    1. [TNLAWREN-L] microfilm reader
    2. Lawrence County Archives
    3. Hi everyone, We are so thrilled at the archives. After many years of begging the county for the money, we finally got a microfilm reader. We got a grant from the "great" State of Tennessee for $5,000, the county coughed up $2,000, and the rest came from a few generous donations. While we were getting one we decided to get the cadillac instead of the old ford, so have one that prints to a laser printer. Since I had been purcashing a few rolls of microfilm just incase we ever got a reader, we already have 117 rolls of film - marriages to 1996; wills, estate settlements, etc. to 1996; surveyors and entry takers books to 1849; deeds thru 1836; land grant plats; chancery court minutes thru 1906; tax books in varying years from 1868-1973; all the records that we have originals of at the archives; and census 1900-1920 for Lawrence, 1900-1910 for Lewis, 1900 Lincoln, 1910 Lauderdale. I will hopefully have money left from our budget at the end of next June to purchase more rolls. Of course, we welcome any donations to go toward the purchase of more microfilm. 1. [TNLAWREN-L] Ratliff family in Lawrence Co mid-1800s
    2. Hello Listers, I've only been a member of this list for a few weeks now. I've been patiently waiting to see if someone mentioned the Lawrence County family I was searching for more information on -- they haven't, so here goes: Elam Ratliff, b 7/3/1778 in Randolph Co, NC, m (?) in 1810 in Lenoir Co, NC, d 7/2/1855 in Lawrence Co, TN, bur in Pleasant Gardens Cemetery, Lawrence Co, TN. Family history has it that Mrs. Ratliff might have been Native American, but it's unsubstantiated. Elam was born RATCLIFF, but moved all of his family to Lawrence Co, TN, and changed his surname spelling to RATLIFF. Horse thief, maybe? Anyway, all of his children were born in NC before he moved to TN. The children were: 1. Malinda Ratliff, b 7/3/1821, Onslow Co, NC, m Samuel Howard, 2/13/1845 in Lawrence Co, TN 2. Barbary Ratliff, b 9/29/1822, Onslow Co, NC, m Samuel Howard, 12/5/1840 in Lawrence Co, TN, d 1844 in Lawrence Co, TN 3. *Zacheus Ratliff, b 7/16/1824, Onslow Co, NC, m Martha Margaret Underwood 2/10/1848 in Lawrence Co, AR, d 9/3/1890 in Smithville, Lawrence Co, AR 4. Aaron Owen Ratliff, b 11/7/1825, Onslow Co, NC, m Patience L. Ashmore, 8/29/1858, in Lawrence Co, TN, d 4/10/1892 in Lawrence Co, TN 5. Obediah Ratliff, b 6/30/1827, Onslow Co, NC, m Susanna E. Kendrick, 12/3/1849 in Lawrence Co, TN, d 10/22/1884 in TN 6. Mordica Ratliff, b 11/15/1828, in Onslow Co, NC, m Rebecca J. (?) -- I have this info in another place but can't find it! He went to Arkansas with Zacheus and died there leaving Zack the guardian for his 3 or 4 minor children. 7. Catherine Ratliff, b 8/11/1830, in Onslow Co, NC, m (1) Isaac H. Eslick, on 5/29/1864, in Lincoln Co, TN, m (2) William Williams, 6/8/1871, in Fayetteville, Lincoln Co, TN 8. Irena Ratliff, b 9/4/1832, in Onslow Co, NC, m W. Johnson in 1850 in Massack Co, IL (only yankee I can find that we married)! Just kidding! Do any of these Ratliffs look familiar to anyone out there searching for ancestors? 3. Hi everyone, The Summer issue of the Lawrence County Genealogical Society's journal was mailed yesterday. We are now accepting queries for the Winter issue - free to members and $2.00 to non-members. If you are a member, the queries can be emailed to the archives (means less typing for me this way) or sent by regular mail if you are a non-member to Lawrence County Genealogical Society, 218 N. Military Ave., Suite B-1, Lawrenceburg, TN 38464. We also welcome articles, pictures, bible records, etc. submitted by members or non-members for publication in our journal. We have several people who have sent us material lately, which is wonderful - less work for me in this area also. (I'm not lazy, just over worked!) Since our society's year runs from Sept. 1 of each year through Aug. 31 of the following year, membership fees are now due in order for you to continue receiving our journal. The dues are $10 for one year, $25 for one year sustaining, and $100 for lifetime. You can mail your check or money order to the address listed above. Don't forget about our society meeting the third Saturday in September at the Lawrence County Public Library. We are working on plans for a program now, and will let everyone know as soon as we have all the details worked out. Kathy Niedergeses, Director Lawrence County Archives

    3. I'm looking for descendants of Balzora Quillen or James F Quillen, brother and sister. They are the children of William Quillen, son of Charles D. In 1860, they are living in Lauderdale County (around the Greenhill area), then the family appears in Lawrence Co. in 1870 but there is NO mention of James F. Balzora is 14 attending school, and James would have been 12. Did he die between 1860-1870?? Or he with relatives?? Does anyone else have anything on this line or any of the lines associated with William's siblings??They are as follows: 1) Jasper -- b. abt 1832 2) Isilla --b. abt 1834 3) Timothy Allen --b. abt 1836 m. Sarah Catherine (Katie) Denton 1863 Tuscumbia, Colbert Co. AL 4) John P / John T. --b abt 1838 5) Mary C --b. abt 1840 6) Chesley M --b. abt 1842 My ancestor was child #8 , George Carroll-- b 4 Dec 1854. We have no records of any other children being born between 1842-1854. Seems strange, though to have children as close as they did then go for 12 years and not have any more. I'm able to share all that I have on the family so far, especially my line. Would love to connevt with other QUILLEN cousins. Anna alangley@hiwaay.net

    1. [TNLAWREN-L] James Woolsey
    2. I am searching for my elusive James Woolsey. Originally, all we knew was he was born in TN, left home about the age of 14, moved to MS, married Elizabeth Stone and had a family. His second marriage to Laura Gilmore Carr bore another son, James Webster, my grandfather. I located an IGI fiche that was supposedly from the Bible pages of an Alma Woolsey. Does anyone know of her? The recorded information shows a Samuel Woolsey, son of John IIIand Sarah Oliphant, being married to Cassandra Gilbird. They had a son, James born in 1817 in TN. They all were originally from Greene Co., TN, but it is believed they moved to Lawrence Co., TN. A later census shows a Samuel Woolsey in Roane Co., TN. This past week I was looking at a new source, which shows a James Woolsey born in TN 1818 to Thomas Woolsey, son of John IV, and Milley, also that he married Elizabeth. Wilford Wilkerson had also located a James and Elizabeth Woolsey in AR for about the same time period, however, there children's names did not correspond to the names I had for James and Elizabeth in DeSoto Co., MS, where the family was raised. Does anyone have any information, direction, clue or hint on which way to go? Thanks, Norb Woolsey
