John W. Whitt was, indeed, married three times. By his first marriage to Jane Smith, he had no children. I have no further info on her. By his 2nd marriage to Susan Neal, he had four children: William Anderson, Louisa, John Wesley and Lucy Ann. By his third wife Mary (Pollie) Merrill, he had twelve children: Calline, Garrett Wilson, David Watson, Edward D., James Franklin, William W., Simeon E., Andrew Jackson, Olliva, George Sterling, Mariah Susan, Horace Lee. The above Lucy Ann and Calline were my ancestors. Ann, What are the names of the brothers? I don't know if there is a connection, but I have a Jane SMITH who married John Watson WHITT, they had two children, Lucy Ann WHITT born 28 Feb 1843 and John Wesley WHITT born about 1844, I don't know the birth, marriage or death date of my Jane SMITH, her husband John married a second time to Mary MERRELL and a third time to Susan NEAL. I don't have any further information on Jane other than they lived in the Lincoln/Giles area. Lucy Ann WHITT HEADRICKS is buried at Elliott Cemetery in Giles and John Watson WHITT is buried at Malone Cemetery in Limestone. Let me know if you have any lines to connect the dots..... S-K Publications, PO Box 8173, Wichita KS has published The 1850 LCT Census in a two volume edition. It has photo copies of the actual census pages with an index. Editor was Dr. John F. Schunk I believe it was purchased from Sistler. Bob Tallman
The problem with Sistler's 1850 LCT census book is that it does not have all the notations that Mrs. Lewter spent days and hours collecting. She added the dates of marriages and deaths where possible. She added marriage dates if a daughter or son and spouses were living in the HH. She added much info that one would have to pay a researcher to collect at the LCT Vitals Dept. I treasure my book. I bought mine from her husband after her death. If there is anyone out there who knows this Lewter family's adult children, please ask them if there are any of their mother's books left for sale. I am trying to determine if the John H Scott who married Susan Ann George in 1859 in Lincoln County TN is the same John H Harris who married Mary Ann Chesser in Lincoln County TN in 1851. John H Scott was the son of Wilson Scott and Altoney Harris. In the 1850 census he is in the household of Altoney and is age 19. On the annotated 1850 census, a wonderful resource, it states John married Susan George in 1859. However it goes on to say he died in 1859. That cannot be correct since he is in the 1870 Lincoln County census as Jno H Scott age 40 with wife Susan and children the oldest of which is age 9. John and Susan also appear in the 1880 Lincoln County census. I wonder if it was John's wife Mary Ann Chesser who died in 1859 and he remarried soon after her death. Any help much appreciated. Will share the info I have on the Wilson Scott family. Judy
Charlie, My gg-grandparents , John H. Chapman and Demaris L. Shelton Chapman , lived in the area from the late 1850's until the death of John in 1870. John H. and 2 children are buried in a cemetery in Mulberry. Demaris was a music teacher at the Academy. We have copies of the letters they wrote back to the Chapman family in Huntsville, Yadkin County, North Carolina that covers this time frame. The originals are archived in North Carolina. Demaris had attended the Greensboro Female Academy that was started by their Methodist Episcopal Church. A history of the Greensboro Female Academy: http://museum.gborocollege.edu/beyondbooks_briefhistory.htm My sister and I will answer whatever questions we can for you. John was a furniture maker but his health was very poor before the War even started so we do not think he served. From the letters it would appear neither John nor Demaris were getting much mail from other family. My sister's e-mail, Kathryn Mereness, [email protected] After John's death, Demaris took the 2 surviving children, Richard Thomas and Annie Barnett Chapman, to Covington, Tipton County, Tennessee to live near her brother. This generation of Sheltons were from Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina though Demaris and most of her siblings were born in Stokes Co., NC. Her parents were from Louisa County, Virginia. We would love to know how in the world they chose to come to Lincoln Co since the few years previous they lived in Monticello, Drew Co., Arkansas with Demaris' brother, Joseph Shelton and his wife , Nancy Jane Gillespie. We do have a picture of John H. Chapman and the 2 children that lived through the war and to adulthood. I'm sorry I have none of Demaris to offer to you. If you publish your research I would like some copies. Hope you get more response to your query. Marie Reedy Archive. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Charles O. Are you talking about the two story brick house on the opposite side of the Cane Creek farm? If so I think a Jobe lives there now. There are three houses between Boohshill-Petersburg Road and Cane Creek that have fascinated me since I was a child. One is the Cane Creek Farm house, the other is the house I mentioned and the third is the frame house on the same side as the Cane Creek farm. Back in the 50's a family named Foote lived there. I am interested in knowing the history of that house. A fourth house fasinates me--it is on Lewisburg Highway across from the old Morgan School. Can anybody tell me anything about these three houses? Old houses have always held a fascination for me. I did not know that Turkey was related to the Greer family. Hi Joyce I have read that book -Eleanor had it she had bought it at Turkey Warrens antique store at Petersburg --Turkey's family was related to the Greer family. I wish I knew if Mr. Murray was still alive but I have not seen an obit but I do not always read the obits from Winchester --I assume he would have been put in the Marshall Co. paper but he was never from there but because of Eleanor they most likely would have sent it to the Marshall Co. Newspaper --They were sold to the same folks who own the Shelbyville Newspaper and in the change over they did not publish the obit. As best I could ever determine the house of the Edmonsons in the newspaper was the big brick home on the right just after the Boonshill RD. The old road came through Petersburg along the railroad track and the train stopped a let him off, On down on the left is the Cane Creek farm which is the farm of the Smythe -Mrs Smythe was a Greer and that was her share of the Property. I have been meaning to write you since you last wrote but somehow I do not get around to it any more I wanted to tell you I use the Money program instead of Quickerns neither of them are set up for folks who have CD and interst instead of Stocks -- Today is my son's 54--birthday seems impossible to think of it being that long --take care frances
