I heard that rootsweb was having problems. But does this mean that the Loudon-L is off line. I have not gotten any mail from Loudon-L for almost two weeks. What is the problem Rosalind
Sandy, I would love to have a copy of the picture -- I have lots of ancestors from Loudon and would like to find out if any of them are in it. You probably don't have the names of the children, do you? Thank you. Is anyone familar with Cave College? It may have been located near the Charles H. Bacon Farm on Vonore Road and moved to Burton Mill and renamed Burton Mill School. There was a picture in the 1970 Loudon County Centennial Edition of the newspaper that was taken around 1917 or 18 when it was Burton Mill School and a frame structure. Anyway, I have a picture of 30-35 children and their teacher that is taken in front of a log structure. On the back it say "Cave College School, teacher Albert Moore" and "Almeda Lomax and Zoe Lomax". Zoe was the second wife of my husbands grandfather Claude Fine and Almeda was her sister. I don't know when the picture was taken but Zoe was born in 1896 and I would estimate it being taken about 1905-1910. If anyone has any connections to the school or Mr. Moore during this time, I will be happy to scan the picture and email a copy. Sandy (Liles) Fine Lenoir City, TN

This is my first time to write I am looking for information about several of my ancestors who lived or were buried in Loudon Co. These two Daniel D. Kelly(Kelley) and his wifie Susan Sullivan Pratt.moved to Tn from Virginia. They show up on the TN census in1830, then in 1840 they show up in Roane Co., in 1850 Monroe Co., in 1870 back to Roane, in 1880 finally in Loudon Co. At this time they were in their 70's. They were farmers, I think. They are both buried in Roberson Cemetary near Philadelphia on the Loudon side. This is the old portion of the cemetary. My gggrandfather Daniel passed in July 1880 and my gggrandmother Susan passed in Dec. 1890. Has anyone heard of a farm area known as "Head of the Creek". This is where my ggrandmother Perlina (Kelly) Shelton and her husband Andrew Shelton lived. Perlina is a daughter of Daniel and Susan Kelly. It is located "about a mile out of Philadephia, TN on the Loudon Side" per Annie L. Young. It is possible that this is where Daniel and Susan lived or close to it. I was in contact with a man at the Karnes Funeral Home but he did not have any records that far back. Any information would be appreciated Rosalind Kelly Sherman (msarahroz@aol.com)
I am planning to go to the Loudon County Library today, if it is open. I live about an hour away and was there one day last week, but it didn't open until 2pm. Does anyone have the schedule? Also, any advice on research methods and materials while I am there -- don't want to miss anything. I have lots of ancestors from Loudon. Thanks for any help. Ann
I recently discovered Fooshee Cemetery, where many of my BRACKETT ancestors are buried. I think it's the most beautiful cemetery I've seen -- so peaceful and scenic. I'd like to know how to contact the owners and/or caretakers. Does anyone have this information? My ggrandfather Thomas Brackett, who served in the civil war, has no dates on his stone; and I would like to have them added. I would also like any information they have on his parents. Thank you. Ann

Hi Charlie, I've always heard that everybody in this town is related to everybody else and I am beginning to believe it. Is the Mead DAR marker located at Eaton and North Middle School? I just got a reply from my cousin (a descendent of John Luttrell and Amanda (Liles) Mead). Her John Luttrell is the son of William and Polly (Luttrell) Mead. Dave, do you know if this William is a brother of Jason Mead and a son of Rev. Soldier William Mead? Sandy Fine
Muddy Creek is a real place in Loudon County. It is generally known today as MARTEL. William Meade may have lived in Muddy Creek at one time, but he died near Eatons Crossroads. His cemetery has long ago been covered over and farmed for years, and a Grammar school and a middle school have been built on the spot . About 5 years ago, a descendant of his, HARTZEL STEPHENS of Texas and some other relatives, along with the local DAR marked a spot that was agreeable with the school and placed a stone in their memory. I photographed the proceedings and my wife was Regent of the DAR chapter. If I can find the pictures, I will send you one, but don't be in a hurry about it. Right now I don't know where they are. You could write Hartzell and he can tell you everything. He is the most dedicated genealogist I ever met and loves to spread it around. Dave, I'm not sure if the John Luttrell Meads are the same or not. John Luttrell Mead and Amanda Liles married in Roane County on August 18, 1851 and moved to Missouri where Amanda died in 1881. Amanda was born on January 10, 1834 and there was a 16 year old John Mead and 65 year old Elizabeth Luttrell living with John and Sarah McReynolds in 1850 Roane Co,TN Census. I'm not sure of exact relationship but John W. McReynolds married Melinda M. Luttrell on Oct 15, 1845 and Melinda evidently died young because a John W. McReynold married Sarah Luttrell on August 31, 1848. Other Meads and Luttrells married: William O. Mead married Polly B. Luttrell on Nov 21, 1833 and Jason Mead married Lind Luttrell on Feb 15, 1838 (Both in Roane Co) There were at least three Mead families on the 1830 Roane Co Census. William, William M. and John Mead. >From article in 1970 Centennial Edition of Loudon/Lenoir City paper. "And so, the Martel United Methodist Church, know historically as the Muddy Creek Methodist Episcopal Church, is proud to trace its history, back to the early days of Methodism in Tennessee." There is an online listing for Martel Cemetery located at http://user.icx.net/~websterl/loudon_cem/martel_umc_cem.html Also from the article..."The community and meeting house evidently drew their name from that of Muddy Creek which runs through the community and eventually empties into the Tennessee River at present-day Lenoir City. How the creek itself earned its name however, raises some question for the stream is crystal clear except in times of heavy rain or flood. Tradition holds that beavers once damed the stream and caused it to appear muddy. Another suggestion holds that perhaps the muddy banks gave it the quaint name of Muddy Creek." The article was based on a booklet published in 1962 "Martel Methodist Church 1795-1962" compiled primarily and written by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Duff. I am interested in the Mead family because of their connection with the Liles and the Luttrell families. 1. Amanda Liles, John Luttrell Mead's wife, is the daughter of my gg-grandfather James Liles. 2. Annie Scarbrough and Ollie B. Scarbrough, both daughters of my g-grandparents, James Monroe and Martha J. (Cook) Scarbrough married a Sam Luttrell. 3. Edward Ross Fine and Fannie Fine, son and daughter of my husbands g-grandfather Dan and Mary Jane (Greer) Fine married Luttrells. Edward Ross married Katherine Luttrell and Fannie Fine married Fate Luttrell. Katherine and Fate's parents are John and Margaret (Johnson) Luttrell. My husband's g-grandparents are also buried at Martel Cemetery. It is about a mile from where I live and there are some unmarked graves. According to the newspaper article a lot of the old records were lost. Sandy (Liles) Fine
My gggrandfather's name was Tobais Black TUCK of Greenback, Tennessee (now in Loudon County, which use to be part of Blount County). He went by the name "Toby". He was born on December 9, 1847 and married Sarah Ann BRIGHT on December 17, 1871. He died January 24, 1922. Does anyone know the parents and/or siblings of Tobais as well as Sarah? Any information would be helpful.
Hi all, A friend trying to do me a favor, gave me a note she said had burial info on an ancestor. It simply said "Mead, William, Muddy Creek, Loudon County". To date I have no idea what this means, nor did she write down where she found it. Is Muddy Creek a cemetery? Does that mean he is buried near a creek of that name? William Mead was a veteran of the Revolutionary War and came to Eatons Crossroads, Roane County (present day Loudon), about 1800. He died in 1831. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave
I have an almost total lack of information on the family of Robert Eaton Findley, below. I think I know his parents names but I am not sure of that. An elderly cousin told me she thought he came to Fentress County from Louden County shortly before his marriage in 1882. I live in upstate NY and am a long way from relevant census data, but past study had not been very rewarding. Does anyone have access to marriage records for 1894? Looking for George Washington Vinson (b. 15Mar1851 d.12Dec1894) m. Nancy Ann Brackett 5Mar1894, (my grandparents) probably in Loudon County. I'm also wondering if this was a second marriage. I have searched and searched to find something about him, especially who his parents were, but to no avail. I have all of the descendants listed in the family Bible if anyone is interested. Any info will be a great help! Thanks! Ann
