Has anyone posted the information that Ancestry.com has messed up the 1820 census for Lincoln County? I found this yesterday when I was working on that census. Apparently Ancestry has all of the Lincoln County 1820 census listed under Jackson County (I have no idea where they have put the Jackson County entries!). I reported the error yesterday, but the change will not be made soon as it requires them to "take down the whole 1820 census database." I realize it requires that, but they can make the changes to their backup file and replace it fairly quickly I would assume. However, until such time as that is done, if you want to look for someone in Lincoln County in 1820 census you will need to look in Jackson County. This is ONLY in Ancestry's online database - all other sources I've ever seen have it right.
Yes, Ancestry seems to have filed the Lincoln County census under Jackson County. Knowing some of my ancestors who were living in Lincoln County in 1820, do not appear in Ancestry, I rushed to Jackson County to look for them. Unfortunately, they are not in the Jackson County version either. The Lincoln County 1820 Census has up to now been found under Lincoln County in Ancestry. It would appear that the recent "improvements" in the census records have moved the Lincoln County folks to Jackson County. Please be advised, there is a section of Lincoln County that is actually missing. How much is missing, I am not sure, but based on my own research, the residents of almost the entire length of Dukes Creek are not in the census. Edward Teel owned property at the junction of Elk River and Dukes Creek, near Kelso. He is in the census, but none of the other people who owned land on Dukes Creek and lived there in 1820, are in the census. So there still is a chunk of Lincoln County that is missing. I notified Ancestry months ago when we were struggling with this issue before. Guess they won't take our words for it. Even when the upper left margin of each page is clearly marked Lincoln ct. All thingas come to those who wait. i don't know 'bout ya'll, but I'm getting a lot older while waiting. > Date: Tue, 13 Apr 2010 13:07:38 -0500 > From: claxtonm@beasleywireless.net > To: TNLINCOL@rootsweb.com > Subject: [TNLINCOL] 1820 Census at Ancestry > > Has anyone posted the information that Ancestry.com has messed up the > 1820 census for Lincoln County? We Lawrence Co., IN researchers complained to Ancestry for years because they had put Lawrence Co., IN in with LaGrange Co., IN on the 1840 census even though the pages clearly said Lawrence Co. They finally fixed it a few months ago! My ancestor, Robert C. MOBERLY, was on that census, but on the 1830 census he was in LINCOLN. CO, TN. He had unclaimed mail at the Fayetteville post office in Jul 1826. These are the only 2 records I have ever been able to locate concerning him in Lincoln Co., TN. If anyone ever finds out anything about him, please let me know!!! He has been a "brick wall" for 10 years!!!
