Your property was sold off and your widow had to buy back even her own cooking utensils if there was no will. They had "crying sales". These sells are great for it will tell you what kind of property your ancestor had if there were book, stills, farm equipment or tools from other trades as well as to who bought this stuff and who was in charge of selling it and when it was sold. If there was any land, and sometimes there was not, many farmers rented their land from others. ================================

    3. This sounds similar to a story I was told about my great grandmother. Her husband died and he and his father had been in business together. My great grandparents had a very nice home in town with a good bit of land it sounded like, and also had a farm with a good bit of acerage. He evidently didn't leave a will and his father just took over. He had a guardian appointed for the three children, my grandmother was one of these children. It seems that my great great grandfather had lost his first wife and had remarried and they had about 12 children and he felt he needed what his son had left. A cousin of mine has seen the paper-work on this transaction. My great grandmother had an opportunity to leave that state and travel with her brother and his family to another state and start over. They moved westward. 1. County Archives
    2. Jean Isom
    3. Grace: First, I would go to http://www.state.tn.us/sos/statelib/tslahome.htm and look at the Tennessee History and Genealogy section. From that area, click on "County Records" and then click again on Early County Records Available on Interlibrary Loan, your local library can access these microfiche for you (mine does it for free) and you can check for yourself if your ancestor is listed in the records. You can make copies from the microfiche or note the location of the record and asked for a copy from the Archives. Since they often have the original, your copy should be better. If your library can't help you for some reason, you could write the Archives and ask them if they would be willing to look up a particular person in a particular record. I don't know what their policy would be, but I think they would like to be as helpful as possible. They certainly went the extra mile for us. When we went on Tuesday and said we would be back on Thursday, one of the kind women who works there had the indexes out and open to our ancestors when we arrived. You probably have done all this, but just in case, I would suggest you go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tn/lincoln/lincsearch.htm and put your ancestors name in the first search engine and when it pulls up the list, you can use that information to tell the Archives folks where to look for the documents you want. They have Jane Waller's information as well as the county records, so most of what the search engine pulls up will be in the Archives. Hope this helps! Jean How do you know without going there your ancestors are the ones they have in their records? 3. someone found a list of heirs for one of my line....in the LCT loose papers file. Apparently, there was a box with papers they did not know how or where to file, so it is called loose papers. This listed all the heirs and where they lived....it was for a settlement of an estate I guess. So it is amazing what you might find. 3. Something I forgot to mention, have you looked at War of 1812 records on your men? I ask because it seems a lot of them went with Jackson thru that area during the war, then as soon as they were released about May or June of 1815, they took off that fall to move to MS territory......a lot of them made the move 1815 - 1818 or so. I have Sistler's index of Tennesseans in War of 1812 and found 13 entries for Couch surname for enlisted men.... 7 for John 1 for Jonathan 1 for Thomas no Jesse but there is a James I did not find any Couch in officers listing. I you want more info let me know. 3. Mary, I do not know of any Turneys who married Couches. We have evidence of the Couch folks in Madison County MS (Now AL) as early as 1808. In the January 1809 MS Territory census four Couches were listed as heads of household. John Couch Sr, John Jr. and Thomas Couch who lived on adjacent farms along Indian Creek. I think these three may have all been related and moved from Greenville, SC around 1897-1808. They were in Huntsville Area until about 1820 when all three show up in Lawrence County, AL. Now the other Couch person in the 1809 census was Nicholas Couch who may have been a son of Jacob Couch of Greene County, TN. Nicholas and his sons moved to Crawford County, AR and were there for the 1860 census if not earlier. Some say my Couches (John SR, JR and Thomas) may have been in Lincoln County, TN prior to their move to Madison County, (AL) in 1808. I know that Lincoln County was not formed until 1807 or 1809 from Bedford County, TN. I do have some relatives who were among the Couches in Bedford Co, TN. I ask becaue those Turneys moved to the area ca 1815-1818 same time their sister Rebekoh Looney moved, but around mid 1820s one of their brothers moved to Lincoln Co TN (he was amongst the Hancock, Davis, Gilliam, Timmons and his line connects to them)......anyway, all these Turneys were coming from Clear Forks Smith Co TN (today DeKalb on Cannon border). The Jacob B. Turney SR b 1771 who moved from Smith Co TN to Lincoln Co TN, late 1830s they moved on to Boone Co Arkansas.....but this whole bunch of Arkansas Turneys (3 of them moved there) connect to some not only from LCT but also Alabama - such as Strickland, DeLoach, Klepper/Clepper, etc. Any of those names sound familiar? That whole Turney, Gilliam, DeLoach, Klepper group connect thru the wives.
