    3. Brenda, I am delighted to learn of the book featuring several volumes of Madison County Cemeteries. I am descended from a John Couch and Thomas Couch who were in Madison County from 1808 until about 1820. Are any Couches listed in the cemetery books? Which of these were burried during the time 1808-1820? Any help would be appreciated. There are some who believe that these Couches came from Lincoln County, TN while others believe they came from Greenville County, SC about 1808 or 1808. Thanks a bunch Robert H. 3. We often assume if our ancestors were from the south, they were Confederate. I have been surprized at how many - and it seems especially in Tennessee - chose to be Union. This meant they had to often moved their families north - at least for the war years. Later many of them would move back into the south but perhaps to a different area. I know some of Eastern TN was Union, and the area around border of Carroll and Benton Co TN (my ancestors were in 7th CAV USA and a lot of that unit were captured and sent to Andersonville where they were prisoners along side their brothers and cousins who had moved to Illinois in 1850s and joined Union unit from there and also captured). This Benton Co TN group, they were all originally from NC and usually Methodist if that means anything. I don't know about Lincoln Co - if there were any Union people in that area or not....but I know a section of Northern Alabama had Union people (think of Looney's Tavern). Of course border states such as Kentucky, and Missouri had both CSA and USA as did Arkansas (they had a Peace Society).....and Maryland while it stayed in the Union had many Confederates there.....North Carolina also had pockets of Union people.....it seems to me that usually where you had mountains the people there tended to be ones who stayed with the Union, perhaps because of their types of farming they did not have as many slaves? I am not sure why.....it just seems that way to me. The mountain section of Virginia became West VA because they wanted to stay in the Union. Anyway, if you chose Union, your family might be in a bad situation staying at home, and a move to a new location would be in order. 3. Hi Frances, No luck in finding any of the people you are looking for..sorry. FANNING CEMETERY Location ..is located in the far reaches of Madison Counrty and can only be reached by jeep, trail bike, or a good horse, or on foot. It is accessible by going to Franklin County Tennessee and following the trail down. The area is extremely remote and nearly impossible to locate. It is called "The King Cove Cemetery" on maps. Below are the Fannings listed with headstones. Milton L. Fanning december 1837- May 1907 Rachel B. Fanning April 1838- November 10, 1918 It says that there are many other unmarked graves in this cemetery. Your people may not have a stone. Also could not find John Landess or James Forest Landess. So sorry I could not be of more help to you. 3. Aileen: There is no will for Sarah B. Brown. Do you know how far back your Brown ancestors go. I have both Brown and Mitchell in my lines. My 3 great grandmother was Mary "Mollie" Brown married to Thomas Armstrong. They got to LCT from SC before 1820. Then on the King side Isabella Mitchell married Andrew Jackson King in 1822, my 2 great grandparents. All lived in the Chestnut Ridge Area of LCT. There are other Browns who have wills that are listed in the Will Book if you want me to do any more look ups. 3. Dear Suzanne, The "LCT Bible Records," Vol. 5, pgs. 29 & 30 has the Bible record of Mrs. Minnie Lee (Kirkland) Edmondson. She married Charles Boffman Edmondson and is the daughter of John Vinus Kirkland and Minnie Martin. An excerpt from the Bible record is as follows: "GRANDPARENTS (Husband's) Father's Father: Chas. E. Edmondson Father's Mother: Louisa Fancy Mother's Father: Dan Downing Mother's Mother: Martha Templeton GRANDPARENTS (Wife's) Father's Father: Levi Kirkland Father's Mother: Irene Fuqua Mother's Father: Iverson B. Martin Mother's Mother: Sally Ann Roberts." The 1860 Humphreys Co., TN census has the following household: "KIRKLAND, Levi 35, Arrena 32, Mary 9, Joel 7, John 3, Anderson 6/12, Sarah GWIN 37, Isaac QUARLES 11, Jessee F. 9." I hope this helps! 3. I don't have anything on Sam Kirkland, but am curious who the father of John Vinus Kirkland might be? My husband's Kirkland/Kirklins are from Bledsoe/Hamilton/Sequatchie Co. "James L. Danley" <jldanley@sbcglobal.net> wrote:Dear List, I have three Sam Kirkland's in my database: 1. Sam R. Kirkland (1896-1965) -- son of John Vinus Kirkland (1857-1918) & MINNIE Martin (1869-1939). NOTE: His sister, MINNIE Lee Kirkland was born 28 Jul 1891. 2. Sam Kirkland -- married an unknown daughter of John Albert Snoddy (1864-1937) & Mary Ellen Renegar (1869-1948). An infant Snoddy was born and died in 1896. 3. Sam Kirkland -- married a Kathleen (maiden name unknown). They have a daughter MINNIE Katherine Kirkland born 26 Nov 1939. My hunch is that all three are really the same person. The name "Minnie" is very strong evidence to that fact. Would anyone have any additional evidence or proof that they are, in deed, one and the same?
