OK soap box time: Send a self address stamped envelope with a letter asking for info. In the letter put the given name, surname, date of death or about time or if you want marriage certificates and bonds try to give both bride and groom names. This is what I do. I have a column for given name leaving it blank for them to fill in but I have a column for the surname that I fill in. A space for them to list what they have and for how many pages. They will send this back to you and you can go from there. Do not do what I did. I ask for all of Wright probate records. Came to $40.00. Also all of one surname marriage certificates. But as I am researching Wright. It was very interesting and I could eliminate and I did send some to other Wright researchers for what it cost me. One day when I have the time I will type all up I have and donate to the LCT site or Diane Casey for her site. Also I send the ladies at the Archives many letters of thanks plus Christmas Cards and such. They know me very well. I have been there a few time. Anyone who has been there will tell you what a wonderful environment it is to work in with all the help and the cleanliness of it. They keep these records in environmental conditions. Hope this helps. Below is some info on what will be in probate records as well as what I looked up for those researcher looking for info on Fanning This is not my line, just trying to help The will for Middleton Fanning that is in the Will book by Marsh is the son of Middleton and Daphnia so I have been told. The son's will was proven April 1861. However if you have access to the 1830 and 40 LCT census there is something interesting there. 1830 LCT census page 236 Fannen, Middleton 1male 5-10, 1 male 30-40; 1 female 0-5, 1 female 5-10 and 1 female 30-40 Is this the father or son?????????? 1840 LCT census page 22 Fannin, Middleton 1 male under 5, 1 male 15-20; 1 female under 5, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 30-40, 1 female 70-80 The 1840 census dates may be wrong but it looks like Daphnia is in LCT by 1840. It could be that Middleton SR. died someplace else before 1840 and Daphnia came to live with her son by 1840. However saying this if you will write to see if there are probate records at the Archives in Lincoln CO., TN there may be something there on Middleton SR. Understand this. Even back then you could not die without paying the tax man will or no. Your property was sold off and your widow had to buy back even her own cooking utensils if there was no will. They had "crying sales". These sells are great for it will tell you what kind of property your ancestor had if there were book, stills, farm equipment or tools from other trades as well as to who bought this stuff and who was in charge of selling it and when it was sold. If there was any land, and sometimes there was not, many farmers rented their land from others. If these records mentioned above survived they would be at the LCT Archives not the court house. Also they would be at the Archives in Nashville but you will pay much more for them. This is what I have learned from my great grandfathers will and probate records. He left his farm to his 8 named children although he had 10. This gave me proof of the story I was always told by my father that 2 sons ran off, so they were out of the will. The could sell their 1/8 part but the house belonged to his wife as well as enough stuff so she could live. Because of the will I looked up all the children for land deeds. I found out who bought some of this property and who lived north, south, east and west by deeds at the court house. Now I can place the farm exactly. Now what was more interesting was when his wife, REBECCA, died without a will. From her probate records I found out she had a guardian appointed for her 2 years before she died. Her youngest daughter MARY JULIA WRIGHT FOSTER & husband JAMES FOSTER lived with REBECCA WRIGHT and took care of her until her death in 1901 but they were not her guardians. The guardian had to account for every penny he spent of her money. He had to pay off her bill for a rug she bought from Paplanus store in Petersburg. Pay Julia for taken care of her mother. And get this she was on home made medication call "whiskey" for the last two years of her life. All this is in the guardian records which were part of her probate records. I also learned when things were sold off, again part of probate, that my grandfather JAMES FRANKLIN WRIGHT bought items but he was listed as DOCK WRIGHT. What a surprise to my sister and I for we had never heard that he had a nick name. So these are just some of the many things you can get for 25 cents a copy. A word of caution. These records can run over many years. Yes, just as today the wheels were slow. So they can consist of 10, 15 or more pages. Also it takes $12,000.00 to rebind the books at the LCT Archives. They are very large and heavy. The women that work at the Archives sure have their work cut out for they have to put them on the copy machine and reduce the size before they make a copy. Think about donation a couple of dollars for their time and to help defray the cost of rebinding these books. OK I'm done I will get off my soap box. Julia

Could you be of the Couch who married into Turney family - Madison Co Alabama? I ask becaue those Turneys moved to the area ca 1815-1818 same time their sister Rebekoh Looney moved, but around mid 1820s one of their brothers moved to Lincoln Co TN (he was amongst the Hancock, Davis, Gilliam, Timmons and his line connects to them)......anyway, all these Turneys were coming from Clear Forks Smith Co TN (today DeKalb on Cannon border). The Jacob B. Turney SR b 1771 who moved from Smith Co TN to Lincoln Co TN, late 1830s they moved on to Boone Co Arkansas.....but this whole bunch of Arkansas Turneys (3 of them moved there) connect to some not only from LCT but also Alabama - such as Strickland, DeLoach, Klepper/Clepper, etc. Any of those names sound familiar? That whole Turney, Gilliam, DeLoach, Klepper group connect thru the wives. Dortha: Sorry there is no will for Wm McKinney. However do write the Archives for probate records giving them the year you Will died so you get the right probate records. If there are no records there then more than likely he died else where but I have found records at the Archives where a person died else where but as someone was mentioned in the will or etc.that lived in LCT the Archives had the records. You can write to the Lincoln County Archives @ Lincoln County Archives 1000-B West Washington St. Fayetteville, TN 37334 We were just there in March and their hours continue to be 10:00 - 2:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They were very helpful! Jean Isom
Bob, your Couch were in LCT & left very early and there may be no records. But I would check the land deeds at the court house as they go back that far. Also at the Genealogy Socity are index books to some of the books they have at the Archives. If you look in these index books first you may find something like one of you Couch helped lay off a road, etc. The Archives do not have these index books. If you know what books, from the index, before hand then you will be able to save some time at the Archives. The Archives do not have these index books. But there is an index in each of the many books they have. Wish I could help for I have ordered the index books but have not received them as yet. Get back with me before you go to see if I have them yet. I don't know am I making myself clear??:-) Julia ----- Original Message ----- From: <gypsy97@bellsouth.net> To: <TNLINCOL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 05, 2005 8:52 AM Subject: Re: [LCT] Researching in Fayetteville > I'm also very glad to get the info on visiting Fayetteville. I'm also very glad to get the info on visiting Fayetteville. It's not easy to restrain myself from rushing over there and digging into records, but I really need to prove that my g-g-grandmother, Martha E. (Gray) Davis, who married James Nathaniel Davis in Cape Girardeau Co. MO, 12 Jun 1861, is the same Martha E. Gray, b. 1841, daughter of Burgess Gray & Elizabeth (Cunningham) Gray. I know Martha was born in TN, and that her parents were both born in NC. I am relatively new at this and seem to have exhausted all the sources of info that I know. They married in MO, but if it is the same Martha E. Gray born in LCT in 1841, is it possible that one of the local newspapers at the time would have a line about a local woman marrying in Missouri? Failing that, I just don't know what to do next. Robert, I can only tell by my book if there is a will for someone that died in LCT between 1810-1921. There are no COUCH wills. However there should be probate records at the Archives. The hours that I posted for the Archives were good last June when I was there. The problem is they do not have a phone or email service. Thanks for your reply, Vicki. These names are not familiar to me; but will keep them, just in case. And will check on the Cannon name. Thank you very much. I have not searched all the papers I have (I received them from Julia Wright Molitz) - I see that on one list of Registrants there are a Mattie J and Willie F. Cannon who joined Mt. Hebron - Mattie Oct. 14, 1887 and Willie Nov 2 1882. They were received by "Experience." There are several Wright names -- covering the period 1871 -1893. There are some earlier records -- I think they are transcribed and perhaps not the originals...Rebecca Wright received 13 Oct 1839 - baptism by pouring. The name Wright appears many times but there are few occurrences of the name Cannon. Vicki Moore McCarty

Joy, The only things you can find at the court house in Fayetteville, TN are deeds and wills. Yes they are indexed. They charge $1.00 each for deeds and same for wills. However make sure the deed you want copied is the one they are copying. Take a look at the book before they copy. I did not do this and found I had some deeds that I did not want. Believe the court house is open at least by 9:00 AM and might close by 5:00 PM. Think about going to the Archives for if there are probate records they would be there even if there is no will. The Archives also have marriage certificates and bonds. Even if there was no will there may be probate records. The Archives are only open Tuesday and Thursday 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Let me know what name you are looking for a will and I can tell you if there is one or not from 1810-1921. Also there is the Fayetteville Public Library that has a very good genealogy department as well as the LCT Genealogy Society which is not far from the Archives but they are only open on the week end. If you are coming from a long ways you can contact the President or other officer and they may be able to make arrangements to have it open for you during with week. I would like any info on John Gibson who was a Revolutionary War soldier from Orange Co. NC living in Lincoln Co. He married Margaret Joyce. Is he the same John Gibson who signed the Cumberland Compact? Lucy
Dear Norma: The WRIGHTS that were members of the Mt. Hebron Church are my WRIGHTS, but there was a JOHN B. WRIGHT that I cannot place that was a member of the Church. He married NANCY CASTLEMAN, also a member of the Church, 26, Nov. 1845. He left the Church by death, so the membership list says, but I cannot find them on any LCT census. By the way I have a new email address jmolitz@cox.net. I have been off line for 2 weeks trying to get my new "fast link cable" working correctly. Hope all is fixed now. Noticed the interest in Thompson and Rorax. My Esther (Eliza) Angeline Thompson married Joseph Allison in Franklin co. in 1854. They lived in Lincoln co. Joseph was much older than Eliza and he died by 1860. Eliza was a widow age 23 living alone in the 1860 LCT census and married neighbor William P. Holman in 1861. William Pearson Holman was first married to Nancy Rorax who died after the 1860 census and before Sept. of 1861 when he married Eliza Thompson Allison. Looking for information on this Eliza Thompson. She was just 19 or 20 when she married the much older Joseph Allison in Franklin co. Eliza was born in NC. Susan Holman Dallas disdsh@aol.com

I haven't been able to find any info at all on the Thompson that Louisa Rorax was married to. The William Rorax living with her in 1850 is her half brother, and brother to Nancy. Louisa married William Thompson in 1845 in Lincoln Co., but that's all I know right now. I believe he also had a brother, David...David and William's mother was Anna(Elizabeth)Thompson born in NC in 1784. I plan to go to the Fayetteville courthouse later this week, and I hope to be able to get more info on the Thompsons. I will take the info you gave me also and check for you.
