Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Tiptonville First Baptist Church, with the Revs. Ernest Mayo and Andy Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Tiptonville City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Skipper Pierce, Lawrence Weeks, Johnny Williams, David Gooch, Hank Curvin and Chris Burrus. Friends may call at the church after 5:30 this evening. Dyersburg Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. She was born May 17, 1920, in Tiptonville, daughter of the late Benjamin Luther and Zettie Estelle (Brantley) Burrus. She was the widow of A.D. Swindle and was a retired bookkeeper and member of Tiptonville First Baptist Church. Survivors include her stepson, Dickie Swindle of Union City; three stepdaughters, Monita Alexandria, Betty Orr and Peggy Weeks, all of Hornbeak; her brother, Luther Burrus of Germantown; and 20 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her sister and two brothers.

He was born Oct. 3, 1930, in the old Hathaway Community south of Ridgely, Lake County, to the late Alpharetta Davis Bargery and Jesse Thurmond Bargery. He was a high school graduate with two years of college. He was a staff sergeant in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, returning home to farm. He was a retired Correctional Officer from Lake County Regional Correctional Facility at Tiptonville. He was a member of Hathaway and Cottonwood Grove Baptist Churches, and served as a county commissioner from his district in recent years. He married Mary Ruth Dunn, who survives. He leaves his wife, Mary Ruth Bargery, of Ridgely; four sons, Paul Steven Bargery of Byram, Miss., Kevin Lynnwood Bargery of Tiptonville, Jesse Alan Bargery of Dyersburg and Chris Bargery of Washington, D.C.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Memorials are suggested to the Diabetes Foundation and Cystic Fibrosis organization. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Vonelle Holvenstot, and a brother, Basil Lynnwood Bargery.

She had been the source of reference for the history and happenings of the last century. She was the widow of Zeal Page (Tony) Wigdor. Visitation was Sunday evening at Tiptonville First United Methodist Church. Services were at the church at 1 p.m. Monday, with the Rev. Edward Endsley, church pastor, and the Rev. Ralph Gunter, former pastor, officiating. Music was provided by organist Grace Penny McNeill of Hickman, Ky., and congregational singing of “How Great Thou Art”. The Rev. Gunter gave the eulogy, and the Rev. Endsley gave scripture readings and read a message of love and appreciation from her grandson, Bob Lewis, of Richmond, Va. Pallbearers were Billy Roberts, Jimmy King, Gordon Burrus, Jack Haynes Jr., David! Perkins and Jerry Jones. Burial was in Tiptonville City Cemetery. She was born Aug. 4, 1904, in rural Lake County (District #4) to the late Jessie Brown Morris and Thomas Morris. After they moved into town in the early 1900s, they built a large home in East End where the oil mill was, and operated a boarding house. When the oil mill needed the property, they moved it across the street, where it burned in 1930. Mrs. Wigdor’s present home was built on the lot, where it now stands. Always stylishly attired, she had operated her store next door to her home, earlier having owned and managed in that location a children’s apparel store, The Lad and Lassie Shop. Besides furnishing stylish clothes to women of the area, the store was noted for its handsome stock of hats. She first married the late Harper Peacock, the father of her children. She later married Zeal Page (Tony) Wigdor, who died in 1993. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she was a ! member of the Blanche Peacock Sunday School Class, an active member of Wesleyan Service Guild (women employed outside the home) during its existence, and served as Church Historian. She was a member of the Lake County Historical Society, and worked with the Easter Seal Society. During her years of operating her clothing store, she was honored at one time as the oldest person in the area still working. She leaves one daughter, Emily Lewis and husband, Bill, of Tiptonville; a son, Harper Anderson Peacock, and wife, Emily Clair, of Oxford, Miss.; four grandchildren, Marian Connolly of Washington, D.C., Martha Howorth of Oxford, Miss., Bob Lewis of Richmond, Va., and Steve Lewis of Martin; seven great-grandchildren, Robert and Anderson Lewis, Quinton and Craig Lewis, Moira Connolly, Katherine Howorth and Emily Howorth. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Anna Morris Nobles, Lucille Morris and Rose Lee Morris Cunningham, and four brothers, Carl Wood Morris, Charles Brown Morris, Samuel Wood Morris and Thomas! Edward Morris. Memorials may be sent to First United Methodist Church of Tiptonville.

I found some information about it on the Lake County website that says, in part, “One of the riverboat landings on the Mississippi River west of Mooring, Southwest of Tiptonville and Northwest of Ridgely, was known as Bass Landing. "Sometime prior to 1860, Mr. J. H. BASS, a wealthy farmer from North Carolina, and his wife Sarah, and children: John F., Margaret M., Mary S., Frances E. And Leona settled on the bank of the Mississippi River. This part of the river became known in later years as "Old River" when the Mississippi changed its course and cut a channel further west. ” I’m interested in finding out more about Bass Landing. J.H. and Sarah Bass are my gg-grandparents. I live in Hawaii and the internet is my only research tool.
