Shirley, My father always told me that he was kin to Sterling Smith, but did't say how. Now I see how, Daddy was a descendent of Abel through Joanna Elizabeth, and Sterling through her brother Thomas. They were cousins several times removed. I knew your grandfather. You said that John Smith bought a Bible at Malcolm's estate sale. I have a John H. Smith as Abel's Grandson. Who was the man you saw in Lafayette who was a grandson of Thomas and Mary. I might know him. This is what the history book has about Malcolm Smith. An arm was extended from East Fork of Goose Creek Church (now Hillsdale) In 1814. Liberty Chruch was organized on November 2, 1822 into an independent church by Elders John Wiseman, Hiram Casey, William Roark, and Malcolm Smith. the church was doubtless gathered through the ministry of Elder Malcolm Smith, Who became her first pastor and served until his death in 1827. The first three pastors were Elder Malcolm Smith, 1822-1827, Elder Daniel Smith 1830-1857, Elder D. W. Smith 1857-1879. I descend from Malcolm, Abel & Martha, Thomas & Mary Ann Piper Smith, their son Luther & Millie Jones Smith then my grandparents Sterling & Bertha Dickens Smith. I don't have the Macon Co. Book but I did know that Malcolm was a preacher from the History of Middle Tn. Baptists which has an article about Malcolm as well as Elder E.L. Smith another son of Abel & Martha. In the Malcolm's estate sale Allen Smith bought a Hymn Book, John Smith a Bible and there were also other books that sold. There is a picture of Thomas & Mary Ann on the Smith Co. site and I met their "grandson" in his 80's about 2 years ago in Lafayette, Tn. He has the original picture. Keep me posted on any new info. Shirley, which one of Abel's children do you descend from? Thanks for for the name of Malcolm's wife. Do you have a copy of the Macon Co Tn. History And Families? if you do read about Liberty Church. If not I will send you the info. it has about Malcolm. He was a Missionary Baptist Minster. I think that in Cal's Column He has Malcolm born in Va. I will look at my family tree and if I am wrong I will let you know. I want to say I am always happy to get to know a new cousin. No matter how many times removed. Ruth, I am a descendant of Malcolm Smith and his son Abel. I know in Malcolm's will he named his wife as Sally but that is all I know. Don't know who, when or where they married or if she is the mother of his children. If she is then they would have married in NC. but I can find very little in Chatham Co. on Malcolm and if his birthdate is correct in some other records then he could not have been born in Chatham as it did not exist at that time. I have also looked at previous counties that formed Chatham but still no luck. I am not related to any Sutton's so can't help on that side. Will be glad to keep you posted if I come up with anything. The connection is thru Rhoda Cliburn, her mother Sary. Rhoda married Elias Atkerson in 1801 in Bedford County, Virginia. Sary was shown on the permission to marry as a resident of Franklin County. Elias and Rhoda migrated to Smith County, Tn about 1810-1811. The 1820 Smith County census shows a Daniel Cliborn family and a John Cliborn family. The 1800 Tax List for Franklin Co. Va. lists a Daniel Cliborn. I cannot tie Rhoda or Sary with either and am searching for information on them. Hope this helps you, and I hope you could possibly have some information on the family you could share with me. I do have information on Chief Quanah Parker and I think he may be related to my Parker family however I have not yet been able to make a direct connection. Sorry I have not been much help. Peggy, Thanks for the note. I have copies of this. My problem is that when my grandfather moved his family to Putnam County, Tennessee, we lost or rather I lost touch of the family that was left in Macon Co. Since the note appear, I have heard from a distant relative that I had never hear of before. This is from my grandfather's sister, gggrandson. Rupert Curtis Nunally
Peggy, Thanks for the note. I have this information. What I am looking for is what happen to the rest of the family, in Macon Co. after my grandfather moved his family to Putnam Co. TN. My grandfather died before I was born. His son, Edgar M. Nunally. wrote an account of the family up to the move. As a result of my E-mail, I have heard from my grandfather's sister g-g-grand son. For the first time, me told me that they called Curtis , "Curt." I am named after my great-grandfather Curtis. Thanks for your note. Rupert Curtis Nunally. ( Note grandfather changed the spelling of our last name.)
