Allie David Clem must have really liked Hastings women. He especially liked the daughters and granddaughter of his cousin, Thomas David Hastings. Allie first two, possibly three, wives were Tom's daughters. Allie's first wife was Mary Ann "Mollie" Hastings. She died without issue soon after they were married ca 1894-1895. For a brief time, Allie may have been married to another of Tom's daughters Bertha Hastings. If so, Bertha died without issue. Allie's next wife (possibly his third), was Mollie's sister, Mattie Ada Hastings. Allie and Ada had two children. They were Jessie Lou Clem, who married Albert McClung, and Harry Lee Clem who married Virgie Stanford. Ada Hastings Clem died in 1905. On her death bed, she begged Allie not to marry her half-niece, Lucy Bailey. Ada did not want Lucy to be her children's step-mother. Lucy spent a great deal of her youth in the Thomas D. Hastings household. Several of Lucy's half-aunts and half-uncles considered Lucy to be a "spoiled brat". Lucy was the same age as some of her half-aunts and half-uncles, but she was excused from chores because she was one of Tom's grandchildren and not one of his children. Lucy enjoyed her status in the Thomas David Hastings household and loved to taunt her half-aunts and half-uncles while they did their chores. When Ada got sick, Lucy told everyone that when Ada died she intended to marry Allie. Not Surprisingly, Allie did marry Lucy. They lived most of their married life in Limestone County. They had five children. Some of Allie's and Lucy's descendants supposedly lived in Lincoln County. Allie's and Lucy's children were 1. Clarence William Clem born 1905 died in Bolivar, MS; his remains may be interred in Limestone County, AL. 2. Aileen Clem born 1911 - married ? I'm told she's dead - persons interviewed couldn't recall much about her except she may have lived in Lincoln County or in Giles County. 3. Alma Clem born 1915 - married ? - I'm told she's dead - persons interviewed couldn't recall much about her except she may have lived in Lincoln County or in Giles County. 4. James Melvin Clem born 5-9-1916 - died LCA (Elkmont?) 3-7-1988. James Melvin Clem and/or his children may have lived in Lincoln County or in Giles County. 5. Robert Vernon Clem born 1920 - died several years ago. Some of Robert's descendants supposedly live in Lincoln County but may live in Giles County. Allie's children by Ada were not fond of their step-mother and, consequently, they were not fond of their half-siblings. As they grew up they lost contact with them and had little information about them. Anyone having knowledge of any members of this family, please contact me.
