    3. The Introduction to the booklet I typed from states; When NC gave up her claim to TN, the Secretary of State of the U.S. requested a list of lands that had been granted in that territory so the rights of ownership could be protected. Microfilm # 68 Roll # 1, is a microfilm copy of this report as it was reported to the Pres Thomas Jefferson. The original from NC had not been found. There is also a note that 2,275 more warrants had been issued to officers and soldiers of the Continental Line for which grants had not yet been made. [Note how early my pages were dated-Ginny] From Goodspeed's History of TN- 1887- the following information was given on the grants. A soldier received 640 acres; non-commissioned officers received 1000 acres; Captains received 3, 840 acres; Majors received 4,800 acres; Lt. Col received 5,760 acres. Lt Col Commandant 7,200 acres; Col. 7,200 acres; Brig. Gen 12,000 acres; Chaplin rec. 6,200 acres; Surgeons Mate rec. 2, 560 acres; Heirs of any soldier who had fallen in the defense of his country received the full amount of his grant. Any family that had previously moved into the area reserved for grants was given a grant of 640 acres. Nothing indicated that residence was required to receive a grant, therefore, it is probable grants were given to many people who never were residents of TN. There were also many people who lived in TN but received the title to their property in some other manner and do not appear of this list. [purchases or other land acts]. My Rev War soldier and many of his neighbors arrived ca 1818-1820 in LCT. I wonder if there was a grant later for them to claim land there? Seems odd so many came from NC at the same time as my Rowan/Stokes Co White family did to LCT. Ginny
