    1. [TNLINCOL] George W. Stewman
    2. James L. Danley
    3. Dear List, In the "Cemetery Records of Lincoln-Moore Counties, Tennessee," by Helen & Timothy Marsh, on pg. 156 (Rose Hill Cemetery) is a GEORGE W. STEWMAN (b. Jun 1851; d. 4 Jan 1920) and his wife, ELLA STEWMAN ("Died May 1870," "Age: (not given)"). Buried on one side of this couple is George W. Stewman's son, Robert L. Stewman (b. 12 Mar 1894; d. 15 Jun 1962). Buried on the other side of this couple is presumed to be another son, J. D. Stewman (b. 1899; d. 1944). A couple of headstones away is George W. Stewman's daughter, JOSIE STEWMAN SHELTON (b. 10 Oct 1897; d. 16 Oct 1957) along with her husband, Lonnie Rufus Shelton (b. 14 Feb 1892; d. 16 Apr 1964). I believe this GEORGE W. STEWMAN to be the son of Reuben W. Stewman & Leah Jane Scivally. In the 1860 LCT census (Stuman, Rubin household), GEORGE is listed as 10 years old. In the 1870 LCT census--enumerated on 21 June 1870--G. W. STEWMAN is listed as 20 years old, with his wife, R. A. (age 18) in household #81-81. Household 80-80 is R(euben) W. Stewman & L(eah) J(ane). The Franklin Co., TN marriage record has STEWMAN, GEO. W. to RUTHA A. TIPPS on 14 Jul 1869--no return. I have been unable to locate GEORGE W. STEWMAN in the 1880 census. However, in the 1900 Moore Co., TN census is the following household (208/208): Stewman, George W. Head June 1850 49 M TN TN TN (Married 29 years) Laura L. Wife May 1870 30 F TN TN TN (Married 29 years ???) 5 children / 4 living William A. Son Nov 1886 13 M TN TN TN Henry C. Son Dec 1890 9 M TN TN TN Robert L. Son Mar 1893 7 M TN TN TN Josie C. Dau Oct 1896 3 F TN TN TN John W. Son Apr 1900 1/12 M TN TN TN Are all of these GEORGE W. STEWMANs the same person? If so, then it would appear that he married: 1. Ella _____ who died May 1870. (OR COULD THIS ACTUALLY be a daughter buried with her father?) 2. Rutha A. Tipps, license dated 14 Jul 1869. BUT THERE IS NO RETURN, so she probably married immediate following the death of Ella _____ . Rutha A. Tipps is listed as George W. Stewman's wife on 21 Jun 1870. 3. Laura L. _____, who is only 30 years old in the 1900 Moore Co., TN census is listed as having 5 children, with only 4 living. However FIVE children are listed. Therefore, the eldest son, William A. Stewman, is likely not hers but Rutha A. Tipps' son; and another child died before 1900. (HOWEVER Rutha A. Tipps going 18 years without a child to then have one in 1886 really doesn't seem likely.) Speaking of WILLIAM A. STEWMAN, there is an ARTHUR W. STEWMAN who married Emily B. "Emma" Eslick. I have yet to locate their marriage record. However they are buried in the Champ-Ward Cemetery (pg. 287 of the "Cemetery Records of Lincoln-Moore Counties, Tennessee"). They are listed as: Arthur W. Stewman 1886-1963 & Emma E. Stewman 1888-1955 Arthur W. Stewmans' birth year (1886) matches the birth year of William A. Stewman (Nov 1886) in GEORGE W. STEWMAN's household in the 1900 Moore Co., TN census. I suspect that Arthur W. Stewman and William A. Stewman are the same person. Is anyone researching this family? Would anyone have any idea as to whether there really is only the one GEORGE W. STEWMAN who married three times? Are Arthur W. Stewman and William A. Stewman the same person? And who really is his mother? Are J. D. Stewman (b. 1899) and John W. Stewman (b. Apr 1900) the same person? Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. James L. Danley Vista, CA jldanley@sbcglobal.net
