    2. Based on census records, a great many people from LCT had children born in Illinois during the war years. Hopefully, someone on the list can shed some light on this. Sonja Bedwell smbedwell@aol.com

    3. We often assume if our ancestors were from the south, they were Confederate. I have been surprized at how many - and it seems especially in Tennessee - chose to be Union. This meant they had to often moved their families north - at least for the war years. Later many of them would move back into the south but perhaps to a different area. I know some of Eastern TN was Union, and the area around border of Carroll and Benton Co TN (my ancestors were in 7th CAV USA and a lot of that unit were captured and sent to Andersonville where they were prisoners along side their brothers and cousins who had moved to Illinois in 1850s and joined Union unit from there and also captured). This Benton Co TN group, they were all originally from NC and usually Methodist if that means anything. I don't know about Lincoln Co - if there were any Union people in that area or not....but I know a section of Northern Alabama had Union people (think of Looney's Tavern). Of course border states such as Kentucky, and Missouri had both CSA and USA as did Arkansas (they had a Peace Society).....and Maryland while it stayed in the Union had many Confederates there.....North Carolina also had pockets of Union people.....it seems to me that usually where you had mountains the people there tended to be ones who stayed with the Union, perhaps because of their types of farming they did not have as many slaves? I am not sure why.....it just seems that way to me. The mountain section of Virginia became West VA because they wanted to stay in the Union. Anyway, if you chose Union, your family might be in a bad situation staying at home, and a move to a new location would be in order.
