Thanks Ginny, The book I got my info on this family had this listed as Jessee. Looking at the census page, it looks like John, but I believe it is Jessee. Old script with 2 "s" was written that way. Well, on Ancestry.com it is very clear and spelled JOHN. I do not know. I will try to find him on 1850 and 1870 to verify this family is headed by a John.

Hey Ginny, Zoom in on ancestry.com and take a close look. A researcher for a library showed me the old script for 2 "s" was written that way. I am not trying to argue with you on this point.... I just want to be correct. On the 1850 census, the head is listed as Jesse. Here is an interesting tidbit on a Jessee Moore that lived in LCT. Jessee Moore was convicted of stealing a mare in the March term of 1836 in Lincoln County, Tennessee. Was received at the pen, April 6 1836. Sentenced to 3 years imprisonment. Born in South Carolina, Laurens District. No height given, weighs 160 lbs., blue eyes, dark hair, sandy beard, small slim now, upper teeth broken, head stoops forward a little, several moles on chest, scar near left knee, 42 years old. Says he has a wife and 9 children living in Lincoln County, TN on Alexander Gray's land near the Flint River. His mother, 2 brothers and 2 sisters live in Lawrence District, Laurens County, SC. Two sisters married and living in Jackson County, Alabama, on to Jerry Collins and the other to Thomas Scurlock. Discharged by order of the governor on 7 May 1839. Conduct generally good. There is a Jesse Moore listed on the 1820,1830, and 1840 census for LCT. The one listed above would have been born about 1794. The Jessee or John that we are looking at was born about 1803 or 4. I know several people researching the Moore's, of which one is studying a Jesse Moore who went to KY and on to IL. These notes probably relate somehow to his line.
