The details surrounding his birth are a complicated story, but I am trying to sort everything out. My grandfather, William Vernon Smith, passed away in 1996. His death certificate states his place of birth as Loudon County, TN, although some family members belive he was born in Jamestown, TN. His mother's name was Ada and it is known that she had a sister named Winnie (this information comes from a photo taken when my grandfather was about 12 months old.) He was later "adopted" by Courtland and Lora Smith. In 1920, Courtland and Lora Smith lived in Chattanooga, with a 6 year old Vernon W. Morgan as their "boarder." Courtland Smith was killed in an accident of some nature during the dedication ceremony of the Market Street Bridge in Chattanooga, around 1921. Lora Smith returned to Wisconsin, taking Vernon with her. Once she arrived in Wisconsin, Vernon was placed in a Catholic orphanage in Oshkosh, WI. There is some talk in the family that Lora Smith was my grandfather's aunt (perhap's on his father's side of the family). When he was eighteen, my grandfather returned to the south, living in Ringgold, GA, until his death in 1996. If anyone has any information that would be helpful, I would be most grateful.
