Dear Mary, Many thanks for the information on the TURNEY and HAYS families. I browsed through several online databases and see that several have that Elizabeth Turney (m. James D. Hays & James Hancock) has a sister Permelia Ann Turney. It is interesting that the James D. Hays (1815-1895) and Rebecca Hays (1821-1894) have a daughter Permelia Ann Hays! Additional research is necessary to prove it, but my guess is that this James D. Hays might possibly be the son of James D. Hays and Elizabeth Turney. (NOTE: If only the younger James D. Hays had had a son named Jacob Turney Hays!) Jim
Have friend in San Saba Co. Tex. named Henry Warren. His family came to Texas via Kansas/Missouri. You might check that option. Carmen McDaniel Foebes
This Hay, Hays, Hayes, name has driven me crazy in connection with the Turney family in Illinois, Tennessee and Alabama. As far as Lincoln Co TN....this is what I have. Jacob B Turney Sr (b 1771, died in Boone Co AR) and wife Nancy Gilliam had lived on Clear Forks in Smith Co TN (later Dekalb but on border with Cannon) in 1820s....1830 to Lincoln Co TN. Their daughter Elizabeth Turney born ca 1792 Tn married a James D. Hays, had a son also James.....this Elizabeth Turney Hays married a James Hancock and had children William Hancock ca 1826, Charles Hancock ca 1832, and Isaac Hancock ca 1836.....then the Hancock family moved to Arkansas. 1850 Mississippi County Arkansas Chickasaw township there is James Hancock age 53, Elizabeth age 58, and their Hancock children. 1840 census Lincoln Co Tn census page 81 James D hays 40/50 1 female 40/50 1 male 20/30 1 male 15/20 1 female 15/20 1 male 5/10 2 males to 5 1 female to 5 1 slave (I don't know who this Hays is....if I have the right one or not) But Jacob Turney Sr is guardian of a James D. Hays. One James was the son of a John Hays who died about 1818. Jacob Hays is at his estate sale of John, deceased. Also: Goodspeeds - says wife of Jacob Hays was Mary Turney - this Hays went around 1818 t6o Alabama, Mary Hays died 1836 in TN. and I have a lot more about Dekalb Co TN Hays/Turney and also in Illinois. There seem to be so many with same names and I have never gotten them right. And it does not help that two different Elizabeth Turneys married Hays....the one Elizabeth I told you about born ca 1792 d/o Jacob B Turney Sr and Nancy Gilliam the other Elizabeth Turney born ca 1838 d/o Isaac Turney and Emaline Clark married 25 Jan 1855 in Dekalb Co Tn to John W. Hays and had at least 5 children....this Elizabeth b. ca 1838 was a grand-daughter to George Turney. George Turney and Jacob B Turney of LCT were brothers. I have been searching several years for information on my great grandfather, John W. Ellis, and his family who lived in Lincoln Co. He had a wife, Safrona, and two daughters, Ella W. born about 1874, Alice, born about 1880-1881, two sons, Daniel, born abt. 1879, and Henry, born abt. 1884. In the 1900 census, Henry and Alice were still living with John and Safrona, but Alice had married a man by the last name of Pigg and she had a son, Willie who was born in 1880. I later found Alice married to Coy Pridgen and they were living in Tulsa, OK. Her mother, Safrona was living with them. John died in 1914 in the TN Soldier's Home. Would appreciate any information on this family. June Ellis Carter
Diane, It appears that Ginny, all the way in Las Vegas, is an earlier riser than I this morning. I will try to answer some of your questions on the Warren line which she did not cover and offer an exception or two along the way. Early in my research I too wondered if Crawford White in the 1850 LCT census was a misspelling of my Carr Bailey White, however I came to realize that he was a different White. Why C.B. and wife Martha are not listed in the !850 census I do not know. He was a Justice of Peace from about 1854 to 1859 when he moved to north Limestone County Ala. He performed about a dozen marriages as listed in the marriage book for LCT. I have not yet found any proof as to the father of William R Warren. Some say his father was John, others Henry and again Willis. The John who was killed about 1820 does not appear to have children other than those by Courtney Lewis "with whom" as he said in his 12 June 1820 willl, "I have lived for several years." He adds: "Seven children--three boys and four girls which I believe are mine begotten on her body." These were minors and were placed by the court under the guardianship of Henry Warren and Willis Warren. I find no evidence that William R Warren was the son of John Warren and Nancy Ann Bradford, who had a son William B. This son was born in 1813 in Bedford County Tenn. and his family is given by various ones totally different from that of my William R Warren. Henry Warren had a son William born 9 May 1802 but reports of this family do not allow for him to be my William R. Willis Warren died about 1829. Henry Warren made an inventory of his personal property which was recorded 14 Sept. 1829. In this report he wrote concerning his horses: "one of them a grey horse claimed by Wm Warren a son of the dec." This is evidence that Willis had a son named William. This son could have been my William R. The name Willis continued to be used by the descendants of William R. My ggrandparents, Carr Bailey White and Martha Warren, named their third child Willis Warren White. Until I see proof to the contrary, I am proceeding on the hypothesis that the father of William R Warren was Willis Warren. It has been listed that Sarah, the wife of William R Warren, was a Polk. However, I have not been able to discover any evidence at all to support this assumption. William R and Sarah had a daughter Sarah who married William Polk 28 Dec.1843. The 1850 LCT census lists this William Polk and wife Sarah living with Sarah Warren widow of William R. It may be that some one mixed up the two Sarahs and put Sarah wife of William R as a Polk instead of her daughter. I just do not know the maiden name of Sarah Warren. Now as to the marriage of William Warren to Sarah Wilkerson 6 Feb. 1838 you may be correct in thinking that this is the son of William R and Sarah. However, there are three other William Warrens who married in 41,42,43. One who married Elizabeth Burns was the son of Daniel Warren. My grandmother, whom I remember well as she made her home with us until her death in 1946, was the youngest child of Carr Bailey White and Martha Warren. Her mother died when she was very young. Her father married again 16 Oct. 1859. Mammy, as we called my grandmotlher, first married Columbus Lafayette Thomas and second Robert Campbell Abernathy. I trust that this will add light to the issue, not heat. Jim Thomas. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Diane Casey" <ILuvAZ@cox.net> To: <TNLINCOL-L@rootsweb.com>; <jmrbythms@charter.net> Cc: <-D@rootsweb.com>TNLINCOL Sent: Wednesday, March 02, 2005 10:01 PM Subject: Re: Warren Family > Jim- > I read your post about the Warren's and I know there are a lot of Warren > researchers reading this post, please help out if you can. > > I was wondering if the missing Martha Warren-White on the 1850 census > might be Martha wife of Crawford B. Hi Diane and others interested. It has long been my belief that my White/Wilkerson/Warren families from Lincoln Co TN and Giles Co TN are of the lines but I have not been able to connect them to fit everyone's mindset. It seems rare to me that these three families all originated from NC to Lincoln Co TN first and then spread to Giles Co abt the time of the Civil War. Here is my case. Take pot shots at me, everyone. I can take it. Ginny Keefer My LCT connections; My William White Jr appears on Lincoln Co TN census first time in 1820. He was with his 2nd wife, Elizabeth ____, 20 years younger than he. Wm was 58 years old when their first child together was born, Martha White born 1814 Stokes Co NC- that used to be Rowan Co. Martha married Samuel C. Miles Mar 26, 1840 LCT. There were probably other children located around him from his unknown to me , first wife, Mary ___ who died before 1813, probably in Rowan/Stokes Co NC. Edith Chapman White has to be a child of William White Jr and 1st wife, Mary ___. Edith's daughter, Nancy, lived next door to William White Jr's son, James Franklin. Edith married James Tucker. They named a son, William White Tucker. James Tucker and Edith Chapman White's daughter, Nancy Ballentine Tucker born Sept 15, 1820 LCT married Gabriel M. Pylant. They named a son William White Pylant b Jan 26, 1856 MO. William White Jr and Elizabeth ____'s son, Carr Bailey White ,was born Jan 18, 1818, Stokes Co TN per his Giles Co TN obit. I do not know of a William Warren who married Sarah Wilkerson and would like to know more about this family if true. I would be grateful for any help or clues from LCT researchers. Ginny Keefer nee Virginia Lynn White. Note; William Clark White was my great, great grandfather. His son, James Monroe White who married Amanda Tennessee Warren- [dau of Henry J. Warren- died in Giles Co TN] , was my great grandfather, his son, John Lewis White buried at Minor Hill Cem. in Giles Co TN was my grandfather. My father, Aubrey Elmo White born Mar 7, 1905 Athens, Limestone Co AL is buried at old Florence Cemetery in Lauderdale Co AL where the other White's not buried at Minor Hill Cem, Giles Co TN are buried since 1850.
Jim- I read your post about the Warren's and I know there are a lot of Warren researchers reading this post, please help out if you can. I was wondering if the missing Martha Warren-White on the 1850 census might be Martha wife of Crawford B. White in HH 715? I know the names are not quite right but maybe? Right next to them are Thomas White in 716 and Lucinda White in 717. In the LCT Pioneers Vol. III, No. 2 page 28 there is an obituary for Mrs. Martha White, wife of C. B. White b. 05/26/1817 m. 02/18/1836 - Methodist - died 02/13/1857. Is this your Martha? Any one out there with Methodist church records ever see Carr White listed as Crawford? What about in the marriage record. Another puzzle I have is the notation the annotated 1850 census that William Warren married Sarah Wilkerson 02/05/1838 which is after his supposed death date and certainly would not make her the mother of the children. Could this be a marriage for another William Warren? However there is a Notley Wilkerson just 2 households over from the Warren household so it would seem they are somewhat related. Diane Casey
