I thought they hung you for stealing a horse.....one of my Turneys in 1790s "stole" 3 bee hives and was sentenced to hang by the neck till "dead, dead, dead". I knew something had happened since the man was alive till well into the 1850s......he was also listed in early 1790s as constable of Smith Co Tn, his uncle was one of the magistrates....anyway, the family story was that a man owed him some money and would not pay, he and his brother-in-law went to collect the money, the man was gone from home so they took 3 bee hives as payment. Due to politics......he was sent to court and sentenced to hang, then was released. I have just found two letters in Gov. Sevier's papers that have to due with this, men asking the governor to release Jacob Turney. I am going to send for copies to see exactly what they had to say. Anyway, perhaps this Moore also stole the mare as a payment for a debt or something. The tidbit on Jessee came from a LCT site. It just helped establish date of birth for this Jessee.
