    1. Re: [LCT] Naming Traditions
    2. Well I hope you're right because I've grown attached to Burgess and his line. I'm the oldest of 8, and we are all named for at least one relative, although my mother would insist she named us after the saint and not the relative! 2. Most of my family lines (Protestants) from NC had, by ca 1830's, stopped naming most of their children after relatives. I've completed extensive lines on most of my families and find that the naming patterns that so many people think to be prevalent in some families just weren't applicable to most of my southern family lines. In my family lines if there were 7-9 kids in a family, only one or two of them might be named after a relative. Ruth

    1. Re: [LCT] Naming Traditions
    2. From the Burgess Gray line, there are (m) Thomas, Hugh, James, Robert; (f) Elizabeth, Nancy, Ellen, Mary A. Polly, Isabelle(a). From the MO line: (m) Edwin Franklin; Ralph; (f) Clara Josephine, Mary Emma, Avee Ann, Ida, and so on. The only match I've ever know (outside Elizabeth which is pretty common to all lines), is that my ggrandmother is Clara Jo, and her dau., my aunt, is Clara Isabelle. Maybe it's not a such a big thing, but the only connection between Martha Elizabeth Gray Davis in MO and Martha E. Gray in LCT, is the year of birth, 1841, and the state of TN. Other M. E. Grays in TN for the 1850/1860 census years have a different birth date. Also, the parents of both Martha E.'s are born in NC. On the one hand I want to accept that these are the same person. On the other, I am getting engrossed into researching the LCT connection and back into NC and VA, but I don't want to expend further effort (to say nothing about getting attached to these people) until I can be nearly sure I am researching my own family line. 1. [LCT] Naming Traditions
    2. I have been trying every way I can think of to connect Martha E. Gray of TN, who married James Nathaniel Davis in Cape Girardeau County, MO, 1861, with the Martha E. Gray, dau. of Burgess & Elizabeth Gray of LCT. Both Marthas were born in 1841. I am puzzled by the names of Martha Gray Davis' six children - not one has a name I recognize from those of the Burgess & Elizabeth line. Is this an indication that they are not the same person? One or two children I could understand, if the remaining 4 had names I recognize, but they don't. Can someone tell me if they have found this to be true in their line; maybe it's more common than I thought. In researching the Grays from back in NC and even VA, I find brothers who all have children with the same names, making it difficult to determine who belongs to who (there should be a "whom" in there I'm sure). Thanks for any advice you have. Martha

    3. And in the 1880 census William Moore is living with his wife Elizabeth in the household of his father-in-law Thomas V. Greer, Lincoln County, District 10, page 146. Lewis H. Moore is in the household of his cousin Joseph H. Greer two pages before (p. 145) and Frank L. Moore, his son, is on the following page (145b.) I would think that is a reasonably good indicator that W.L Moore who married Elizabeth Vance Greer is the son of Lewis H. Moore. W.L. & Elizabeth Greer Moore's children are: Carrie b. abt. 1882, Martha Elizabeth b. 1884-85 (this is the Elizabeth Moore Wells referred to on Joseph Harmon Moore's WWI card-- she married Ulric Wells), Vance b. abt. 1886, Joseph Harmon b. 1886-1888, and William Lewis b. 1890. I have not been able to find out who this W. L. Moore is-- he was b. abt. 1857 and died aft. 1890. He COULD be William Moore the son of Lewis H. Moore (son of John Henry & Elizabeth Harmon Moore.) Here's how I found this-- Found an Elizabeth M. Wells in the 1930 census in Fayetteville with husband Ulric. Then found a WWI Draft Registration card for Ulric Wells in Petersburg, same date as Joseph Harmon Moore's, same address listed, and wife listed as Martha Elizabeth Wells. Then found them all in Petersburg in 1920 census: Ulric & Lizzie M. Wells next door to William Lewis Moore (Jr.), his wife Sybil, and his brother Joseph H. Found a 1945 newspaper clipping from Petersburg stating Misses Mayme & Clara Percy were visited by Mr. & Mrs. Ulric Wells of Fayetteville. Then found Lizzie Moore, Dora Percy, & Clara Percy listed as granddaughters of Thomas V. Greer in 1910 census District 10 (near Petersburg.) Thomas V. On WWI Draft Registration cards, he lives in Petersburg and lists Elizabeth Moore Wells as his closest relative. Can't find him in census. 1. GOT A QUESTION
    2. Hello everyone, Have a question for the list. Has anyone ever heard of a little town called BLANCHE? I think this little town is located a little ways from Dellrose? Does anyone know if there is a cemetery in the vicinity? I'm not sure the little town of BLANCHE still exists or not, looking for a cemetery in that area. Does anyone know if all the cemeteries in Lincoln Co. have been logged in a book? Really appreciate any help on these questions. SHEILA

    3. I know there is still a town named Blanche. I lived there as a young child. Hopefully someone else can tell you about the cemeteries. 3. You can view a list of all cemeteries in Lincoln CO., TN and else where if you go to www.findagrave.com. Click onto "Search for cemetry" which is on the right hand side of page. Then click onto "browse by country", next page choose a state and then choose a county. Some cemeteries have listing but most do not. Think about contributing to the cemetery of those you have dates of birth and death of. There are also maps of where the cemetery are.
