture. It is on tin and it was in with her pictures. She told me that she was connected to the family but she didn't know how. She might not be Joanah, But I am going to try to find out. Oh by the way I descend from Elizabeth Joanah Smith Thompson Sutton through her only son. Do you have any info. about her first husband John Thomas Thompson Sr. I can't find anthing except where they married and that he died in the Civil War. Ruth Kirby
If any of the following rings a bell with anyone, please let me know. In 1784 Hannah Oglesby Carr and her children left Washington County Virginia and "coming the great route of that period, by way of Cumberland Gap through Kentucky" came to Tennessee. One of her children was John Carr who wrote "Early Times in Middle Tennesse." Another was her son by Elisha Oglesby, Elisha, Jr., a Revolutionary War soldier buried at Echo in Macon county. After first stopping at Mansker's station, Elisha and his family finally settled at Echo Springs, which is now in Macon county. Elisha first married Mary Bryan(t) and after her death Selah Rogers. He had 17 children: Elizabeth, James, Daniel, Hannah, Nellie, Peggy, Elisha, Wesley, William, John McGee, Frances, Alice, Stephen, Henry, Priscilla, Clifton Allen, and Sally. Daniel (1785-1859) married (1804) Mary White (1788-1865). Their children were John, Elisha, James, Emaline, Rebecca, Archy. Archy (1823-1897) married (1843) Sarilda, Zerilda, Zarella Carr (1824-1894) Their children were: James K P, Daniel Frank, Mary E. John Henry, Emeline, AA, Lee, William, Hetta.
Can someone tell me if the Macon Co, History book has any info on Charles Dixon b. 1864 or James Dixon b. 1859. I just found out that they were buried in Macon Co, and am hoping to pinpoint their earlier locations. They seemed to have moved around a lot. Thanks, Catherine
Tammy, I think someone already answered your question in regards to Joannah Elizabeth and it does agree with the information that I have (James, (Jimmy)Sutton. Martha's mother in case you don't have that was Joanah Asher Dillehay b. Apr. 11, 1778, d. May 11, 1856. There is a very good article in the Smith Co History Book on the Dillehay's and a picture of Edmunds grave on the Smith Co. site. Tina, Thank you & please call me Shirley. W.C.*Wiley Clemons,(Doc)Gregory was my GGrandfather. He lived not far from the church and I can remember the house although it was torn down some years ago and a new one built. He died 1926 and he and his wife Amanda area buried in the McDonald Cemetery in Lafayette. Is there any mention of a John Gregory (W.C's father). His wife was Louisa(Eliza) and seems to be my hard one to find much info listed. I have census records on him from 1860 ,& he died 1895 & buried in the Billy Cothron cemetery. I have information from other researchers but not much can I prove for my self. I don't know where he was in 1850 and so many John Gregory's. Abel & Martha are listed in the Smith Co Cemetery book but it states their graves have been destroyed. Says it was located on E.Fork of Sloan Branch but I do not have any idea where that is. Mrs. Cothron, The article about the church mentions a W. C. Gregory as a clerk in 1901.I have looked up Abel and Martha Dillehay Smith, but I did not find it in this book. Doesn't mean they are not in there connected to another story. It doesn't have a full name index, it has a last name index. I will check the cemetery book and see if they are buried in Macon County. Will let you know what I find. Tina, thank you for the information. Elder E.L. Smith was a son of Abel & Martha Dillehay Smith and brother to my ancestor Thomas. I hope to be in Tn for a couple days in late July, hopefully I can get to the library at Lafayette and take a look at the book. Does the article mention any Gregory's, church or school. I am looking for the following buried in Macon Co. Robert Hunter b. 1837 Viteria Price b. 1862 James Dixon b. 1859 John Dixon b. 1842 Robert Hunter b. 1868 If someone could look up any or all af the above, I would be very grateful. Catherine
Mrs. Cothron, The Macon County Families and Histories book states the early pastors were L.A. Minick, E. L. Smith, J. F. Lambert, and R. B. Davis. It talks about Early Deacons ordained in 1871. The book also has an article about the school. I have been on the Smith Co. site for a few months now. Both mine & my husband's families are from Macon Co.(some starting in Smith). Some of the names are: Cothron, Gregory, Smith, Beasley, Wilburn, Burrow/Burrus, Gifford and of course many others. Truman Gregory was a 2nd cousin and so a lot of my Gregory and Cothron information came from him and of course Br. Cal's column. I have a lot of the "facts, dates, etc. but I really like personal stories that have been passed down. What I am working on now is information on Ebenezer Church & School. That is where my mother's family "Gregory's" all went. If anyone has dates on when the church was started, early preachers, deacons, members and same for the school and of course would LOVE pictures. Thanks in advance for any help and I will gladly share any information that I have as of now. Pat, The Macon County Historical Society website can be found at the following: http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnmchs once there click - "items for sale" then click - "oder form" then you can print it off and order the items you would like from the list. As for the Smith County History book, I don't think they have any more but you can contact the Smith County Historical and Genealogical Society at : P O Box 112 Carthage, TN 37030-0112 Hope this helps, Tina ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, June 21, 2002 8:03 AM Subject: Re: [TNMACON] Macon County History book lookup > Could anyone tell me where you can buy a Macon Co.History book or Smith Co. > History book .These books sound like they have some very good reading > material. > Especially since my familys are from these two areas. > Pat > > > ==== TNMACON Mailing List ==== > Connect to distant cousins! > <a href="http://www.tngennet.org/macon"> VISIT THE MACON COUNTY, TENNESSEE WEBPAGE!</A> > >
