    1. Burrow Family in Lincoln County
    2. John R Sanders
    3. Researching the Joshua Burrow family of Lincoln County. My info shows Jarrell Burrow, son of Phillip Burrow, married to Eleanor Cain, were parents of Joel/Jarrell Burrow. He was married to Elizabeth Alexander. Joel/Jarrell Burrow and Elizabeth Alexander were parents of Joshua Burrow. Joshua married Martha Neusum. Joshua apparently died after the 1840 census, as Martha Burrow/Burrough is shown on the 1850 census as head of the household, with children, Lucy, Wiley G, Jason, Harriet, Mary E Elvira, Martha, Matilda , Maria. Does anyone have any information on Joshua Burrow? Jason, his son, was my great-grandfather. Ruth

    3. I have posted two JPEG images that illustrate what I described in my last e-mail. The first shows the northern part of Lincoln County from the TDOT map of Lincoln County: http://www.gscassociates.com/images/TDOT_CR.jpg The second shows a part of the same area on a topographic map on topozone: http://www.gscassociates.com/images/topozone_CR.jpg Steve

    1. Re: GNIS LINCOLN CO TN CEMETERY MAP
    2. Steve Carson
    3. Brenda: Here is how you can match up road and cemetery names using on-line resources. You can download the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) maps of all Tennessee counties at: http://www.tdot.state.tn.us/Maps/county/default.htm These maps contain the names of all the roads and the location of most cemeteries -- however the names of the cemeteries are not given :-( The USGS topographic maps do contain the names of the better known cemeteries, but they do not contain the names of roads :-(. These maps are freely available on line from many sources, including: http://www.topozone.com/ Here is an example of how you can use the two together: 1) Download the Lincoln County map from the TDOT site above. 2) Starting in the far northern part of Lincoln County, select a location that can be found on a topographic map. I picked "Bledsoe". 3) Go to the topozone site above and enter Bledsoe, TN in the "Place Name Search". On the next page choose the Bledsoe in Lincoln County from the two that come back from the search. 4) Switch the map size to "Large" and "Update Map". That will get you this map: http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=35.33556&lon=-86.57806 that you can scroll about and match up cemetery names with those shown on the TDOT map. Note that both Google and Yahoo display both maps and satellite images as well as hybrids that combine the two. These have some road names but do not show either the names or the locations of cemeteries. Here is one example showing the Muse cemetery: http://maps.yahoo.com/beta/#mvt=h&maxp=search&trf=0&lon=-86.573494&lat=35.33 7464&mag=1 Google, in particular, has spotty high resolution satellite converge of much of Lincoln County, including the area around Bledsoe. 3. The stepmother of Roy Van Jones, Jean Phelps, was the first wife of Charles Phelps, husband of Doris S. Phelps. "James L. Danley" <[email protected]> wrote: Dear List, First my belated condolences to the families below. I would appreciate help in proving a connection stated in a recent obituary. The obituary of Mrs. Doris S. Phelps (d. 9 Dec 2005): "PHELPS, Doris S., 67, of Mulberry, died Friday night (Dec. 9, 2005) at Lynchburg Nursing Home. A native of Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Sarah Noah Stevenson and a member of the West Fayetteville Church of Christ. She was retired from Blue Ridge and Lincoln Mfg. Survivors include her husband, Charles Phelps; two daughters, Sandra Phelps of Lynchburg and Debbie Page of Lynchburg; two sons, Thomas E. Phelps of Kelso and Larry Phelps of Mimosa; three sisters, Thelma Luna of Boonshill, Linda Smith of Fayetteville and Cathy Braden of McBurg; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday at Higgins Funeral Home with Bros. David Sain and Ryan Roark officiating. Interment was in Mulberry Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Alzheimer's Association Highland Rim Chapter, 201 West Lincoln Street, Tullahoma, Tenn., 37388." The obituary of Roy Van Jones (d. 20 May 2006): "JONES, ROY VAN, 52, of Kelso, formerly of Dickson, died Saturday (May 20, 2006). Mr. Jones was a native of Coffee County and the son of the late Raleigh E. and Betty Jones. He loved working with computers and was employed by Shiloh Industries in Dickson. Survivors include three sisters, Joanna Barnes of Clarksville, Denise and Rick Henninger of Findley, Ohio, and Thereasa and Tommy Phelps of Kelso; step-mother, Jean Jones of Fayetteville; two step-sisters, Sandra Phelps and Debbie Page of Lynchburg; a step-brother, Larry and Angela Phelps of the Mimosa Community; and two nieces and three nephews. The family will hold a private service at a later date. The family requests in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the U.S. Bank for Education." Roy Van Jones' obituary names his step-mother as JEAN JONES. It also names one of his sisters as Thereasa who married Tommy Phelps (the Thomas E. Phelps named as the son of Doris S. Phelps in her obituary). Then his obituary names the three other children of Doris S. Phelps as his step-sisters and step-brother. (NOTE: Roy Van Jones' obituary does not name Thomas E. Phelps as his step-brother.) I may be missing something obvious, but I don't want to leap to any conclusions (i.e. that "step-sisters" and "step-brother" should really be "sisters-in-law" and "brother-in-law"). 3. Hi Bev, - The notion of him being born in TN is as good as anything else. - The fact that he was living out his live in the [settled] Northport area leads me to believe that his parents could have very well 'emmigrated' out of TN and 'immigrated' into the AL / Tusc / Fayette / Marion / areas in the 1817-1822 timeframe or so. My ancestors and allied families came from Lincoln County, TN [LCT], and had 'allied' ties to the CLEMENTS. There were one (Benjamin) or more CLEMENTS in LCT, at least one of which will ring LOUD bells in Tuscaloosa County. Known Alabama CLEMENTS include Hardy CLEMENTS, and Benjamin CLEMENTS, and possibly Reuben CLEMENTS -- A question is: who were John C. CLEMENTS' parents? -- Also, what counties were the 1870 and earlier census? All Tuscaloosa? -- What was the wife's name? -- What were the childrens' full names - My ancestors went from LCT to Marion to Fayette (or were in the same area while Marion / Fayette / Tuscaloosa evolved in their county boundaries), and I know there was a Northport general store or two, at least one of which was run by allied family McCONNELL, and the stores included accounts with allied families HARKINS, STEWART, McCONNELL, and perhaps (I don't remember and don't have the data handy) CLEMENTS. - A birth of 1812, if I compare to my ancestors, would have his dad as born possibly in the late 1780s to mid-1790s, depending on his order of birth among his brothers/sisters. That would put his dad as a potential candidate to be considered as probable pioneers of a TN county such as LCT. Without singling out LCT as the only possibly county, many of the pioneers of lower TN counties and upper AL counties, were indeed in more northern or eastern TN counties just prior to 'moving on'. All that said, then his dad could very well have hailed from NC, SC, GA, VA. - Since 1812 was generally a war year (or pre-war depending on where his dad was), I would postulate that his parents would have just arrived in __(pick one)___ county, (TN) the year or two before (if they were in the migration/pioneering mode), as part of the 'arriving pioneers' and the 'departing indians' scenario. - However, having duly noted that you said that the prominent state figuring in the various census info you have is AL, I would have to really ask a question of 'which' AL in 1812, since AL per se didn't exist as a state at that time. So we're talking District of Nathez, District/Territory of Mississippi, (up to ____18xx) or Territiory of AL up thru about 1817, no? If one takes the 'AL' statement as valid at face value, then there's only a very few areas of [territory] of Alabama that he could have been born in, and of course probably zero records available on that. I would, I guess, be thinking in term of Mobile, or the Tombigbee settlement, or one or two of the US army forts back in that 1812 time. According to one reading, the Mississippi county of Washington in 1810 included what eventually became Alabama. Mississippi became a state in 1817, Alabama a Territory in 1817, and Alabama a state in 1819. - There are a number of counties with minute docket / probation records back in the, say, 1795 - 1812 times wherein various CLEMENTS might have been landowners or otherwise mentioned in the civil records. That might help narrow down the candidate TN counties. - Finally, there is, I suppose, a small chance that the 1820 AL census would show his dad?, and the counties in AL with CLEMENTS in 1820 probably shouldn't be that many. - If I read correctly, he would have been in AL during the civil war? Does he show up in any of the civil war records? - What are the middle names of his children? Allied families could be evident in some of them, although not always. (Supposedly my ancestor Sarah C. [HOGAN/HOGINS] Stewart [wife of Solomon STEWART) had a middle name of CLEMENT.) The parents of my Solomon Stewart m Sarah Hogan/Hogins are said to be: Charles STEWART mar. Elizabeth CLEMONS/CLEMENTS. - If he owned land in Northport, the transactions, if any, should be in the Tuscaloosa courthouse? - The Index to Wills 1808-1870 shows James CLEMENS, Jeremiah CLEMENS, Joseph CLEMENT, Elizabeth CLEMENTS, Hardy CLEMENTS, Israel CLEMENTS, Jacob CLEMENTS, Nancy CLEMENTS, Reuben CLEMENTS, Henry CLEMONS, and Henry CLEMONS, encompassing Madison, Mobile, Tuscaloosa, Chambers, Lauderdale, and Montgomery counties. - The book Tennessee Cousins, page 751, shows the following as ancestors of Gibson Co. Families who came from North Carolina: - William CLEMENT father of Dr. B. W. CLEMENT who m. Elizabeth LOCKE - John C. CLEMENTS m. Cynthis UTLEY, of Wake County, N. C. (this may or may not be related to your research, but this CLEMENTS / UTLEY and Wake County, NC, for example, rings all kinds of bells for my STEWART line. One example: the brother to my Solomon's dad Charles, was a George STEWART mar. Rebecca UTLEY. Within all of this Charles / George STEWART lineage is a John McConnell STEWART b. 1853 Fayette Co, AL; who had a daughter Mable Clements STEWART b 1881 Fayette Co., AL.) - One last offering to check the ownership history of his land in Northport (Range/Township/Section history). Sometimes the seller and the purchasers were allied, sometimes not;... sometimes vaguely connected (perhaps in the militia together - he would have been old enough to be in the 1836 Seminole problem set). Did his dad belong to the Tuscaloosa Militia Regiment? (Alabama ADAH in Montgomery, militia cards)? Hope I haven't bored you. These are data points that may help speed up in your quest to discern. Looking forward to the answers to the questions above :-) Dick Stewart 01 August 2006 -=-==-=-=- Hi... His birth year appears to be 1812. Thanks, Bev W. =-=-=-==- when do you estimate his birth year? Dick Stewart =--=-== Hi... Does anyone on the list connect to the family of John C. Clements? I understand that he had a fairly large property in or near Northport. There is a little confusion in the census records. Most state that he was born in Alabama, but the 1870 census seems to state that his birthplace was Tenn. I would like to know for sure or if there is a family tie in Tenn. Thanks, Bev W.

    1. Re: [LCT] SMITH family reunion
    2. Why, Carmen, just jog on up to Stevenson AL and meet some SMITHs...lol. I remember corresponding with you about DD. We never did decide what his second initial D stood for, did we? And I read a recent post by someone that his wife was buried at the State Line Cem with him. But DD's dau-n-law always told my hubby's g'ma that she died visiting a daughter in Alabama and they couldn't get the body back, so buried her there. Do you know of DD & wife having a dau who might have lived in AL? Anyhoo, gotta get back to work! heheh. JOY ---- Carmen Forbes <[email protected]> wrote: > Joy: My ancestor was David D. 3. I love FamilySearch.org. Sometimes I stay on that one for hours. I also get on RootsWeb a lot. I have used findagrave and like it. Ancestor.com is not free is it? I have not heard of linkpendium.com and raogh.org but will to see what. Thanks.
