In case you have not been following the proposed legislation regarding Tennessee law and cemeteries, please read. Here's an update on the pending cemetery legislation. Please! let's call, write, e-mail our representatives, now. This has been placed on the Senate Regular Calendar for Monday, 7 May. There are no more hearings on the Senate side only debate. I have been told the most likely outcome will be a vote on Monday. If passed, this bill will be very restrictive to all of us who work to record, protect, and preserve cemeteries in Tennessee. On the House side the bill & amendment is currently at the House Calendar & Rules Committee, but I haven't been able to find out anything further. For copies of both the House and Senate bills, and the amendments which were passed, unanimously in both committees, last week, please go to http://www.legislature.state.tn.us/ and click on Legislation in the left index column. Enter SB1804 and then HB1353, to read both the original bills and the amendments. The Senate amendment changes the _*duty* _of owners of private property owners to allow ingress and egress to *_encourage_* owners to allow ingress and egress. It took out the wording about a visitor having *_to be specifically designated in writing_* but now adds that *_any maintenance or a grave site or cemetery, including the manner of such maintenance, must be approved in writing by the landowner_.* And many times, the current landowner is not a family member, nor may he be aware he doesn't own the cemetery. The House amendment is still very restrictive, imo. The House amendment still includes Section 4 (a) "In order for a family member, descendant or the designee of a family member of a deceased person, or a person engaging in genealogical research to exercise the right of ingress and egress to a cemetery or to graves on private property as eligible persons, *_such friend or researcher must have been specifically designated in writing as such by a member of the family or a descendant of the deceased_." *[underline is my emphasis] There's more, please take time to read these bills and amendments and speak with your representative!!
Ima The surname Newsom is not listed in the cemetery. There are: George Box born 1837 - died 26 Apr 1903 and Sarah Box born 1844 - died 28 June 1903 (She has Double stone with George; has verse inscribed, but unable to read) There is note included that states per 1900 Census, they were married ca 1858 and their daughter, Dicie A and son-in-law Thomas J Perry were living in their household. Leslie, If your Mary Privett was alive in 1870, she would have been listed in the census that year in one of the counties from which Crockett was formed in 1872. Crockett was formed from parts of Dyer, Gibson, Haywood and Madison. Do you know what county she was in at the time of the 1860 census? As you probably already know, several large families of Privetts lived in the Johnson Grove area (then Haywood District 12 - now Crockett District 14) at the time of the 1870 census. There are Privetts around here now who are descended from those families. In that same area in 1870 was a 2-yr-old Mary Privett, listed with a Jones family one house from the Privett family. One family of Privetts lived next door to a family of Moores at the time of the 1870 census. There was a Mary Privett in the mid late 1900's. Mary was one of my daddy's cousins who married a Privett. David Privett married Mary Burris 25 Apr 1919. Another of his cousins married one of these Privetts later in the 1900s. They've been around here forever, and are connected to many many families here. Presently, there are fewer - but still about a dozen in the Crockett County phone book with the Privett surname. But there are several turns where you would need to turn to the left that may be confusing. So the easiest way not to get lost is to go to Reelfoot Lake - find Lakeview Restaurant and turn on to the road beside it. The cemetery is not far from Lakeview Restaurant. Phyllis, I do not live in Lake County, but this e-mail address appears on the Lake County, TN site, regarding Crockett Cemetery. ialgee@bellsouth.net This individual should be able to help you. A book has been published which contains the names of the people buried there. However, there are only about a half dozen listed - for the purpose of advertising the book. Here is a list of the funeral homes in Lake County. Curry Funeral Home Address: 324 Church St., Tiptonville, TN 38079 Dyersburg Funeral Home- Tiptonville Branch Address: 405 Church St., Tiptonville, TN 38079 731-253-7252 Dyersburg Funeral Home - Ridgely Branch Lake Road, Ridgely, TN 38080 731-264-5845 Sue Hall Crockett County, TN -----Original Message----- From: tnlake-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:tnlake-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of gc-gateway@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, April 21, 2007 3:20 PM To: TNLAKE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [TNLAKE] Franklin Hall Griffin buried Crockett's Chapel Cemetery This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Thanks Cathy, I was told that our Esther "Essie" died in Lake County, and that she preceded her husband in death. However, since no one has shown any documentation of this - that I've seen - I propose to check our your lead! Many of the families in the West TN area migrated north during the mid 1900s to find jobs. It wouldn't surprise me if the Steve White family were indeed in Indiana some time after 1930. Thank You.
