I have to say, reading this gave me a laugh....it sounds so much like me trying to explain my families to another person. What it boils down to, is always check the neighbors on census and land records. They either are relatives, or will eventually marry into the family, or....they travel the same migration route sometimes for several generations. The connections became a real cat's cradle... One man told me his family tree was a circle and I am beginning to think that about mine. For example - I am not a Davis, but some of them married into various parts of my family. I am trying to see if Davis in LCT and Lawrence Co TN, are connected to the ones in Jackson Co TN....and I know some from LCT moved along with Turneys to Boone Co Arkansas. Then next, what if any is connection to Hawkins and Linn/Lynn families? So I have the same problem you do. But I can take some of these family names back to ca 1750s and the valley of Virginia around Woodstock / Edinburg area. That really makes me scratch my head, then on to Clinch/Holston area (just getting into TN) and on from there. I find them at King's Mountain in 1780, again in War of 1812....and so on.
