    3. Hi everyone. The Cemeteries of Madison County, AL books, Vol. I and Vol. II are still available for purchase. Dot Scott Johnson and her crew spent nine hard years, going to all the cemeteries they could find, to do Volume One which has 377 numbered pages. I have no idea how many years it took to do Volume Two which contains 371 numbered pages. They did a lot of climbing, crawling, hiking and walking through pastures, bushes, over and under fences, fighting off snakes, cattle, dogs, ticks and chiggers. And yes, a lot of landowners thought they owned the cemeteries on their land and refused to let them through. I do think the nicest thing anyone could possible do would be to email Dot and ask her to give you the cost and availability of her cemetery books. Her email address is dsjohnso@HIWAAY.net Thanks Dot and everyone involved for doing the Cemeteries of Madison County, AL!!! Sure saved us a lot of travel and hard work. When we started doing research about 30 years ago we started buying every book possible on the areas we were researching and guess what? Today we have to do very little traveling to find what we need. Yes, that's correct, we have our own genealogy library of sorts right here in our home. All we have to do is go to the shelf and take the book down and search. Everyone in the area you are searching are related to each other or were the neighbors for many, many years. There are so many people buried without a marker and can't be found. Markers were very expensive and money was hard to come by, and sometimes the place where the markers were made was so many miles away that transportation was impossible. Sometimes a death certificate or bible records will tell you what you need to know. There are many shortcuts you can take and buying the book that has your information in it is the best shortcut I know about.
