According to research I've done into Familial Mediterranean Fever, it is carried thru Armenians, Turks, and non-Ashkenazi Jews (Sephardic). The Sephardic Jews were driven out of their region centuries ago, many migrating thru Germany, etc. Allegedly, the "Black Dutch", as many families called themselves, derived this name from the German Black Forest...could these people have given up their religion b/c of persecution. It wouldn't be the first time. I have 1 Warren cousin who was genetically tested for this - so could it be? George, this is a bit "off subject" in a sense, but family history is not just about dates and names. Any input out there? I think you are totally correct! In fact, this is the sort of thing that really fascinates me..I want to know what my ancestors' lives were like and not just when and where they lived. I want to know about their religion, their politics, their jobs, their personalities....It's such an adventure. Tammie, hoping to get down to Lincoln County on spring break:) > George, this is a bit "off subject" in a sense, but family history is not just > about dates and names. > Any input out there? Joy

Joy, I think our Warrens may have had a little Cherokee. According to research being done on the illness, it has been found to be passed through lines of Cherokee families. The researcher has a theory they may have interbred with the Spanish when they first came over and the illness was passed through them. Many Spanish explorers were Sephardic converts to Christianity and came over to this country. The study looked at Applachia families because there is a higher rate of the illness there than elsewhere in the country. They researched the genealogy and found no Jews, but did find every family had Cherokee. Daniel Warren came from NC where there were still plenty of Cherokees in his day. I have seen it stated several places that he may have just worn the Warren name. I keep wondering if perhaps he had Cherokee in his line somewhere and that is the source. My Grandmother on the other side of my family was Cherokee, so there is no mystery on that side. Her mother was 3/4 and my aunts and uncles have Indian cards. The illness has to be on both sides and I can find no link on my LCT side. The Warrens are my best guess since you also have the illness. I think genetic illness can provide interesting genealogical clues to our past and are as valid as DNA to be discussed on the site. Michaele, I got the idea of the Sephardic thru the Warren's from the fact that our Warren's (my family) always said they were "Black Dutch". Studying that term, you know it can refer to folks from the Black Forest region of Germany. And, like you say, there may or probably is some Indian in there somewhere. Most of my family, while not always dark, gets very tanned very easily. And, while in Siskin, my doctor there actually went home and researched FMF, the Melungeons, etc. (I think you were referring to the Melungeons when you said the Appalachia??). It's fascinating to me, not only to find my family, but to try to track this disease. I've seriously considered the genetic route. Perhaps we need to start a Warren DNA project?? hahaha. The term Melegun is referred to for the following Native Americans who married African Americans and Native Americans that married White people or Native American who married African American. Walter Plecker of Virginia used this term to describe the people above. He was the first vital records clerk of Virginia. Walter Plecker made a list of surnames he considered to be Melugeons. If you want to know about Melugeon's here are a few links. http://www.multiracial.com/letters/plecker2.html http://www.multiracial.com/letters/moore.html This link he mentions TN and letter Mr. Plecker wrote to the Secretary of State of TN Read and judge for yourself. My RAMSEY and WARE surnames are on his list. Which means they married either an African American or a Native American not sure which. My WARE and RAMSEY are from VA.
