I want to extend a special THANK YOU to Jenny Buckner-Sides, Ginny Keefer, Hilda Anderson and Julia Molitz for all the information that you sent regarding the STEWMAN family. My questions were answered and I now have new clues regarding links to other families. Jim Danley Vista, CA jldanley@sbcglobal.net

The Heritage of Moore County, TN 1871- 2004. Article # 754 on book page 302 George Washington Stewman He was born June 17, 1851 in Lois, TN to Rueben Wilson Stewman and wife, Laura Jan Scivally. George married Ruth A. Tipps on July 14, 1869 in Fayetteville, LCT. In 1870, he was a farmer in Lynchburg, TN. He and Ruth A. were the parents of six children: 1. Arthur W. who married Emma Eslick 2. Charlie 3. Lena 4. Donie who married John Edgeman 5. Alice who married George W. Fears 6. Ella who married J.W. Wise *** Ruth A. [Tipps] Stewman passed away, date unknown, and George married Laura Louella Darnell, [daughter of William [Darnell on Jan. 1, 1890 in Moore Co TN. They were the parents of nine children, all born in TN; 1. Henry Calvin Stewman who married Mollie Noles 2. Robert Logan who married 1st Sallie Shelton, 2nd to Lucy Aldie Rees. 3. Jimmie born June 2, 1894 in Lois, TN 4. Josephine who married Lonnie Rufus Shelton 5. Jeff Davis who married Mary Rees, sister of Lucy Aldis Rees. 6. John Wesley who married Beulah Mae Goosby 7. George Fulton who married Ivie Tucker 8. Ola Bessie who married Floyd David Thompson 9. Mary Agnes Mae who married 1st Houston Ventress, 2nd Hugh Towery, 3rd Ernest Buford Barnes ** George Washington Stewman worked at Jack Daniels Brewery in the early 1900's. George was also a member of the Ferris Creek Lodge , No 509 in Lynchburg. He remained a member in good standing until his death on Jan. 4, 1920. He is buried in Rose Hill Cem. in Fayetteville. Laura [Darnell] Stewman died Oct. 27, 1937 beside her husband. ** George Washington Stewman and his wife, Laura, have a grandson. Awlton Stewman living in Lynchburg. He is the son of George Fulton Stewman and Ivie Tucker. Awlton is married to Doris Smith. Awlton worked a while for the Sheriff's Dept.. They lived in Lynchburg in 2004. Ginny K
Dear List, In the "Cemetery Records of Lincoln-Moore Counties, Tennessee," by Helen & Timothy Marsh, on pg. 156 (Rose Hill Cemetery) is a GEORGE W. STEWMAN (b. Jun 1851; d. 4 Jan 1920) and his wife, ELLA STEWMAN ("Died May 1870," "Age: (not given)"). Buried on one side of this couple is George W. Stewman's son, Robert L. Stewman (b. 12 Mar 1894; d. 15 Jun 1962). Buried on the other side of this couple is presumed to be another son, J. D. Stewman (b. 1899; d. 1944). A couple of headstones away is George W. Stewman's daughter, JOSIE STEWMAN SHELTON (b. 10 Oct 1897; d. 16 Oct 1957) along with her husband, Lonnie Rufus Shelton (b. 14 Feb 1892; d. 16 Apr 1964). I believe this GEORGE W. STEWMAN to be the son of Reuben W. Stewman & Leah Jane Scivally. In the 1860 LCT census (Stuman, Rubin household), GEORGE is listed as 10 years old. In the 1870 LCT census--enumerated on 21 June 1870--G. W. STEWMAN is listed as 20 years old, with his wife, R. A. (age 18) in household #81-81. Household 80-80 is R(euben) W. Stewman & L(eah) J(ane). The Franklin Co., TN marriage record has STEWMAN, GEO. W. to RUTHA A. TIPPS on 14 Jul 1869--no return. I have been unable to locate GEORGE W. STEWMAN in the 1880 census. However, in the 1900 Moore Co., TN census is the following household (208/208): Stewman, George W. Head June 1850 49 M TN TN TN (Married 29 years) Laura L. Wife May 1870 30 F TN TN TN (Married 29 years ???) 5 children / 4 living William A. Son Nov 1886 13 M TN TN TN Henry C. Son Dec 1890 9 M TN TN TN Robert L. Son Mar 1893 7 M TN TN TN Josie C. Dau Oct 1896 3 F TN TN TN John W. Son Apr 1900 1/12 M TN TN TN Are all of these GEORGE W. STEWMANs the same person? If so, then it would appear that he married: 1. Ella _____ who died May 1870. (OR COULD THIS ACTUALLY be a daughter buried with her father?) 2. Rutha A. Tipps, license dated 14 Jul 1869. BUT THERE IS NO RETURN, so she probably married immediate following the death of Ella _____ . Rutha A. Tipps is listed as George W. Stewman's wife on 21 Jun 1870. 3. Laura L. _____, who is only 30 years old in the 1900 Moore Co., TN census is listed as having 5 children, with only 4 living. However FIVE children are listed. Therefore, the eldest son, William A. Stewman, is likely not hers but Rutha A. Tipps' son; and another child died before 1900. (HOWEVER Rutha A. Tipps going 18 years without a child to then have one in 1886 really doesn't seem likely.) Speaking of WILLIAM A. STEWMAN, there is an ARTHUR W. STEWMAN who married Emily B. "Emma" Eslick. I have yet to locate their marriage record. However they are buried in the Champ-Ward Cemetery (pg. 287 of the "Cemetery Records of Lincoln-Moore Counties, Tennessee"). They are listed as: Arthur W. Stewman 1886-1963 & Emma E. Stewman 1888-1955 Arthur W. Stewmans' birth year (1886) matches the birth year of William A. Stewman (Nov 1886) in GEORGE W. STEWMAN's household in the 1900 Moore Co., TN census. I suspect that Arthur W. Stewman and William A. Stewman are the same person. Is anyone researching this family? Would anyone have any idea as to whether there really is only the one GEORGE W. STEWMAN who married three times? Are Arthur W. Stewman and William A. Stewman the same person? And who really is his mother? Are J. D. Stewman (b. 1899) and John W. Stewman (b. Apr 1900) the same person? Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. James L. Danley Vista, CA jldanley@sbcglobal.net
I continue to be amazed and inspired by the wonderful help that our readers give one another. I personally have been helped countless times in my pursuit of 19th century Carrigans and McLaughlins. Youngest son BENJAMIN HOWARD age 19, will be 21 on Feb. 22, 1831. Youngest daughter FANER PARKER, oldest son CHRISTOPHER HOWARD, eldest daughter SARAH BOONE CHRISTOPHER HOWARDS died Oct 19, 1852 his will was made a few hours before his death on the same date. Wife JANE HOWARD, son WILLIAM HOWARD. A NEWRON LITTRELL is mentioned but do not know why. I just have abstracts of wills by Helen & Timothy Marsh but all children if mentioned in the will would be in the abstract. The Lincoln CO., Archives 1000-B West Washington St. Fayetteville, TN 37334 has many records and is the cheapest copies you will fine. If there are any the archives would have William & Christopher's probate records. They may have copies of wills I am not sure but you can get copies at the court house in Fayetteville by sending a stamped self address envelope and $5.00 for each. The cost may be more now & I do not have that address but you can Google it. As no John or James is mentioned in either above will it could be that they were brothers, cousins or nephews of William & Christopher but there are the two John's on the 1830 LCT census Correction to the below post. There was also a male 20-30 in the household. The 1820 Lincoln census shows a William Howard with a male 18-26 in the household. A good possibility, but I need to get at those old records to figure out what¹s going on. Hello
In some of the court records where Asher Myers made report as guardian for James WC, Letty B and Mary Brown Swaner, Letty is sometimes referred to as Lilly. Have seen her also listed as Susannah. It is my belief also that Letty & Samuel were enumerated twice because they moved out of his parents' home into their own by the next month. Our family has always called her Letty B. > From: jmolitz@cox.net > To: iluvaz@cox.net; tnlincol@rootsweb.com > Date: Fri, 1 Jan 2010 20:45:52 -0800 > Subject: Re: [TNLINCOL] Samuel Weaver (b. 1832) > > Diane, > > >From the marriage records Samuel Weaver married Letty B. Diane, >From the marriage records Samuel Weaver married Letty B. Swanner 29 Jan 1869 >From the original census record for HH 857, 1850 LCT on Ancestry in Sub 1 (taken 30 Oct 1850) is Samuel Weaver 19 and "Letty" Weaver 19. The T's are crossed they are not L's. On the same census (taken 28 Sep 185) Sub 2 HH 524 is how you have it below. It is my opinion this couple was enumerated twice. I have found two other cases that this is true on the 1850 LCT census. In the book LCT 1850 Census Amended Transcribed the Deane Porch, some of us have found: Page 306, HH 843, Sub 1, taken 29 Oct 1850 Nancy N. (Wright) Wisner (widow of Martin Wisner) age 37, born in NC Martin 15 TN Martha 14 TN Clamiza 11TN William 2 TN In HH 842 is Martha Ann (Wright) Twitty, husband Whitfield Twitty & family. I believe Martha & Nancy are siblings Page 205, HH 91, District # 8, taken 29 Aug 1850 Nancy B. Wisener 39 NC Martin 15 TN Martha 13 TN Lucretia (Clamiza?) 11 TN (William is missing could be in another HH) HH 90 is James Wright from NC family. I believe another sibling of Nancy. Page 291, HH 730, Sub1, taken 21 Oct 1850 Nancy Wisener 32 TN Mathew (his name could have been Martin Mathew or the other way around) 16 TN Martha 14 TN Caminga (Lucretia, Clamiza?) 11 TN William 2 TN As Nancy Wisner husband died ca 1849 she may have had to move around in that short period of time I have another exsample. I am interested in purchasing a copy of the LCT Pictorial History Book, but I am not sure how much would be relevant to me. My ancestors were named Swinney/Swiney/Swinnea/Swinea/etc. and left Lincoln County by 1860. They lived somewhere near Taft. Gene, Here I go again but with some answers and questions. Susan E. Shull b. 7 Jan 1844 almost same time Shull family arrived in TN. Her mother died in June of that year and father Daniel B. Shull having hard time caring for three young children even with a slave cook. Daniel married 2nd time to a cousin of wife Julia, named Mary Polly Clark 1846 LCT (in marriage book). That lasted until 1850 when Mary became ill and died in child birth, both she and baby. This being 1850 and a census year they all show in Shull HH and Susan shows in Sally's HH because she was looking after 6 year old susan without even a step- mother. Now comes the question, if Sally's house is two houses away from Shull house, where were they located in 1850? I know by 1852 after Daniel married a 3rd time to Sarah L. Higgins, they lived in the shull home that Daniel and his slaves built north of Belleville near Chestnut Ridge, I trust the counties were same as now. In deeds and court documents I find Daniel owned and sold lots of land so I don't know where ever they lived. My dad went west and left it all to you and T have never ben there to my regrets. Hi Gene, Cleaning up old messages and I find this interesting so if I repeat myself, forgive me. Will Shull; Will or William Shull is product of Ambrose B. Shull and wife Eunice. Ambrose is a distant cousin and s/o Isaac Shull and Charity Humble from KY. They came to Williamson Co, Duck River area abt 1820 and I figure Ambrose born about 1838 KY. He appears on 1830 and 1840 LCT Census and died about 1847 LCT. He did have connections with my g. grandfather D. B. Shull that arrived 1844 from KY. According to Fayetteville Observer they were in business together in a clothing store. They made felt hats and wool clothing from cloth D. B. (his slaves produced on Shull Farm. The only other Will Shull I can find was black. Does anyone know who submitted the picture of Will, Ida Pack, and son?
On the 1850 Lincoln Co., TN census Sarah Swaner (b. 1813) is listed as head of household in HH 1295. Children listed are: Adeline (b. 1836) Affred (sic Alfred?) (b. 1838) Lafayette (b. 1841) Salina (b. 1844) A. Jackson (b. 1849) My understanding is that Sarah's maiden name was Chapman and her husband was Jerimiah B. Swanner. Here is where the issues come in and my questions . My notes say that Jerimiah d. 1833 and these children are born after this year. Do I have the year wrong? . Where did the children in HH 1295 come from? . Was this Sarah Swanner someone else's wife and not Jeremiah's? If so, where is Jerimiah's Sarah? . Heritage book of LCT, article 1682 states that Enoch Douthet's will acknowledges Alfred Swaner as 'son of his son Alfred Douthet'. . Because the surname is Swaner on the 1850 census and not Douthet, then are these children illegitimate? Doesn't it seem unusual for someone to have 4 children out of wedlock in 14 years in the 1850s? . Also, Alfred Douthet was b. 1818 - 5 years younger than Sarah. . Alfred Douthet (b. 1818) is in HH 896 on the 1850 Lincoln Co., TN census with wife Amanda Dillender (b. 1826). Did she die shortly after 1850? . Sarah apparently lived with children in 1860, 1870 and 1880 (I think in LCT). Can someone pull the census and see if her name is still Swaner? . Why doesn't any of the entries for Alfred Douthet on ancestry list his son Thomas E. (b. 1848)? Born in KY? It looks like he married in LCT in 1842 and then moved to KY by 1848 and then back to LCT in 1850? Is this correct? Could this be a nephew? As a side note, regarding Jerimiah B. Swanner's family.. . Where is Jerimiah B. Swanner's sister Liddia B. Swaner (b. 1815) in 1850? The surrounding children are in HH 951 with parents. . Jerimiah B. Swanner's mother is Lettie Bryant (b. 1786). There is a Lettie Bryant that married John Weaver. . Also, Jerimiah Swaner's daughter, Mary Brown Swaner, married a John Weaver (b. 1827). Are they the same person? Who are this John Weaver's parents? . I would not assume that Jerimiah B. Swanner's mother the same Lettie Bryant that married John Weaver, correct? If not, who are this John Weaver's parents? . Where is John Weaver in 1850? What a crazy family this is. J Thanks, Diane
