Hi everyone, I want to remind everyone that the Lawrence County Genealogical Society has our tax exempt status from the IRS and our postal permit. In order to be certain that you receive your journal, we must have your exact address and zip code, including the extra 4 digits if they were not included in your application to become a member. If you move or change your address for any reason, please notify us so we can make the changes in our computer database. With this non-profit permit we will be mailing 3rd class, so it will take a little longer for the journal to reach you each quarter, but will save the society several hundred dollars a year in postage fees. I am researching Garner but the only place I know that mine was in was Hickman & Wayne Co. Co. Her name was Mary Jane Smith Garner who married Josiah Henderson Smith. Kathy, Having been unable to find obits for some of our family, I appreciate the clue you gave for searching the "gossip" columns. My own 93 year old aunt still writes a similar column in Ovid Idaho. You have given me a new place to search on the next trip to Lawrenceburg. Linda

Hi, After my post yesterday answering a question concerning what newspapers are available for Lawrence County, several people have emailed to ask if these are online. Sorry to say that they are not. It would take many years to read through all the microfilm, type and put online. We just do not have that kind of time or staff. In order to research in these newspapers, you have several options. You can come to Lawrence County and view the newspapers yourself; we can perform research in them for you at $5 an hour plus 25 cents per page and postage; you can view them at the TN State Library and Archives; or you can order copies through your library's interlibrary loan program. Just keep in mind that finding an obituary in newspapers before 1900 would just be a stroke of luck. Very seldom have I found any. You had to be very prominent to have a few paragraphs. Most newspapers required payment of so much per inch of type set. Even up until the 1950's or 1960's you won't find an obit. for every person who died. Something you might find in the early 1900's is your ancestors death mentioned in each community's "gossip" column. Just about every community had a regular column that often told of a birth, death, marriage, and of course the usual so and so visited so and so. Hi, If you are new to this list and do not know about the Lawrence County Genealogical Society, you might want to join. Membership is only $10 for 1 year or $25 for 1 year sustaining membership (which gives us a little more money to cover the cost of printing and postage. The check or money order can be mailed to Lawrence County Genealogical Society, 218 N. Military Ave., Suite B-1, Lawrenceburg, TN 38464. Also send name, address, email address, and family surnames researching. Membership includes a quarterly journal that contains family histories (many that are submitted by our members); queries; book reviews on books donated to the archives pertaining to Lawrence County (or surrounding counties) concerning families or history; original records - wills, tax lists, births and deaths, index to names on early plat maps, etc.; old pictures of families, buildings or places; minutes of the society's meetings; and much more. Our society's year runs from Sept. of one year through Aug. of the following year. A notice is printed in our June journal reminding about renewal. We hold meetings the third Sat. in September, 1st Sat. in Dec., and 3rd Sat. in March. The meeting in June is replaced by a Family History Fair which has been very successful in the past years. The past three years the fair has been on the 3rd Sat. in June, but this year has been changed to the 4th Sat. in June. Many people requested this change in order to move the fair from Father's Day weekend. We also have people from different fields of genealogy to present programs at each meeting. Query submissions by members are free, but non-members can also submit queries for $2.00 each query. We prefer they be no longer than 100 words; two may be submitted by each person. These will be included in our March issue on a first come basis; but if there are too many queries for this issue, they will be included in the June issue. Queries can be (and we prefer them to be) emailed to lcarchives@lorettotel.net. This means I will only have to do any editing or reformating necessary, and saves me a lot of time by not having to retype them. If you are a non-member emailing a query, the $2.00 fee must be received before the end of February in order to be included. Hi Everybody, I have two questions I hope somebody can help me with: 1. My grandmother, Ella Nancy Duncan Davis, born 1891 was a teacher. She always told me she taught in a one-room schoolhouse. We still have her bell. I have never been able to find the schoolhouse name or location. Does anyone have any idea how I could find this info? 2. I am attempting to find a newspaper in Lawrence county 1865-66. I have some names from TSLA but they didn't print in this time period. Did anyone print during this time period? There is a Family History Center in Florence, AL at the Church there. The address is 1828 Broadway Blvd, Florence AL 35631. Telephone No. (256) 766-5553. I have not been there but know people who have. It is staffed by volunteers and not open every day, so you need to call them for current hours.
