Hello Lincoln TN researchers, 1840 Lincoln TN census transcription is now online. http://www.us-census.org/states/tennessee/l-tn.htm#Lincoln Lil Marlau and Jane Waller are listed as the transcribers. Many pages of the census images I obtained were very difficult to read; however, I transcribed the data as best I could. When I found that Jane Waller had transcribed the 1840 Lincoln TN census in 1970, I contacted George Waller, her son, and got a copy of her book. I compared my transcription with hers and defered to her judgement where I could not see a clear difference in the census image. Because my transcription would have contained inferior information for researchers had it not been for Jane Waller's work, I have listed her as a co-transcriber. In addition, I added the information for the columns that Jane's transcription was missing. Happy hunting, Lil Marlau
Question: Are records available on marriages in LCT that occurred between 1825 & 1835? H. Ben Cooper 54 Sable Drive Bella Vista, Arkansas 72715 bcooper@mc2k.com
Hi again, Yes I'm sure he was in LCT 1812-1815 (actually 1811-1816), according to the LCT court / docket / minute records, in what I will call the Flint River Basin. Now, exactly where he was physically, with or without the family, is up for question. My aunt says a Solomon Stewart was 'enumerated' in 'Cherokee Count(r)y in 1810. I see him enumerated in Mississippi Territory in 1816 with other apparent (relatives) Stewarts. He and his wife are having children in 1811 (presumably LCT), 1813 (presumably LCT), 1815 (presumably LCT), 1817 (Solomon Stewart is signer on a petion by Judge Toulmin (Toulmin - in Mobile; Solomon probably rooting around somewhere on the Tombigbee or Black Warrio river area) 1818 (unknown, possibly Marion County, AL), Solomon appears to be on a six month enlistment down at Ft/Camp Montgomery. 1822 (presumably Marion Co, AL), Solomon elected Commandant 16th Reg, 4th Bde in Marion County 1825 (presumably Tuscaloosa, AL), 1827 (presumably Tuscaloosa, AL), 1831 (presumably Perry County, AL), 1833 (presumably Perry County, AL); and 1838 (presumably Kemper County, Mississippi). And so forth, Dick Stewart ============================= Tennesseans in War of 1812 Officers 3 of them under Stewart - 2 James, 1 William Stuart - David, James and John enlisted Stewart - several of them Stuart - 2 Steward - several none of them a Solomon but there is one with blank for first name, and one named Saber ( Sabre) Steward are you sure he was in Lincoln Co 1812-1815? Have you tried records for men from Mississippi Territory? Since Fort Mims was in that area, there were many men who enlisted from what today is Alabama, Mississippi, etc. Mary ----- Original Message ----- From: "DS" <rmstewart@myexcel.com> To: <TNLINCOL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 20, 2005 3:11 PM Subject: [LCT] War of 1812 SOLOMON STEWART / STUART / STEWARD > A few years ago at the National Archives in WDC, I had the opportunity to > review lists of military under Tennessee's Col Pipken who was the subject of > much controversy during 1814. Please in your search, watch for John and Narcissa (Wilson) Sawyers. They seemed to have dropped off the face of the earth. Supposedly they left Hill County as they weren't happy there. They were not young folks to be moving again. I have not been successful in finding them in census, obits, or burials. Thanks so much. Bailey Sawyers was on the 1820 census of Lincoln Co. Do any of the Sawyers researchers know of this man and what, if any, connection he might have to the other LCT Sawyers? By 1830 he had moved south into Morgan Co. AL. Another Sawyers who appeared at the same time in Morgan, but not in Lincoln, was a Larkin Sawyers. Sure could use some help on these folks! Thanks so much for any clues, Gale

Hello Grace. Guess I made a mistake. What year do you show John born? In my records I show he was born in 1847, so couldn't see that he married in 1827. I must have a mistake somewhere. If you have those records, and especially back past David Sawyers, I would love to have a record of them. I correspond with people who descend from them. Hope all is well with you. Take care. If Gaylon was the son of George W. Sawyers and George W. was the son of David Sawyers, born 1722, and Elizabeth PAXTON, this is my line. Can be traced back to Norman French in origin. Had never been able to connect Gaylon to these Sawyers, so will just put him aside for now. Oh yes, it has helped. I had not been able to connect Gaylon with my line until now. That being John Sawyers, son of David Sawyers, and brother of George W. John married Narcissa Wilson in TN around 1827. They did migrate to Hill County TX. I have lost all trace of John and Narcissa Wilson Sawyers. They not liking Hill County left. Many of the children stayed in TX. John and Narcissa were not young when their intentions were to leave TX. I was told this by an aunt but was just to young to remember where she thought John and Narcissa moved to. Forever grateful to you for this information. Gaylon now fits into my line. Grace, I can give you a little information on this one SAWYERS line. Gaylon M Sawyers was born February 2, 1832, TN. He died March 18, 1902, Mountain Springs community, Hill Co., TX. He is buried in the old Hillsboro Cemetery, Hill Co., TX. He married Sarah E Wakefield in January, 1855, Lincoln Co., TN. Gaylon was the son of George W Sawyers and Rebecca CUNNINGHAM. They married about 1825. He was born bet. 1805-1807 in GA.His parents had nine children and it appears they were all born in TN. The children were; Eliza, Louisa, Sarah, Gaylon M, Melissa, George W, James M, Rebecca, and John. I also show that George W married Eliza SMITH, September, 1847, in Lincoln Co., TN. George W was the son of David Sawyers, born 1772, and died in 1820, and his mother was Elizabeth PAXTON who was born 1773 and died 1821. The name was later changed to Sawyer about 1900-1930. Not sure of that date. I hope this has been helpful to you. Grace, You are right. That should be TN. I corrected it immediately, but that was a seperate e-mail. Sorry for the confusion. I've very interested in learning more about the Wakefield family. My great grandmother, Elizabeth Pigg Wakefield McKinney, married a Wakefield first and they had three children. I know nothing about him, only that he was born IL. I can tell from census records where the children were born and their ages: Charles Wakefield was born 1831, TN; Delia Ann Wakefield was born 1834, NC; and Sarah E was born 1836 (March 17), TN (Lincoln Co., TN) Their father was born in IL. I will appreciate any help. Rita: I do not believe I answered your post, for that I am very sorry. If I did then count it up to those little gray cells miss firing. I have a lot of Martha Kings in my date base but not yours. Do not know much about the Morgans except I do know they owned land next to the KING and my WRIGHTS as well as CRAIN on Chestnut Ridge. I do not know anything about the WHITHFIELD as well. Have you tried Sherry Finchums or Will Johnson GEDCOM on rootsweb. Will is collecting on all surnames of LCT. Sorry I could not be of more help. Do you have the parents of Martha King? Julia In a message dated 1/12/2005 3:04:17 PM Pacific Standard Time, hera_r@bellsouth.net writes: << Hey Julia, Frank M WHITFIELD was born in 1811 in GA. Frank was employed as a boot & shoemaker. He & his wife were counted in a census in 1860 in Lincoln Co, TN. Frank married Eliza Jane PHILLIPS, daughter of Benjamin H F PHILLIPS about 1845. Eliza was born in 1810 in NC. This is all I have on him at the time. I have been searching for my KING and MORGAN roots. My great grandfather George David WHITFIELD married Nancy Louise MORGAN in 1894. My 2nd great grandfather Benjamin Hicks WHITFIELD married Martha Jane KING in 1868. Martha Jane had an afflicted sister, Margrette E WHITFIELD that lived with them till she died in 1928. These are all buried in the Morgan Cemetery in Elora. Do any of these folks sound familiar to you? So as the Whitfield names is connected to the Twitty and Wright (Twitty married a Wright and I do not know at this time if it is my Wright line) some of us Wright researchers are investigating the Whitfield name. Can you tell me more about your #6 Frank Whitfield. >>
Dear Jill, Tom King's wife is ill and he may not be monitoring this list if he has not gotten back to you privately. Not too long ago they moved to VA so they would be close to their grandchildren. Can Sherry Finchum or I help you. I have James Wyatt WELLS b abt 1860 married Laura E. KING b 1860. I do not have a date of their marriage. Could they have married in Bedford CO., TN? I have their children as Connie b 1882, Earlie P. 1884, Beatrice 1886 and Effie May 1888. Laura was the only child of William A. KING and Theadocia BURROW. After William died she Theadocia married Joshua Parks GAMMILL of Bedford CO. William KING was a brother to Andrew Jackson KING my 2 great grandfather. Theadocia and Joshua GAMMILL had a son Edward Cooper GAMMILL who married Esabella ARMSTRONG who was my grandmother Willie Etta ARMSTRONG WRIGHT'S sister. Their mother was Martha Evaline KING sister to William and Andrew Jackson KING. So Esabella's aunt by marriage became her mother in law. The info on Laura's children I got from Tom KING. Do you have any more info on them? Julia In a message dated 1/26/2005 5:37:35 AM Pacific Standard Time, jillc@midmich.net writes: << Hello, I stumbled across a publication posted by T.J. King about his family. My husband's grandfather is included in this publication (Earlie P. Wells- son of James Wyatt Wells and Laura King Wells) I am hoping to get in touch with Mr. King. He has Earlie listed as a female married to a McAffee. I have information on Earlie I am willing to share. Thank you!!!! Jill Cleckner
I am interested in the SAWYERS line you speak of. Any information one might have on Sawyers will be so much appreciated. I think there may be a typo where Gaylon Sawyers married a Wakefield in Lincoln Co., TX. Probably should be TN.
