    1. [TNLAWREN] Family History Fair
    2. Lawrence County Archives
    3. Hi everyone, Once again it is time for our The Lawrence County Genealogical Society's Annual Family History Fair Saturday, June 23th (this is our 4th year). The fair will be held at the Lawrence County High School located on Springer Road from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We always have many people from all across the United States in attendance. Some reserve tables to display their research or books for sell, while others browse from table to table in hopes of finding a researcher working on the same line as they are. So, plan to come with your charts, notebooks, pictures, etc. and join the fun. If you would like to reserve a table, please contact me at lcarchives@lorettotel.net. Or you can visit the society's web site at http://web.infoave.net/~lcarchives/lcgs.htm, scan down to the Family History Fair Reservation link, and print out a form to mail to the society. Tables are free, but we need you to register in order to know how many tables to set up. Admission to the fair is $1 per person. If you are willing to volunteer to work at the admission table, copy machine, society table, help with set up and take down, or any of the various other positions, please contact me. If you live out of state, you can still help. Several of our volunteers last year were from out of county or out of state. We can always find something for you to do. It is only through willing volunteers that we will be able to keep this event going. Thanks. Kathy Niedergeses

    3. Janet Snider, I don't have any information on Mattie Ella Griffin born 1889. She could be in the family of Bluford Griffin. My family was James Cornelius Griffin born 1846, His sons (twins) were James Avery Griffin and Irvin Cornelius Griffin born 1867 in Lawrence Co. Their sister was Ida Elizabeth Griffin. They also had a half brother and sister named McMasters. They moved to Texas when they were young. Augusta Slagle

    3. Hi everyone, Reita Burress has been working hard on creating a new webpage for the Lawrence County Archives and the Lawrence County Genealogical Society. It is now ready for you to preview and can be found at the same url as before http://web.infoave.net/~lcarchives/archives.htm It still has a few links that are not working properly, but certainly looks good. In the next week or so, Reita will be working on getting all the bugs out and changing a few things. So, be sure to check it out and let Reita and the archives know what you think. If you have any suggestions feel free to tell us. Also, if you have a webpage that deals with ancestors from Lawrence County or Lawrence County History, we will be glad to provide a link from our page to yours. Doug Pollock also deserves a big thank you for getting Reita started on using Front Page and giving some instructions to us. Almost forgot - KEEP THOSE ZIP CODES COMING! 1. [TNLAWREN] Zip code + 4 digits
    2. Lawrence County Archives
    3. Hi everyone, I want to thank everyone who has emailed or otherwise sent their zip codes plus the extra 4 digits. PLEASE, if you are a member of the Lawrence County Genealogical Society, send us the last four digits of your extended zip code. Since we are using a mailing permit now, we need these so we don't have to go to the post office website on the internet and type in the address of every member to find these ourself. The journals will be mailed tomorrow morning. The time it takes for them to arrive at your mailbox will take longer with a mailing permit, but will save the society almost $200 every quarter in postage! This in turn will insure that the dues remain at the low price of $10 for one year membership. Thanks Kathy Niedergeses, Director Lawrence County Archives

    1. [TNLAWREN] Genealogy Scams-from another list!
    2. Genealogy scams in general: Genealogical Web Site Watchdog (only for online scams) at: http://www.ancestordetective.com/watchdog.htm The National Genealogical Society's Consumer Protection Committee is quite active at keeping an eye on the various scams, including both online and offline fraudsters. If you have a question about a particular company's services, you can contact the NGS Consumer Protection Committee via traditional mail at: National Genealogical Society's Consumer Protection Committee, at 4527 17th Street North, Arlington, VA 22207- 2399. The committee also maintains Web pages at: http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/comconsumer.htm and at: http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/comconsumerpsst.htm. However, those pages do not mention specific companies. Cyndi's List has a section for genealogy myths, hoaxes and scams at: http://www.cyndislist.com/myths.htm Specific companies: I have received e-mail about the following companies; all have been mentioned as having questionable services. I have listed URLs where you can obtain further information: Family Discovery.com - an online Web site that claims to have "the Web's most versatile Award Winning collection of genealogical databases." However, they don't mention the "award" they received from the Better Business Bureau! The Bureau says, "Based on BBB files, this company has an unsatisfactory record with the Bureau due to unanswered complaint(s)." Family Discovery.com charges $59.99 for a one- year subscription. Most of the same information is available elsewhere on the Web at no charge. In fact, many of the links on FamilyDiscovery.com simply take you to free Web sites. You can obtain the same information at no cost by using one of the free search engines. Details are available on the Genealogical Web Site Watchdog site at: http://www.ancestordetective.com/watchdog.htm#Warning. There is an Anti-FamilyDiscovery.com newsletter at: http://compuright.dyndns.org/familydiscovery/ The xxx Family Yearbook - In this case, substitute your last name for the "xxx." For instance, an advertisement sent to a person named Smith would be advertising The Smith Family Yearbook while someone named Clark would receive an advertisement for The Clark Family Yearbook. These "yearbooks" claim to have genealogy information. However, those who purchase the "products" are usually disappointed. The producing company has several business names; for example, you can find them listed as Mountain West News Service or as the Mountain Pacific News Service. They also may appear as an organizational name, such as "The Smith Family Yearbook." However, all these "companies" have the same address: 1181 S. Parker Road, #105, Denver, CO 80231. The Better Business Bureau lists the parent company as MORPHCORP. The News Herald of Panama City, Florida has an article about these "products" at: http://www.newsherald.com/articles/2000/04/16/tp041600.htm Family Tree House - I wrote about this company in the October 31, 1998 edition of this newsletter. The company gives an appearance of a Web site that offers genealogy services. In fact, it does not appear to sell anything. However, the same company advertises on another Web site with an offer to sell personal information obtained from genealogists who visit the Family Tree House site. You innocently enter personal information about yourself on Family Tree House and then operators of the site sell your personal information to bulk mail companies. Information for sale includes name, address, e-mail address and more. You can read that article at: http://ancestordetective.com/watchdog.htm#sells The Historical Research Center (HRC) International, Inc. sells "family histories" and coats of arms. Information about the true value of these products can be found on the Genealogical Web Site Watchdog site at: http://www.ancestordetective.com/watchdog.htm#Coats. Keep in mind that this company sells franchises. A few years ago they were listed as one of the top 30 fastest growing franchises in America. You may find their products being sold by other companies who purchase franchises. One such company is Names.com, but apparently there are many others as well. The International Hall of Names in Canada also sells "family histories" and coats of arms. They are also mentioned on the Genealogical Web Site Watchdog site at: http://www.ancestordetective.com/watchdog.htm#Coats. I would caution anyone to be careful about "family coats of arms." In fact, in England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and most of western Europe, there really is no such thing as a family coat of arms. In those countries, arms have always been awarded to individuals, not to families. Displaying a coat of arms that you are not authorized to use is a form of identity theft, even if you do happen to have the same last name as the original grantee. Any company offering to sell you a copy of "your family's coat of arms" is selling a bogus product. If you believe you have been the victim of a genealogy scam, you can do something about it! If you purchased products or services from the above companies or any others that you feel did not live up to advertised claims, demand a refund! If your money is not returned within 30 days or so from a U.S. company, submit a complaint to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Bureau of Consumer Protection at: https://rn.ftc.gov/dod/wsolcq$.startup?Z_ORG_CODE=PU01. A few letters of inquiry from the federal government will send a strong message to the people who produce products or services of questionable value. If a Canadian company is involved, you can register a complaint at: http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/SSG/ct01250e.html. You also might want to warn other genealogists and tell them of your experiences. You can post a message to others in the "Scams and Fraud" section of CompuServe's Genealogy Techniques Forum message board. 2. This is an English mapping site but you can get any country by clicking on "Maps & Directions' and then "World Maps' on the far top right. It even has a "sounds like" feature that comes up when they don't find your exact spelling. They print very well too, even though I did not, at first, see the "printer friendly" button! I copied and pasted on a letter form....will try the button next time! Hope this helps someone. Carleen

    3. Hi, I have been asked by a researcher to post the address again of where to send your membership dues to the Lawrence County Genealogical Society and the advantages to members that live in other states. The address is Lawrence County Genealogical Society, 218 N. Military Ave., Suite B-1, Lawrenceburg, TN 38464. Membership is $10 for one year, $25 for one year sustaining membership, and $100 for lifetime. If you do not live in Lawrence County or in Tennessee, this is a great way to find information on your ancestors or to get in touch with someone else researching on the same line. Each issue of our journals contains the history of one or more families, either written by one of our board or officers, or by a member (or non-member) of the society who wishes to write an article on the family they are researching. We also include original records such as transcription of early wills, tax lists, Civil War pensioners, and many other records as we transcribe them. Also included are book reviews on the latest books donated to the local archives or library on Lawrence County families or Lawrence County history. Queries submitted by members and non-members often are a good source of finding another researcher working on the same family names as you. Usually an How Do I.....article is included on how to find information in a particular record group, etc. We have a family history fair annually in June; this year June 23. Members and non-members from all across the United States can reserve tables free to display their research and pictures, while others prefer to browse the tables in hopes of finding a long lost ancestor connection. In the past, many who have attended came away with new info and pictures. The society has an on-going First Families of Lawrence Co., TN program. There are two categories - 1) Anyone who can prove their ancestor was in Lawrence Co. between 1818-1850; 2) For those who can prove their ancestor was in Lawrence Co., TN between 1851-1900. Your ancestor may not have stayed long, stayed for many years, or all his life. If he was in Lawrence County and you have positive proof of this fact and of every generation from you back to this ancestor, you can receive a certificate for $10. These applications and their proof are added for our family file folders. Kathy Niedergeses
