    1. Re: [LCT] RE:McClure/SHERROD
    2. I was interested in your connections to the McCLURE family and the SHERROD family but for different reasons. Martha J. LESLIE/LESLEY/LASLEY married a McClure in Lincoln or Franklin County. His name was Nathan or he was a son of a Nathan. My line is through Martha's younger brother, Alexander LESLIE/LESLEY, b. 1849, the s/o John and Catherine LESLEY/LESLIE/ LASLEY. Catherine died about 1868 and I have been looking for Alexander (Alex/Alec) in the 1870 Census. Where is your McClure in 1870? My SHERROD family was in Tennessee but migrated to NW Arkansas through Illinois. Both brothers, Arthur and William SHERROD, were veterans of the War of 1812 and received land in Bond County, Illinois. They both were Methodist ministers. They finally settled in Washington County, Arkansas. Any information on any of these family would be appreciated.

    3. No, Robert Campbell is listed as a laborer. He had more than three daughters (sorry, I'm at work and don't have my notes). There are some grandchildren in the household too. Looks like they were all illegitimate. I can't find marriage records on any of them except one and of course, it's not the 'right' one. Thanks for asking about Rufus! The doctor had 3 daughters I think who all had children out of wedlock. Eventually they all married , not sure if it was to the fathers of their children or not. 2. Yes I found them in Hardin County, Tn. then in Lauderdale county Al. then back in Hardin county. The dates I'm not sure with out checking but Sherrod rode with Forrest in the CSA and was discharged at the end of the war. There a story there at that time he livred in Tn so he rode a horse and carried his gun to sign up so they put him in the calvery since he had a horse to ride. Take care, Bill

    1. War of 1812 SOLOMON STEWART / STUART / STEWARD
    2. DS
    3. A few years ago at the National Archives in WDC, I had the opportunity to review lists of military under Tennessee's Col Pipken who was the subject of much controversy during 1814. I did not see a Solomon Stewart/Stuart. This is what I believe I did see on the 1812 index and I don't know if my Lincoln County Solomon Stewart is among them: 1. Solomon Stewart / Extra Batt., MD Mil 2. Solomon Stewart / 8 Regt (Magnien's) Vir. Mil 3. Solomon Steward /7R (Magnien's) Vir. Mil 4. Solomon Stewart / 7 Regt (Magnien's) Vir. Mil 5. Solomon Stewart / Det 3 R (Renick's) Ohio Mil 6. Solomon Stewart / 2 R (Burbank's) Mass Mil 7. Solomon Stewart / Foxcroft's Regt Mass Mil 8. Solomon Stewart / Capt Murray's Co, Ohio 9. Solomon Stewart /11 Regt (Pitts) MD Mil c. I guess he could have been part of the 39th or 49th from Lincoln County, but I do not know how to verify that. Or, he could have gotten around the service by either paying someone to take his place, or by being charged with food production on his land / plantation near the Flynt River. Any ideas / pointers / helps would be greatly appreciated. Cheers from 6600 ft Dick Stewart

    2. There is a family legend that Elizabeth was cast out for some reason and Sherrod married her and later her family became kinda well off and tried to contact her but she had died at that time. Where that come from I don't know. In tracing the family there were three Sherrods one B. 1776, one 1802 and one 1833. The one that married Elizabeth was 1802 and to my knowledge she was his only wife. There are many marriagesof McClures in the 1838-1880 do you have that book? Bill

    2. Hi, I just have to throw in that I have seen alot of info on Melungon, that you were this is your ancestor came from the Black Forest of Germany. If you were mixed, ei: black & white or indian & white, as you were not excepted if you were black or indian, so, if mixed call yourself "Black Dutch" or Black Irish" and you would be safe. Also that the term was used for way back when the Spaniards came over and mixed with the whites, blacks or indians...so, seems people used the term for many various reasons, which ever fit theirs needs. I have also seen many descriptions of this, dark hair and skin with fair eyes seems to be the most common. My grandfather used the term Black Dutch, and the Warrens are dark skin, haired with mostly all have blue eyes...I have not found any Indian or black in our line, again, hard to trace those when you couldn't be indian or black... 2. Brenda Campos
    3. Bill, Thank you for sharing the story on your Elizabeth MCCLURE, I really enjoyed reading it. I have a copy of several McClure marriages from the book "Early Middle Tennessee Marriages " the time frame it covers is 1838-1871 for Lincoln Co and 1838-1874 for Franklin County. So have you found your Elizabeth on census? And if so where were they living.? I have been trying to connect my line of McClures with the others in Lincoln and Franklin County. You can find my John MCCLURE age 63, on the 1850 census living in Lincoln County TN with his wife Artelissa age 49, also with the following children. John S. age 15, Frances G.age 16, Semantha J. age 14, George W. age 8. Census has that both John and his wife born in NC. John's son Frances G . is my line. He married Nancy ETHRIDGE. 3. Joy: There has been a FAMILY TREE DNA on the Mulegons. My husband, a Forbes, participated. It also showed the Sephardic Jew, just like my father who is of the McDaniel line. My father's line was also "said" to have Cherokee heritage. My husband's line is proven to have Chotaw blood. The DNA study for the Mulegons that my husband participated is not complete. Neither is the McDonald/McDanel/McDaniel DNA that my father participated in. The DNA testing is really fascinating. I do not know if you saw the PBS special on the origin man. There are also DNA test going on in the rest of the world to find out from whence forth we came. The more participants they have in the test, the more the origins of man can be established. Unfortunately, they are not testing women. Our DNA is passed from mother to daughter. We are too "complicated" for their test. But then too we do have our father's genes. Guess this is gross discrimination! Carmen McDaniel Forbes

I was reading your message and going to comment on the fact that my son-in-law has a full blood Cherokee grandmother from TN and her maiden name was Campbell....she said a lot of the Indians used that name..... then I read your surnames - my son-in-law is a Haygood spelled just that way. They were in TN but moved to AR near the Mississippi river. We have got to compare notes.... 3. The term Melegun is referred to for the following Native Americans who married African Americans and Native Americans that married White people or Native American who married African American. Walter Plecker of Virginia used this term to describe the people above. He was the first vital records clerk of Virginia. Walter Plecker made a list of surnames he considered to be Melugeons. If you want to know about Melugeon's here are a few links. http://www.multiracial.com/letters/plecker2.html http://www.multiracial.com/letters/moore.html This link he mentions TN and letter Mr. Plecker wrote to the Secretary of State of TN Read and judge for yourself. My RAMSEY and WARE surnames are on his list. Which means they married either an African American or a Native American not sure which. My WARE and RAMSEY are from VA. 1. Re: Jones Rogers or Rodgers
    2. Phoebe Lemons
    3. Your Jones Rogers was in Lincoln Co., Tenn in the 1820 census living next to Isaac Rogers, Absolom Rogers thenBenjamin Beggarly and then Joseph Rogers. Next to Jones Rogers was living Sarah Swan. Sarah Swan and Jones Rogers wife Elizabeth were sisters. They were from Laurens Co., So. Car and Jones Rogers was there a had a power of attorney from Sarah Swan to act in her behalf in the settlement of an estate from Alexander ( I think that was his name but will have to look it up to be sure) Henry. And I am sure he would be representing his wife as well but we did not find that mentioned. Jones Rogers was still in Lincoln Co. Tenn in the 1830 census and he then went on to Illinois. I do not find Jones Rogers in the 1840 Tenn census. I am a direct descendant of the Joseph Rogers that was living next to them in the 1820 census of Lincoln Co. Joseph is my gr gr grandfather. I have just checked our census here in Greene Co and do not find him . There is a burial in the Mt. Comfort cemetery here and I think it was either the son or grandson of Matthew, My grandparents and gr grandparents are burried in the Mt. Comfort cemetery and I grew up about three to five miles from there. We will have to do more checking and get back to you. As quick as I get time I will run out to Mt. Comfort and see what I can find again. I do not know what the whether report is for Saturday--that is the first day I will be off work and if it is not too much weather maybe I can get out there then. I am almost sure the Jones Rogers that was in Phelps co is the parentage of these Rogers that are here. We have not ever been able to place them with our family here. In 1822 I think it is the right year Isaac Rogers is selling land to Jones Rogers in Lincoln Co. Tenn. In 1821 Isaac is selling land to Absalom Rogers and the total of these two sales by Isaac represents land that Isaac bought--it think it was the total of what he bought. In 1830 our Joseph as in Bedford Co., Tenn and then he and his brother-in-law Hosea Mullings came to Green Co., Mo. about 1835. The Rogers that were there together in Lincoln Co. all were born in So. Car and I have reason to believe in Laurens Co. but I am not positive of the proof that it was Laurens Co--however they were born in So. Car. Would you care to give me your telephone number and I could call you and discuss these Rogers. If the Isaac Rogers is the one in Laurens Co., So. Car in the 1790 census he had three boys and three girls. In the 1800 census he had five boys and three girls. I believe one of the boys born after 1800 was the Absalom that was next to him in Lincoln Co. Tenn. If our Joseph was a son then he is one of the boys that was born before 1790 for our Joseph was born in April 6 of 1788. He served in the war of 1812 from Lincoln Co. Tenn entering the war in Oct. 1813 and was discharged in Jan 1814. He died here in Greene Co May 3, 1851. He and his wife Nancy Mullings Rogers are burried at Union Grove cemetery in Polk Co., Mo just across the line from Greene Co. Joseph and Nancy's children were James M. born 1819\ William Carroll born 1820 Greenberry born 1821\ John Hardin born 1824 (my gr grandfater) Samuel E. born 1826 Thomas J. born about 1830 Hosea M. born about 1833 Martha Elizabeth born 1839. I think there was one that died young and he is buried at Union Grove and I think his name was Stephen Bedford--I would have to check the records to be able to give you an absolute on this. We have searched for 40 years trying to find the parents and siblings to our Joseph. This may be one of the siblings. Thank you Phoebe Rogers Lemons PS I have a sister that is doing our family and has quite a bit of the information in her data base. She lives in Tulsa, Ok. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joan Howe" <joanhowe@earthlink.net> To: <TNLINCOL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 19, 2005 10:23 AM Subject: Jones Rogers or Rodgers > Greetings, > > I am researching Jones Rodgers (Rodgers) who lived in Tennessee, Illinois, and Phelps county, MO in early 1800's.
