My gggg grandfather Abijah RICE was born about 1797 in Cocke Co., TN, according to his War of 1812 service record. He was in Middle TN by 1813, and enlisted in KY in April that year in the 24th US Reg. Inf. (made up of men from TN and headquartered in Nashville) under Capt. J. A. Rogers. The NARA cannot find the muster rolls for the 24th US Reg. Inf.; I was hoping I might that Abijah had enlisted along with a family member on the same date. He later was in the First US Rifles under Capt. Edw. Wadsworth. I believe that Abijah had a brother named Jehu who was enumerated in Sumner Co. in 1820; he later went to Southern IL (Hamilton and Franklin Cos.) Abijah and Jehu were 1/2 Cherokee, and Jehu's daughter Rhoda is lsited on the Cherokee Emigration Rolls in 1832 (according to a descendant.) The names Abijah and Jehu are both Biblical, names of kings of Israel. In June of 1817, he married Jaley Ann BROWN in Wilson Co., TN. By 1819, according to circuit court records, they had gone on to MO Territory, settling in the areas of New Madrid and Cape Girardeau Cos. They always settled in known Indian camps, first one near present day Bloomfield, MO (a Shawnee/Delaware/Cherokee camp under Chief Wahepalathy) and then in Chilletecaux, named for the Delaware Chiefwho headed the village, near present day Kennett, MO. In 1837, 300 hundred Indians and only 2 white families were living in this village. My ancestors considered themselves Indian. Abijah and Jaley had children: William, b. @ 1816; James Pascal (my ggg grandfather), b. @ 1818; Margaret J.; Elizabeth Bellona; and Susan or Susannah M. (either Mary or Martha). Margaret J. married Henry L. JONES; Elizabeth B. married Sam HECTOR; Susan married Benjamin S. ENLOW. Abijah and Jaley wnet their separate ways about 1837, when she had a child by a full blooded Indian named John EAST. Abijah and his oldest son William are enumerated in Cedar Co., MO, in 1850, Newton Co., MO, in 1860, and William and his family only (presumably Abijah died between 1860 and 1870, in either Newton Co., MO, or Neosho, KS) in 1870 in Wilson Co., KS. There is some evidence that Abijah and William moved away from Jaley and the other children after 1832, and went to Western ARK or NE Indian Territory. A marriage for an Abiher REECE [sic] has been found in the 1830's in Crawford Co., ARK. Quite possibly, Abijah continued to move west with the Cherokee Old Settlers. I cannot find him in 1840 on any census. His son Pascal, my ggg grandfather, is living in McCracken Co., KY, in 1840 (now Ballard Co., KY). In 1850, he and wife Sarah (according to family history, known as WENOKIE) and their children are in Jefferson Co., IL. By 1860, they are back in Mississippi Co., ARK. 1870 on they are in the area of Hornersville, Dunklin Co., MO. Jaley was the daughter of Leonard BROWN (possibly James Leonard BROWN) and an Indian woman named WATHACAPEE. No idea what tribe; possibly Saponi/Tutelo as they were from VA. Guion Miller applications say Cherokee, but I have my suspicions. Jaley's brother Stephen (who served as bondsman for her marriage) is in Lawrence Co., TN in 1820 (two houses from a James BROWN old enough to be his father and Stephen's father-in-law Elias CRANFORD); Lauderdale Co, AL in 1830 (next to father in law Elias CRANFORD and undoubtedly a brother named Leonard BROWN); Wayne Co., TN, in 1840; Tishomingo Co., MS in 1845; Searcy and Izard Cos., ARK, 1850 on. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Doug Powers --------------31871A080576822F0FE331A9--
Good Morning Folks, I am now back on-line but later than anticipated. When we returned from our trip, I had a computer issue to deal with. Seems everything is fine now and that the mail list has not experienced any problems that I am aware of. No congratulations were necessary but we appreciate those we received. Everyone is fine. Thanks. If you have experienced any problem in the past two weeks please communicate with me and I will make an effort to resolve anything that still exists. Hi, O.K. everyone, I am really beginning to get worried about the family history fair scheduled for Sat. June 23rd at the Lawrence County High School in Lawrenceburg. In the past by this time, we have always had about 20 tables reserved and many people emailing for info and directions to the fair. This year there has not been very much response. PLEASE, if you are planning to attend the fair or need to reserve a table to display your charts, family info, pictures, etc., email or call the society so we will know all our hard work is going to benefit researchers across the country. email - lcarchives@lorettotel.net Phone - 931-766-1576 Each year in the past, we have had from 100 to 150 in attendance with many people making connections with researchers working on the same family line they are. This is a great way to gain valuable information and pictures of your ancestor. For something new this year we have added the society's "How Do I..." table. At least one member of the society will be present at all times to offer suggestions to researchers who have hit a brick wall and advise those who are just beginning their search. We will also be able to help you on subjects such as how to get needed info from the Masons, TN vital records, census that have not been released, researching at the Lawrence County Archives, how to become a member of the DAR, trace Cherokee ancestry, and many other topics. PLEASE plan now to attend and join in the fun. Kathy Niedergeses, Director Lawrence County Archives & LCGS Board Member
A Confederate memorial service will take place June 3rd at 1:30 P.M. to honor 43 previously unknown Confederate soldiers buried in the Chestnut Grove Cemetery. These southern soldiers died during and after the battle at Anthony's Hill located south of Pulaski, TN. The Christmas day battle in 1864 was fought between Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest's rearguard troops and the Union Army. Official records indicate 16 Confederates died with approximately 40 wounded. Local citizen's of Anthony Hill buried the Confederate dead and nursed the wounded. Later, many wounded soldiers succumbed to their injuries with 27 men presently unknown. Members of Chestnut Grove Methodist Church, chartered in 1859, cared for their graves and collectively referred to them as "the old Confederates" until the local camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans placed new headstones with assistance from the 4th District office of U.S. Rep. Van Hilleary. The Chestnut Grove Methodist Church has combined the memorial service with their annual decoration day. Church service will be at 11:00 A.M. followed by the "traditional dinner on the ground" in their fellowship hall. All re-enactors and interested guests are invited to attend the church service and the food prepared by church members. After dinner, Confederate re-enactors and period dressed civilians will lead a short walk from the church to the cemetery. The program includes short historical summaries by Heath Matthews and Vickie Rumble before the keynote address by Tim Morrison. Bobby Horton will perform the musical portion of the program followed by Dr. Michael Bradley's oral interpretation of his poem, "I Am Their Flag." Finally, Tim Burgess will read the Confederate names between alternating volleys of cannon and musket fire. Roster of soldiers buried after the battle: Obadiah Alford, Thomas L. Bamberg, Timothy L. Barham, Michael M. Bryant, Samuel B. Day, John W. Holloway, John T. Holt, Dorsey Hudson, David A. Jackson, Jr., James M. McClure, Samuel H. Moore, George W. Smith, William Strickland, J.W. Tillman, Henry W. Watkins, Alexander Whitaker. To reach the cemetery from Lawrence County travel Fall River Road into Giles County. Chestnut Grove Road will be on your left just a short distance before Fall River Road ends at Minor Hill Road (Highway 11). The church is on Fall River Rd. about 100 yards before you get to Chestnut Grove Rd.; the cemetery is on Chestnut Grove Rd. Kathy Niedergeses
Is anyone working on these familes in the Lawrence/Giles county area? Just found out my great grandmother was not Sarah Allen, but was actually Sarah Ann Allie. Married Henry Brashears circa 1886-89. Any help appreciated on this family. I was told Sarah was indian decent and that her family raised horses, also she was either disowned or shunned by her family for marrying Henry. thanks in advance, Cheryl in texas

Hi everyone, It will soon be time for the Lawrence County Genealogical Society's 4th Annual Family History Fair to be held Saturday, June 23, 2001, at the Lawrence County High School. The fair will be from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and admission is $1 per person. Each year we have had a tremendous turn out of people from all across the United States. The main purpose of this fair is to try to put families who are researching on the same surname in touch with each other so they can share info. Many people reserve tables and display their genealogy material, while many other people simply attend in hopes of finding a long lost relative - dead or alive. We also have several vendors; most are local, but some are from other counties and states. If you wish to reserve a table to display your charts, books, pictures, etc., or if you have books for sell, please email your name, address and a brief description of what you will be bringing. There is no charge for reserving a table, we just need to know how many tables to set up. A copy machine will be available for making copies. So, plan now to attend. Also, if you are willing to help with setup, take down or during the fair, please let me know. Even if you live out of state, you can still help for an hour or two. I will gladly email directions to anyone who plans to attend, but does not know where the high school is located. Kathy Niedergeses, Director Lawrence County Archives

Hi everyone, This is the last call for queries for the Summer issue of the Lawrence County Genealogical Society's journal. Our editor wants to finish the layout early, so everything is in place except for queries. Queries are free to society members and $2 for non-members. We prefer you email the queries, which save typing time. If you are not a member and want to place a query, you can still email the query and send the money by snail mail. If you prefer to mail them, the address is Lawrence County Genealogical Society, 218 N. Military Ave., Suite B-1, Lawrenceburg, TN 38464. We prefer they be no longer than 100 words; two may be submitted by each person. They will appear in our journal on a first come basis; but if there are too many queries for this issue, they will be included in the Fall issue. If you are not a member of our society and would like to become a member, you can contact the society at lcarchives@lorettotel.net. Dues are only $10 for one year and include 4 issues of our journal packed full of family histories, wills, tax lists, etc., pictures, queries, book reviews, and much more. Kathy Niedergeses, Director Lawrence County Archives
Hi everyone, We have a few new books at the archives, some are for sell, others just for researchers to use on-site. Robert Samuel Brashears and Some Descendants in TN and KY, by Charles Brashear; c2001. This is Volume 3 in a series of books on the descendants of Robert and Benois Brasseur and deals with the family of Robert Samuel Brashear, the son of Robert C. and Charity Dowell Brashear. Robert Samuel was born in Maryland in 1731 and is referred to as "The Rolling Stone," having lived in various places in MD, NC and TN. He married Phoebe Hicks in 1754, and to this union were born eleven children - Phillip, Margaret, Isaac, Samuel, Margaret (Peggy), Phoebe, Rebeccah, Nancy, Elizabeth, and Basil. In 1794, they moved to the area that is now Roane County, TN. Some of the descendants stayed in Roane County, while others moved to Giles and Lawrence Counties in TN, KY, AR, and TX. This volume, along with the first two, can be purchased from Charles Brashear, P.O. Box 38, Clearlake Oaks, CA 95423. Or he can be reached by email at brashear@mail.sdsu.edu. The book was donated by Jack & Pat McDonald of TX Bobby Alford has three new volumes of his Histories of Lawrence County series. Volumes 4, 5 and 6 are a compilation of history from many sources - largely old newspapers, but some material by other writers over the years, historical society material, and material compiled for the 200th Anniversay of Tennessee's statehood. They contain a wealth of information on communities, people, what life was like during the earlier years, obituaries, industries, agriculture, education, roads, railroads, and much more. These books can be purchased from the archives, which can be contacted at their email address - lcarchives@lorettotel.net Josephine Pickard has a new book containing the obituaries that appeared in Lawrence County newspapers for the years 1999-2000. These obituaries contain valuable information and the book is indexed by name of deceased. It can also be purchased from the archives. The McLean Family of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, by Joy McLean Hendrix. Ephriam McLean, Sr. and his brother Charles traveled from Scotland to America around 1748-1750. Ephriam first settled in PA, then migrated to NC, SC, KY, and then to TN where he lived first with his family in Davidson Co., then Maury and Lawrence. Ephriam, Sr. married Elizabeth Davidson and they had twelve children - John, Margaret, Ephriam Jr., George, Jane, Charles, William, Samuel, James, Alney, John D., and Robert D. Ephriam, Elizabeth and some of the children returned to Kentucky where Ephriam and Elizabeth later died. Samuel McLean had 9 children, but, although the author touches on many of these, this history deals mostly with the descendants of his son Samuel D. McLean and one of his children, John Lilburn McLean, who is the authors ancestor. The book also contains many old pictures of the McLean family. If anyone is publishing a book on their family lines in Lawrence and related counties or other material dealing with the area, the archives welcomes donations of books. Kathy Niedergeses, Director Lawrence County Archives
Hello Everyone, Can anyone tell me what church was in Laurel Hill about 1866? My gggrandfather (Jessee Williams) worked at the Laurel Hill Mill and I was wondering where the family worshipped or if the area was large enough to have a few churches? Thanks for your help. Bonnie
I am looking for information on my gg grandfather, Richard Berry ADAMS. He was born about 1828 in TN, but I have no idea where, or any other information about his ancestry. By 1850 he was living in Dallas County, AL along with a couple of other ADAMS households where the head was TN born; James (born about 1806), John (born about 1829), and F. G. (born about 1813). Richard Berry ADAMS had the following children: Joseph William Amanda John Thomas Sarah J Margaret A Mary E Eliza A Minnie M Since Franklin, Lawrence, Lincoln, and Wayne Counties all border AL, I am starting my search there, hoping someone may recognize some of these names and be able to share information. I haven't found "Berry" to be a very common name, so I am thinking it must be a family name of some type. I would appreciate any information and will be more than willing to share what I have on the Richard Berry ADAMS line. Barry Fox Greenville, SC
