I have been with Ancestry since it started and have seen many improvement over the years. I have also sent info to them when I have found a problem. It may take a while but they always seem to correct it. The new version was a little different at first and I was more comfortable with the older view but progress moves on so I have adapted to the newer view. I find that the valuable information that I get from Ancestry far outweighs the problems and will continue my subscription. -----Original Message----- From: tnlincol-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:tnlincol-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Dee H. I have been with ancestry since its inception so although improvements can be made I like it. The enhanced viewer is great. This is exactly what I had to do-- you may also need to check your internet browser settings and make ancestry.com a "trusted site" under security settings in order to download files from them. su3mk13@sbcglobal.net ________________________________ From: Marleen Van Horne <msvnhrn@jps.net> To: tnlincol@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, October 24, 2009 10:07:35 AM Subject: [TNLINCOL] Downloading images from Ancestry I download a lot of images from Ancestry, this is how I do it, perhaps it will be of use to the rest of you. I am using Windows Vista and the latest Firefox browser. A while back, there was a problem using Firefox, but that has been corrected. You do need to download the viewer from Ancestry. This has never caused a problem on my computer. During the problem with Firefox, the viewer did not download, but it did no harm to my computer. I have created a folder called Downloads. Initally, I downloaded everything there, but it got so big, that I recently broke it up by making subfolders for each surname. I also have a Miscellaneous folder, because I often look up census records for others. When I want to save an Ancestry census record, I click SAVE on the Ancestry page. In the next window, I click SAVE TO MY COMPUTER and CONTINUE. This brings up a Save Box from Vista. I click through the folders on my computer until I find the DOWNLOAD folder, and the folder for the surname I am researching. When I have the right folder, I name the file as follows: Year State_County Name of Head of Househould It looks like this: 1930 CA_LosAngeles Roscoe Montgomery Van Horne That way I can always find what I am looking for. Once the file is named, I click SAVE. Hint: The files you cannot find are probably under USERS>YOUR NAME>TEMP. When I was not able to use Firefox, that was where the images were saved to. I then had to move them to my download files. You can do this by clicking of the MS symbol on the bottom of the screen. Then click on Computer. This brings up a tree of your folders and files. Click to the one where the image was placed. Then open another COMPUTER window and click to the folder where you want to save the image. You can DRAG and DROP it from one screen to the other, or you can do a Control-X and a Control V. I hope this is clear enough. While we're on the subject of Ancestry.com, is anyone else also having a problem downloading and saving images from there sight? I have Windows Vista. I download an image, then cannot find it in the file that I downloaded it to. If I try to download the image again, it asks me if I want to delete the previous copy (which I never saw). ----- Original Message ----- From: <tnlincol-request@rootsweb.com> To: <tnlincol@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, October 24, 2009 3:02 AM Subject: TNLINCOL Digest, Vol 4, Issue 161 > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Julia, Dickson, Franklin, Jackson, Lawrence and Lincoln County are all on roll # 123 in 1820 so maybe that has something to do with it. I know nothing about ancestry. For years the Lawrence Co., IN census for 1840 has been indexed with Lagrange Co., IN. Lawrence Co. had no inhabitants listed on Ancestry. A bunch of us on the Lawrence Co. mailing list decided a couple of years ago that we would all write to them at the same time about the problem. End result: Ancestry removed Lawrence Co. from the list of counties in Indiana on the 1840 census as if it did not exist!!! The inhabitants of Lawrence Co. are still indexed at Ancestry as having been enumerated in Lagrange Co.! Funny thing, the local library manages to get it right! Thanks to all that responded to my question if others on this list where having trouble with Ancestry. I not only do not like their new look but I had to threaten that I would cancel my membership if they did not give me back my old home page which they had changed some months back. I have done that a couple of times and have been successful. I would hate to cancel for I do depend on them and have found so many books there with info that I need. But it has been one thing after another. With their new look and changes they made they want me to up grade my browser. Not long after I got my new computer MSN did automatically upgraded my browser & I lost the use of my scanner and could not access the internet. I had to take my computer back a day. Same thing happened when I tried to upgrade on the Ancestry site. Another problem. I ordered their new 2009 Family Tree Maker but gave it away for it was just too confusing for me. In all cases they want the customer to let them send all this info to you but it takes hours to go through & it is all wrong. I am going to write Ancestry back and include all of your feed back (without using anyone's name). If that does not work then I believe that writing to CEO Timothy Sullivan is not a bad idea. Thank you all again, I knew I could count on the people on this list. I thought if you all understood my problems then it was Ancestry's fault and not my inability in communicating my problems. Julia
