    1. [LCT] Naming Traditions
    2. I have been trying every way I can think of to connect Martha E. Gray of TN, who married James Nathaniel Davis in Cape Girardeau County, MO, 1861, with the Martha E. Gray, dau. of Burgess & Elizabeth Gray of LCT. Both Marthas were born in 1841. I am puzzled by the names of Martha Gray Davis' six children - not one has a name I recognize from those of the Burgess & Elizabeth line. Is this an indication that they are not the same person? One or two children I could understand, if the remaining 4 had names I recognize, but they don't. Can someone tell me if they have found this to be true in their line; maybe it's more common than I thought. In researching the Grays from back in NC and even VA, I find brothers who all have children with the same names, making it difficult to determine who belongs to who (there should be a "whom" in there I'm sure). Thanks for any advice you have. Martha

    3. What are the names? Could they be from the husbands family names? Eventually, the naming of children after family members did stop. 2. From the Burgess Gray line, there are (m) Thomas, Hugh, James, Robert; (f) Elizabeth, Nancy, Ellen, Mary A. Polly, Isabelle(a). From the MO line: (m) Edwin Franklin; Ralph; (f) Clara Josephine, Mary Emma, Avee Ann, Ida, and so on. The only match I've ever know (outside Elizabeth which is pretty common to all lines), is that my ggrandmother is Clara Jo, and her dau., my aunt, is Clara Isabelle. Maybe it's not a such a big thing, but the only connection between Martha Elizabeth Gray Davis in MO and Martha E. Gray in LCT, is the year of birth, 1841, and the state of TN. Other M. E. Grays in TN for the 1850/1860 census years have a different birth date. Also, the parents of both Martha E.'s are born in NC. On the one hand I want to accept that these are the same person. On the other, I am getting engrossed into researching the LCT connection and back into NC and VA, but I don't want to expend further effort (to say nothing about getting attached to these people) until I can be nearly sure I am researching my own family line. 2. Most of my family lines (Protestants) from NC had, by ca 1830's, stopped naming most of their children after relatives. I've completed extensive lines on most of my families and find that the naming patterns that so many people think to be prevalent in some families just weren't applicable to most of my southern family lines. In my family lines if there were 7-9 kids in a family, only one or two of them might be named after a relative. Ruth

    2. Well I hope you're right because I've grown attached to Burgess and his line. I'm the oldest of 8, and we are all named for at least one relative, although my mother would insist she named us after the saint and not the relative!
